Chapter 98: Final Chapter

Yu Qing walked out of the pantry and saw Tao Li reaching out to grab candy from Jiang Yue—who gave it to her. Tao Li spotted Yu Qing and immediately grinned mischievously, shaking the candy in her hand.

“Qing-jie, it’s wedding candy!”

Yu Qing realized what she meant and blushed a little, feeling a bit helpless.

“All you care about is eating.”

Tao Li giggled and winked. Yu Qing, carrying her cup of water, walked back to her desk. Jiang Yue smiled faintly and followed her into her office. He pulled out an entire bag of candies from his pocket and placed them on her desk.

Yu Qing handed him the cup in her hand—it was a disposable one.

“Was there any traffic?”

Jiang Yue’s voice was gentle.

“No, I took the southern expressway.”

Yu Qing nodded and started tidying up her desk. She picked up her shoulder bag and put the candies inside. There was also a medical file in her bag. After zipping it up, she swung it over her shoulder and walked out briskly in her tailored pants.

“Let’s go,” she said softly.

Jiang Yue threw the cup away and walked out with her, naturally taking the bag from her. Yu Qing didn’t stop him. Tao Li and a few others were huddled together, whispering and laughing obviously. Yu Qing felt her face heat up, shot Tao Li a glare, and then turned to glance at Jiang Yue.

He wore a polite smile—gentle and refined.

Yu Qing murmured,

“Ignore them.”

Jiang Yue lowered his eyes and replied,

“They just figured it out.”

Yu Qing’s face grew even warmer.

Once they walked out of Yunchi Studio and went downstairs, the warmth on her face faded. Her mind was now focused on today’s check-up. She had congenital coronary artery stenosis, something that required ongoing care and regular monitoring.

She glanced at Jiang Yue.

He opened the car door and leaned over slightly, motioning for her to get in. Yu Qing steadied herself, ducked into the passenger seat, and fastened her seatbelt.

Last night on the phone, she’d mentioned needing a check-up today. Jiang Yue had immediately offered to accompany her. He hadn’t asked what it was for, and she’d been distracted by his offer and never elaborated. Even now, as she sat in the car, he still didn’t know.

Looking out the window at the passing scenery, Yu Qing recalled her mother’s worried words on the phone.

Her mother felt this illness could be minor or serious. Yu Qing’s father had died of the same thing—and it had a genetic component. Most people would care about something like that. In the past, Yu Qing had seen it as a serious obstacle in relationships. When she was with Xu Xu, she always felt inferior. That lack of security made everything worse.

Yu Qing thought for a moment, then said,

“Three years ago, when I was still working at Yunran Studio, I was at a project site revising drafts when something happened—I had a sudden heart attack.”

Jiang Yue eased off the gas pedal when he heard that. He turned to look at her.

Yu Qing looked up and met his eyes.

“Later, Wen Yang rushed me to the hospital. They did an angiogram and found I had congenital coronary artery stenosis. It’s something I was born with. My dad passed away from the same thing.”

Jiang Yue looked at her softly and said after a moment,

“There’s no cure for something congenital—you can only manage it.”

Yu Qing nodded.

“So I’m telling you in advance, just so you’re aware.”

Jiang Yue gazed at her striking features.

Beneath that bold, captivating appearance was a soft heart. His lips curled slightly, and he said in a low voice:

“It’s okay. I don’t mind things like this. We’re all living in this world—we should always be ready to say goodbye to it.”

“If love and pursuit come with conditions and restrictions, then it’s no longer pure—and it becomes meaningless.”

Yu Qing looked into his gentle eyes.

Jiang Yue said softly,

“Don’t worry.”

Yu Qing pursed her lips, then smiled slightly.

She teased: “I was kind of hoping it’d scare you off.”

Jiang Yue raised an eyebrow.

“So that’s your plan? Well, I’m not backing off.”

Yu Qing’s smile grew deeper.

But when they arrived at the hospital, she was still nervous. No one could be completely calm about hospitals. She had booked an appointment online in advance. The doctor she was seeing today was the same one who had done her original angiogram and had been monitoring her follow-ups since.

In the past, Wen Yang had always accompanied her.

There was once when Yu Qing went alone. After her check-up, Xu Xu happened to pass by and picked her up.

Today, Jiang Yue accompanied her into the doctor’s office.

