Chapter 35.1

It was almost New Year’s Day.

Although it wasn’t the year 2000 yet, 1999 was also an important year. The Ministry of Education of Ning City agreed to have a cultural festival, and several schools had to send their students to perform on stage. As the oldest primary school around the area, Ning City Primary School naturally had to prepare a few shows.

After nearly half a month of selection, it was finally decided. Class 1 will be performing a recitation, and Class 2 will present a dance.

Luo Shuyan happened to be learning the basics of dancing some time ago. Her class teacher was very happy when he heard about it. This was because Luo Shuyan was the cutest and most beautiful girl in class, with good academic performance, and since she was also skilled in dance, she immediately decided to let Luo Shuyan be the lead dancer.

The homeroom teacher selected seven little ones to dance, and the dance was called “Jingle Bells”. The school found a music teacher with dancing skills to choreograph and rehearse with the kids. Due to the tight schedule, the seven girls had to stay back after school every afternoon to rehearse for about forty minutes.

Other than Luo Shuyan who complained incessantly, the other six girls were very happy.

After all, it was the class teacher who had chosen them to dance, and that was a great honor.

The students’ parents were also very supportive, because many leaders in the city will be watching this cultural event, and local TV stations will be broadcasting it.

This was a good opportunity to appear on TV. Who would want their children to miss it?

Based on Luo Shuyan’s original schedule, Luo Shuyan had to go to the dance class at 6:30 every evening, and could only go home at 8:00.

Primary school class ended at 4PM, and she had two hours in between for her to catch her breath. She could eat and do her homework in a leisurely manner.

Now, another forty minutes of her day was occupied, just great. Thus, everyday, she had to scramble to finish each of her meals.

Fortunately, she would be liberated after New Year’s Day. Otherwise, she would definitely break down if this type of life were to continue.

The school grounds were empty after each rehearsal; Luo Shuyan and the other six girls went their own ways after rehearsals. Fortunately, the teacher in charge was very attentive, and only allowed them to practice until about five o’clock.

After winter arrived, the sky turned dark very early, and it would be completely dark around six o’clock. It was unsafe for a few primary school students to walk around at night.

Five in the evening was the perfect timing; it was still bright outside, and there were many people on the street.

Luo Shuyan would definitely be scared if she were to go home after six o’clock.

She rehearsed earnestly. When she thought about the fact that Shen Yan was still waiting for her, she felt at ease.

Originally, her father planned to pick her up from school every day, but he was busy with work at the end of the year. Shen Yan, despite being a cool kid, was really caring at times. He offered to wait for her to go home with her after school every day.

Incandescent lights lit the classrooms. Shen Yan took the initiative to keep the classroom keys. Since he was the last one to leave every day, he usually did his homework and read books in the classroom while waiting.

At the end of today’s rehearsal, Luo Shuyan was covered in a thin layer of sweat. She didn’t need the teacher to remind her. She found a cloth from her school bag. The other kids didn’t know how powerful a cold was, but she had already started to take the initiative to prevent colds. Colds and a stuffy nose in winter were really painful, and she really didn’t want to experience it often.

At the same time, Shen Yan, who had finished his homework, remembered that Luo Shuyan had always complained about being hungry after rehearsals these two days. So, he put away his notebook, carried his school bag, and quickly walked to the back door of the school.

There was a street filled with snack vendors behind the Ning City Primary School. The snack street’s main audience weren’t the primary school kids. After all, everyone knew that primary school students have little money in their pockets.

The snack street was always lively at night since it wasn’t far from Ning City Hospital and Ning City High School.

Shen Yan didn’t even look at the tempting fried skewers, and went straight to the roasted sweet potato vendor. He gave the seller money, and said in a steady voice, “Hey there, please pick the sweetest one, I want the sweetest one.”

The vendor noticed that Shen Yan was a cute and delicate young boy, with an adult-like expression. The vendor felt amused. He carefully picked out the sweetest baked potato and packed it for him. “Kid, I promise that this is the sweetest. The center is red, I guarantee that it’s sweet.”

Shen Yan walked back to school quickly with the hot potato in hand. He happened to run into Luo Shuyan at the entrance way of the first grade classrooms.

Her fair little face was flushed, she was obviously sweating.

Luo Shuyan trotted to Shen Yan. “Hi, I thought that you’d left.”

“If I leave beforehand, I will tell you,” Shen Yan said.

Luo Shuyan laughed. “So, let’s go home now. I’m so hungry. Aunty Shen must have cooked something delicious.”

The two talked while walking towards the school gate. Luo Shuyan was famished. She’d been moving around more recently, and it was winter, where she needed to store up fat. She didn’t feel the roaring hunger when classes ended, but she felt really hungry after rehearsals.

She had biscuits and candies at home, but she stopped eating those things because of the influence of her dance teacher.

The dance teacher said that eating those things weren’t good for the teeth and body, so she was better off eating healthily.

Her dance teacher was very beautiful and had a good figure. Although she was a fresh graduate from the dance academy, she was already a goddess-like woman!

Luo Shuyan also wanted to become a goddess in the future.

Just as Luo Shuyan was enduring the ensuing hunger, a sudden burst of sweet aroma hit her nostrils. She looked down and saw Shen Yan handing a roasted sweet potato to her.

‘What does he mean?’

Shen Yan had an awkward expression. “I bought an extra one. Do you want to eat it, or if you don’t, I’ll throw it away.”

Luo Shuyan quickly accepted it. The roasted sweet potato wasn’t very big, she should still be able to eat dinner after eating this.

She tore open the skin of the sweet potato, and saw the redness in the center. She took a bite — Wow, it is so sweet!
