112: Aftermath and Consequences 112: Aftermath and Consequences The pale light of dawn was just beginning to streak the sky as Mishka sat on a fallen log at the edge of the forest, her eyes fixed on the smoldering ruins of Bruce’s once-magnificent mansion.
Beside her, Graham lay on a makeshift bed of leaves, his breathing labored but steady.
“How long does it usually take?” Mishka asked, her voice hoarse from the night’s events.
Graham winced as he shifted position.
“Werewolf healing?
It varies.
Minor injuries, minutes.
This?” He gestured to his clearly broken leg.
“Could be hours.”
Mishka nodded, trying to quell the impatience and fear churning in her stomach.
There was still no sign of Bruce, and the authorities would surely arrive soon.
They needed to move, to search for Bruce, but not before Graham could walk.
Suddenly, a twig snapped nearby.
Mishka jumped to her feet, the silver letter opener she’d managed to hold onto throughout their escape now gripped tightly in her hand.
“Who’s there?” she called out, trying to keep her voice steady.
To her surprise, Jean and Lucinda emerged from the trees.
They were back in human form, their clothes torn and dirty, their faces a mix of exhaustion and…
was that remorse?
“We’re not here to fight,” Jean said, her hands raised in a gesture of peace.
Lucinda nodded, her usual haughty demeanor replaced by something closer to shame.
“We…
we lost control.
Our combined rage, it…
it went too far.”
Mishka stood her ground, the letter opener still raised.
“Where’s Bruce?
What have you done with him?”
“We don’t know,” Jean admitted.
“The last we saw, he was in the east wing when it collapsed.
We’ve been searching the ruins, but…”
Her words trailed off, the implication hanging heavy in the air.
Graham struggled to sit up.
“Why should we believe you?
Why this sudden change of heart?”
Lucinda’s shoulders slumped.
“The pack leader arrived just after the collapse.
He…
he was not pleased.”
“That’s an understatement,” a new voice boomed from behind them.
Mishka whirled around to see a tall, imposing man with salt-and-pepper hair striding towards them.
Even in human form, he exuded an aura of power that made Mishka instinctively take a step back.
“Pack Leader,” Jean and Lucinda murmured in unison, their heads bowed.
The man’s steely gaze swept over the group, lingering on Mishka.
“So, you’re the one who’s caused all this fuss,” he said, his tone unreadable.
Before Mishka could respond, the Pack Leader turned to Jean and Lucinda.
“Your actions tonight have not only endangered our secrecy but have also destroyed a valuable asset to our community.
Bruce’s contributions to both the fashion world and our pack cannot be overstated.”
Jean and Lucinda seemed to shrink under his glare.
“As punishment,” the Pack Leader continued, “you will personally finance and oversee the rebuilding of Bruce’s mansion.
Every penny will come from your own wealth.
Moreover, you are hereby cut off from all pack support and business connections until the project is complete and Bruce deems your debt repaid.”
Lucinda gasped.
“But that could take years!
Our fashion lines, our-”
“Should have thought of that before you let your petty jealousies endanger us all,” the Pack Leader snapped.
As Jean and Lucinda absorbed the weight of their punishment, Mishka’s attention was drawn back to Graham.
To her amazement, she could actually see his leg straightening, the bruises fading before her eyes.
“It’s done,” Graham said, cautiously testing his weight on the newly healed limb.
The Pack Leader nodded approvingly.
“Good.
Now, we need to find Bruce before the human authorities arrive.
Graham, take the north side.
Jean and Lucinda, west and east.
I’ll take the south.
The girl stays here.”
“No,” Mishka said firmly, surprising herself with her boldness.
“I’m coming too.
I…
I need to find him.”
The Pack Leader studied her for a long moment, then nodded.
“Very well.
You’re with me.
Let’s move.”
As they spread out to search the ruins, Mishka’s heart raced with hope and fear.
Would they find Bruce?
And if they did, in what condition?
Mishka accompanied the group and returned to search through the debris of the damaged mansion.
At a certain point, while Mishka was picking her way through the debris, calling Bruce’s name, she suddenly, she heard a faint sound – a groan, barely audible, coming from beneath a pile of rubble.
She rushed over to it.
Mishka’s heart leapt into her throat as she heard the faint groan.
“Over here!” she shouted, scrambling over broken beams and shattered marble.
The Pack Leader was at her side in an instant, his superhuman strength making quick work of the larger pieces of debris.
As they dug, Mishka caught a glimpse of a hand, then an arm.
“Bruce!” she cried, redoubling her efforts.
Finally, they uncovered him.
Bruce lay amid the wreckage, his clothes torn and body battered.
His eyes were closed, but Mishka could see the shallow rise and fall of his chest.
“He’s alive,” the Pack Leader confirmed, his keen senses picking up Bruce’s faint heartbeat.
“But barely.
We need to get him out of here now.”
As they carefully extracted Bruce from the rubble, Mishka heard the distant wail of sirens.
“The authorities are coming,” she said, panic rising in her voice.
The Pack Leader nodded grimly.
“We can’t let them find him like this.
His injuries…
they’re not normal.
If he starts healing in front of them…”
Mishka understood.
Bruce’s secret – all their secrets – would be exposed.
Suddenly, Bruce’s eyes fluttered open.
“Mishka,” he whispered, his voice barely audible.
“I’m here,” she said, grasping his hand.
“You’re going to be okay.”
Bruce’s eyes widened with urgency.
“The safe…
in the study.
You need to…”
His words were cut off by a fit of coughing.
When it subsided, he slipped back into unconsciousness.
“We need to move,” the Pack Leader insisted, easily lifting Bruce’s limp form.
As they hurried away from the ruins, Mishka’s mind raced.
What was in the safe?
What was so important that it was Bruce’s first thought upon waking?
They reached the edge of the property just as the first police cars pulled up to the gate.
The Pack Leader whistled, a sharp, piercing sound that seemed to echo through the trees.
Moments later, a sleek black SUV pulled up beside them.
“Get in,” the Pack Leader ordered, carefully placing Bruce in the backseat.
As Mishka climbed in beside Bruce, cradling his head in her lap, she saw Graham, Jean, and Lucinda emerging from the woods.
They exchanged quick words with the Pack Leader before disappearing into the pre-dawn shadows.
The SUV peeled away just as the police began to approach the mansion ruins.
Mishka looked down at Bruce’s pale face, her heart aching with worry and confusion.
“Where are we going?” she asked the driver, a stone-faced man she didn’t recognize.
“Somewhere safe,” he replied cryptically.
As they sped through the empty streets, Bruce stirred again.
His eyes opened, unfocused and glassy with pain.
“Mishka,” he mumbled.
“The safe…
the prophecy…”
“What prophecy?” Mishka asked, leaning closer.
“Bruce, what are you talking about?”
But Bruce had slipped away again, leaving Mishka with more questions than answers.
The SUV suddenly swerved, tires screeching.
Mishka looked up to see a massive, wolf-like creature standing in the middle of the road, its eyes glowing an unnatural red.
“Hold on!” the driver yelled, swerving again to avoid the beast.
As they careened down the road, more of the creatures appeared, running alongside the vehicle with impossible speed.
Mishka clutched Bruce tightly, her mind reeling.
These weren’t ordinary wolves.
They weren’t even ordinary werewolves.
Something was very, very wrong.
The SUV was soon surrounded by the mysterious creatures.
The driver frantically tried to outmaneuver them.
Mishka, trapped in the backseat with an unconscious Bruce, wondered, “What are these creatures?
What prophecy was Bruce talking about?
And how are we going to escape this new, terrifying threat?”