The doctor took her medical file, flipped through it, then looked up at the tall, refined man standing behind her.

It seemed the once-lonely girl now had someone to protect her.

The doctor started filling out a form and said:

“You need to pay close attention to your body. The fact that you haven’t had symptoms is good, but as you age, the chances of them showing up increases. You need to take care of yourself—don’t push too hard.”

Yu Qing nodded in response.

Jiang Yue stood behind her, watching her behave so obediently in front of the doctor—like a well-behaved child.

But through all the time he had spent pursuing her recently, he could tell: she didn’t take good care of herself. Late nights, coffee, strong tea—they were all essentials for her. Jiang Yue’s brow furrowed ever so slightly.

The doctor handed her the form and said:

“Go pay first.”

Then looked up at Jiang Yue and added,

“You stay with her.”

They decided to take the stairs instead of the elevator since it was too crowded.

Jiang Yue nodded, took the bag from Yu Qing’s hand, and walked out with her.

“Have you paid already?” he asked gently.

Yu Qing nodded with a smile.

Jiang Yue shielded her as they walked through the hallway packed with people. A group was rushing toward the elevator, and it was already crammed. Jiang Yue glanced at the elevator crowd, then turned and pushed open the emergency stairwell door, guiding Yu Qing inside.

“Do you exercise regularly?” he asked.

Yu Qing felt guilty and, clutching the form, replied:

“Sometimes I do yoga.”

“Consistently?”

Yu Qing didn’t answer.

Jiang Yue raised an eyebrow and smiled,

“So, not really.”

Yu Qing looked up at him.

“Hey…”

Jiang Yue chuckled and opened the door, gently guiding her out. The ECG room was already packed, and Yu Qing had to wait for her number to be called. Jiang Yue found a seat for her and went to get her a cup of warm water.

Yu Qing held the cup—her fingertips warmed by it.

They waited a long time.

Yu Qing handled some client messages on her tablet. Jiang Yue also took a couple of calls. When he returned, he saw her focused and working amid the crowd.

He stood watching her for a moment before walking over and asking,

“Want some candy?”

Yu Qing’s mouth was a little dry—probably from the nerves. Jiang Yue saw she was busy, so he unwrapped the candy for her and handed it over.

As their fingers brushed, warm skin met warm skin—it was comforting.

Four hours later.

The check-up was done. Yu Qing scanned the QR code nervously. When the report came up, the words “regular check-ups” were printed clearly. But the data above confused her.

Jiang Yue glanced at the report and went with her back to the doctor’s office.

The doctor looked it over and said,

“Exercise more, take walks, don’t sit all day. Cut down on coffee and strong tea, eat lighter.”

He then turned to Jiang Yue,

“Keep an eye on her.”

“Alright,” Jiang Yue replied politely.

Yu Qing blushed from the doctor’s advice—especially hearing it in front of Jiang Yue.

“Got it. Thank you, doctor,” she said and quickly tugged Jiang Yue’s sleeve, hurrying out.

Jiang Yue looked down at her with a warm smile and followed her out.

They had arrived at the hospital in the morning.

By the time they left, the sun was setting.

To thank Jiang Yue for accompanying her, Yu Qing invited him to dinner. The traffic had eased after peak hours, so it took only about an hour and a half to get from Nancheng to Dongcheng.

Yu Qing was grateful—not just for the company.

She realized that being around him made her feel very at ease. Whatever she did, he always supported her. Even when she vented a little about demanding clients, Jiang Yue would smile and say,

“It’s impossible to deal with clients calmly.”

Yu Qing sipped her soup and nodded.

“So true.”

“When I’m the client—like at tile shops—I’m picky too. I complain about prices, want discounts, and still expect top quality.”

Jiang Yue laughed softly,

“Same here.”

Yu Qing looked into his gentle eyes and felt her cheeks grow warm.

After dinner.

Jiang Yue dropped Yu Qing off at her place, then drove back to Dongcheng. He was scheduled for a business trip to Hong Kong, which would last about two weeks. He had prepared gifts for Yu Qing in advance.

Yu Qing brought the shopping bags inside, changed shoes, and sat on the sofa. She opened the bags.

There was a pair of diamond-studded earrings and a new tablet.

Yu Qing blinked and messaged him:

“Why’d you buy a tablet?”

