In for a Penny

Ruby hums a happy tune as she skips down the ruined halls of Beacon Academy. Now you may be wondering why she along with the rest of the faculty are still living in a derelict building. The reason is simple: they have nowhere else.

The fall has left almost all of the faculty homeless and all forms of transportation were destroyed, leaving them stranded.

But Ruby didn't care, she was fine! Even when her fellow classmates scream to the heavens in despair, even when some of them form death cults in the shadows, even when some of the older students tried to get all touchy-feely with her.

She was fine. Because she is Ruby Rose.

Also, she had her sister Yang and handsome knight of a boyfriend Jaune to keep her safe alongside her other friends.

... oh, and Weiss.

"Ooohh, Jaune's gonna love this! I'm so excited~" Ruby squealed.

The girls and I held a meeting on who gets to be with Jaune. After constant banter and bloodshed, we decided to create a system on where one of us gets one day to spend time with Jaune.

Today, it was Ruby's turn and she wanted to go on a date with Jaune.

"..."

"Hm?" Ruby looks around. What was that sound?

"Saaaaaaaa~"

Wait, it's getting closer...

"Luuuuuuuuuu~"

Oh no...

"TAITIONSSSSSS!"

Ruby has no time to react before getting launched out of the window and falls right in the middle of the gardens with a loud thud.

"Ouchie..." Thank god for Aura or she would be a pancake.

"FRIEND RUBY!" Penny screams the name like its the greatest thing in the world.

"P-Penny!?" Ruby exclaims, not expecting the gyroid to appear.

"At your service!" Penny smiled and hugs her tightly. "I missed you so much!"

"That's nice Penny, but could you please get up? I can't breath!" Ruby yells as she runs out of air.

Penny does so and Ruby is finally able to breath. "I'm sorry!"

"It's okay." Ruby stands up. "But what are you doing here? I thought Atlas closed its borders from the other kingdoms."

Weeeeeeellllll, it was not that difficult to get out. The Atlas network is my personal playground after all!" Penny exclaims.

Oh right, robot girl. "Maybe you should go back. The general must be worried sick about you."

Now Penny looks sad. "Do... do you not want me here?" She takes out eye drops and uses them to make it look like she's crying.

Ruby shakes her head rapidly. "No, no, no! I love that you came all this way to see me!"

"Great!" Penny instantly dries her fake tears. "I love you too, Ruby!" 

Ruby blushes at the statement. "D-Don't say stuff like that so casually."

Penny grabs Ruby's arm. "Let us go on an adventure!"

"H-Hey, not so hard, Penny!"

The two girls spend the whole day together doing a variety of activities such sparring, reading, playing card games, trying out new clothes and so on.

And before they knew it, hours passed.

Ruby turns to her Scroll and her eyes fly out of their sockets as she sees the time.

"Oh gosh, I'm late!"

Penny looks perplexed. "What are you late for Friend Ruby?"

"For my date with Jaune!" Ruby leaves red petals everywhere. "What do I do!? I'm all sweaty and dirty and I haven't even put together my outfit! Ooooo, Jaune's gonna think I'm ugly!"

"Jaune...?" Penny mutters the name in her mouth. Why would Friend Ruby become hysterical over the opinion of this "Jaune"? She connected herself to Vale's CCT in order to find more about this character.

Jaune Arc, a Beacon 2nd-year student and the leader of Team JNPR. She then dug further and found his files. They were... odd to say the least. The information was inconsistent and nonexistent. She decided to extent her reach further, but found no Jaune Arc in any other academy database. As such Penny came up with only one conclusion...

Jaune Arc is not who he says he is. 

She must tell Ruby!!!

"Friend Ruby, I don't think you should meet this Jaune." Penny told her.

Ruby turns to her friend. "What are you talking about?"

"There is no information of a 'Jaune Arc' in any academy database. And the information here in Beacon is clearly false." Penny informs her.

Ruby didn't like where this was going. "What are you saying?"

"I am saying that this 'Jaune' is not who you think he is. He may be a criminal." Penny states.

Ruby just at her robotic friend silently for a few minutes.

"... I already know that, Penny." Ruby admits causing Penny's eyes to widen. "Compared to all other first years, Jaune's skill was below average. I can remember the number of times Jaune lost during combat class. I always thought it was off..."

"So why haven't you-"

"But then one night I saw him training in the gym. He would train every night, trying his hardest to be just like us. I even saw him training with Pyrrha once or twice." Ruby continues. "I don't care if Jaune faked his way into Beacon, he deserves to be here after everything he's done for us because compared to some of us, he is more worthy of being a Huntsman. He's worthy of my love."

"Ruby..." Penny was about to say something only to stop as Ruby grabs her hands.

"I'm begging you, Penny... don't ruin this for him. Please... do this for me." Ruby begged her friend.

Penny looks directly at her friend's round silver eyes. She has never seen Ruby so sad before and despite the compulsive need to follow protocol, she doesn't want see her only friend wearing such a face.

Penny tightens her grip on Ruby's hands. "Okay, Friend Ruby." 

Ruby ignores the pain. "You promise?"

Penny smiles and nods. "I promise."

Timeskip

Jaune walks back into his dorm with a big smile after his date with Ruby.

"Jaune Arc. I have been expecting you."

Jaune turns to the voice and sees a silhouette before they turn on a lamp revealing Penny.

"W-Who are you!?" Jaune demands.

"Salutations, my name is Penny. I am a friend of Ruby Rose." Penny said.

Jaune slowly relaxes. "You're a friend of Ruby's?"

"Tell me something Jaune. Why did you come to Beacon Academy? You have no combat training, no records in an training schools, and from initiation recordings you have not unlocked your Aura until after Pyrrha Nikos had unlocked it." Penny leans forward from her chair. "What drove you to risk your life like that?"

"I want to be a hero." Jaune answered.

"That's it? If you wanted to be a hero, you could have become doctor or a police officer. Why did you choose to become a Huntsman?"

Jaune looks uneasy. "I... I grew up listening to stories of my grandfather. I was determined to be just like him when I grew up, but my father refused to train me instead he wanted me to learn housework and stuff. My elder sisters weren't much help either since dad banned them from training me. So... after saving up enough money, I took my family's sword and ran away from home, then I bought fake transcripts and the rest is history."

"... one more question, Jaune. What do you think of Ruby?" Penny asked.

"Ruby? She's wonderful. She's cute and cheerful. She's also a pretty good leader." Jaune's smile becomes more solemn. "She's helped me so much since day one. She's younger than me... and yet is more mature than most of us. She... completes me."

"..." Penny looks at Jaune before standing up. "I think I have collected all of the data I need."

"Huh? What do you mean?" Jaune says as Penny opens the window.

"Ruby is everything to me. If you make her sad, I will make sure you never pick up a sword again." Penny stands on the edge of the window. "I'll be watching you, Jaune Arc." She jumps off.

"Hey, wait!" Jaune rushes to the window and looks down, but sees nothing. 'H-How did she do that? We're on the fifth floor!' "You sure known a lot of bizarre people Ruby."

Author Notes

Tada! I decided to go for something more serious this time. 

Penny is very overprotective of Ruby and she doesn't trusts Jaune because of his fake transcripts. She interrogates him and decides to let him off the hook for now. 

The last thing Jaune needs is a killer robot gunning after him.

I wanted to go for a more serious narrative, but I didn't want this chapter to be more than 2k words. Besides, I think it turned out fine.