Jiang Yue replied:

“Yours is practically falling apart.”

Yu Qing looked at the one on her table—he wasn’t wrong. The tempered glass was cracked.

Yu Qing:

“It’s too expensive. And the earrings too.”

Jiang Yue:

“Not at all. Just think of it as a Labor Day gift.”

Yu Qing:

“…So Labor Day comes with gifts too, not just time off?”

Jiang Yue:

“Exactly.”

Yu Qing laughed again. She glanced at the new tablet and ran her fingers across it.

Jiang Yue’s business trip ended up lasting longer than expected—three more days were added, making it nearly twenty days in total. During that time, Yu Qing was busy participating in a competition. Nancheng was entering early summer, and beautiful flowers were blooming everywhere.

With early summer also came frequent rain.

Yu Qing and Wen Yang were drinking afternoon tea by the window, watching the rain and the double-decker buses outside. Wen Yang was reminded of the time, years ago, when she discovered Cheng Yanyu’s affair and ended up soaked on a bus ride home.

She also recalled standing at a bus stop in Hong Kong, neon lights behind her blending into the rain as Fu Xingzhou stood before her. Rainy days could be cruel or romantic—depending entirely on the people involved.

After their tea, the two best friends returned to work.

Just as Yu Qing sat down, a client called, asking her to accompany him to the site to look over the renovation. Yu Qing agreed, packed up her laptop, and told Wen Yang. Wen Yang smiled,

“Go on, just don’t forget your umbrella.”

Yu Qing pinched her cheek and grinned.

“Got it.”

She grabbed an umbrella, slung her bag over her shoulder, and drove to the client’s apartment complex.

Coming up from the underground garage, she noticed that rainy days really highlighted the advantages of a large apartment. But since the renovation wasn’t fully done, the expansive balcony was still exposed, and the rain was drifting in. The client had brought his child with him, saying this was the only day he had time—who would’ve thought it would rain?

Yu Qing smiled and asked,

“Anything you want to change? The balcony hasn’t been enclosed yet, so it’s still possible.”

The client opened the door, peeked out, and got splashed with rain. He quickly closed it and said,

“Forget it. If it’s not enclosed, it’s just too uncomfortable in weather like this. Plus, it doesn’t even look that good.”

Yu Qing smiled,

“Enclosed or not each has its own aesthetic. I can make adjustments.”

“No need.”

The client walked inside. Yu Qing was about to follow when she saw the client’s child tugging at the balcony door. Her face went pale as she rushed over to stop him, but the child had already opened the door. Wind and rain howled inside, drenching both the child and Yu Qing—from her face down to her shoulders. She slammed the door shut.

The client rushed over when he heard the commotion, grabbed the child, and started scolding him.

Yu Qing quickly handed over some tissues to help and began drying herself off too.

The client wiped the rain off the child’s face and apologized to Yu Qing.

Yu Qing smiled helplessly,

“It’s fine. Now that I think about it, maybe you should enclose the balcony.”

The client immediately agreed,

“That’s exactly what I was thinking. I’ve got several kids, none of them are that careful. With a unit this high up, if I don’t enclose it, I can’t even imagine what might happen.”

Yu Qing nodded,

“Better to be cautious.”

“Exactly.”

They walked through the apartment again. By the time they were done, it was close to 5 PM. The rain hadn’t let up, and the weather was still gloomy. The dampness on Yu Qing’s shoulder hadn’t dried—it was sticky and uncomfortable—so she decided to go home to shower and order some takeout.

Later, she began to feel feverish and dizzy. She forgot to take medicine and curled up on the couch, too lazy to move. Eventually, she fell asleep with her hand still resting on the computer.

The rain outside had eased, but night had fallen.

Her phone, lying on the table, lit up with a message, blinked twice, and went dark. Five minutes later, a call came in. Still holding a big, soft pillow, Yu Qing groggily reached out to answer.

It was Jiang Yue.

“Already asleep?”

His voice held a hint of confusion at how early it was.

Yu Qing’s voice was hoarse,

“Mm… I dozed off after my shower.”

“You’re sleeping out there?” Jiang Yue caught the odd tone in her voice.

Yu Qing lifted her heavy eyelids, looked around,

“Yeah, in the living room.”

“Why not sleep in your room?”

Yu Qing blinked, too tired to care,

“I was just… sleepy.”

“You caught a cold?” Jiang Yue asked directly.

Yu Qing touched her forehead,

“Seems like it.”

“Are you home alone?”

“Yeah.”

“Fever?”

“A bit, I think.”

Jiang Yue silently thought, I knew it.

“Can you get up?” he asked.

“Get up for what?” Yu Qing mumbled, ready to fall back asleep.

Jiang Yue raised an eyebrow.

“What’s your home password? I’m coming over.”

Yu Qing gave him the code.

After hanging up, she clutched her phone and stared at it dazedly.

He’s in Nancheng? He came back?

Her fevered mind was fuzzy again, and she leaned back into the chair.

Half an hour later.

There was a knock on the door—four or five times. No response from inside. Jiang Yue frowned, thought for a second, entered the code, and opened the door.

He stepped in and saw takeout boxes left on the island. The home cleaning robot had run out of battery and was stuck halfway under the TV stand. Two plush toys had fallen onto the floor. The window was still open, rain falling onto the plants on the balcony, bending them sideways.

The place wasn’t dirty, but it was a bit messy.

Jiang Yue scanned the room and finally looked at the sofa. Yu Qing was curled up there, fast asleep, strands of hair hanging over her cheek.

Yu Qing’s face was slightly flushed. Jiang Yue looked concerned. He closed the door, walked to the kitchen island, and placed the bag he was carrying on it. He took out a thermometer gun, fever-reducing medicine, and a takeout container of porridge.

The first thing he did was boil some water—the thermos was empty. She had finished it earlier and forgot to refill it.

Jiang Yue started boiling water, then brought the medicine over to the sofa. He switched on the thermometer gun and looked at her for a few seconds. Her hair was very soft—he briefly touched it, then quickly pulled back. He scanned her forehead with the thermometer.

It read 38.2°C (100.8°F). She definitely had a high fever.

Jiang Yue called out gently:

“Yu Qing.”

Yu Qing blinked open her eyes in a daze.

Jiang Yue, dressed in a shirt, sat across from her. Yu Qing stared blankly for a second,

“You came to Nancheng?”

“Did you think that was a dream? You called me, remember?”

Jiang Yue smiled and added,

“Or just treat it like a dream.”

Yu Qing looked at him and smiled faintly, though her lips were dry. Jiang Yue handed her the water and medicine, helping her sit up. She had already showered—her body carried the scent of soap, and her hair gave off a faint lavender fragrance. Jiang Yue looked down, and his heart raced.

Yu Qing obediently took the medicine and drank some water. As she handed back the cup, she said,

“Went to a site visit with a client. Got caught in the rain.”

“Didn’t bring an umbrella?”

“It happened on that huge balcony of his.”

Jiang Yue nodded.

So that’s what happened.

He took a blanket and gently covered her.

Yu Qing leaned back, feeling a little lazy and still drowsy. She touched her forehead—because she was already hot all over, she couldn’t really feel the fever.

She didn’t move, just snuggled deeper into the blanket.

Jiang Yue washed the cup and, on the way back, helped tidy up the kitchen island. Then he went to the living room and picked up the poor robot vacuum, carried it to the charging station, and set it to charge. He picked up the plush toys that had fallen on the floor—both were pink piglets, ones Yu Qing liked. They were very cute. He smiled and placed them back on the sofa, neatly beside her.

He also went to the balcony, brought in the plants that were still being rained on—if left like that, they really might’ve withered.

Finally, Jiang Yue slid the balcony door shut. The sound of the rain outside instantly softened, and the house became much quieter.

Jiang Yue returned to the sofa.

Yu Qing had actually seen everything he did. She was dazed, but watching. Jiang Yue reached out, placed his broad palm gently on her forehead for a few seconds, then pulled away. Yu Qing’s eyes met his.

He looked at her gently and said in a low voice:

“Let me take care of you, okay?”

Yu Qing looked into his eyes and asked,

“In what capacity would you take care of me?”

“What capacity do you want to give me?”

Yu Qing’s cheeks flushed. Her back was warm too. She tightened the blanket around herself and quietly said:

“Boyfriend, I guess.”

Jiang Yue let out a soft laugh.

“That’s exactly the title I’ve been waiting for.”

Yu Qing looked at him. Their eyes met. The corners of her lips pressed together slightly—A smile was hidden in the curve of her mouth.
