71: Gillian comes up with a risky plan 71: Gillian comes up with a risky plan “My grandma really wants to stand out at this ball.
She’s even coloured her hair and she wants a really out there outfit.
I don’t care about impressing too many people at that ball.
I just want to be an investigator and see what they really get up to as witches,” Mishka commented as she stood in front of her set of wardrobes, looking through her ball gowns.
“You can just as well dazzle while you’re at it.
You never know, maybe there’s a big talent scout there,” Gillian remarked as she fingered a bottle-green satin dress.
“This is such an amazing colour, with these emerald-like crystals which are embroidered onto it,” she added with a dreamy look in her eyes.
“That would have been great if my hair was still dark,” Mishka responded with her mouth corners turned down nonchalantly.
She shrugged and searched further.
“Oh, yes, you’re blonde now,” Gillian responded, scratching her head as she tried to focus on finding the right gown for Mishka.
“I simply want to look stunning for my music session on Saturday morning, just in case we shoot a good video,” Mishka remarked when she stepped back to her chair to look at the pants suit which she had draped over it.
“It’s a stunning colour scheme, that blue with the orange trimming,” Gillian commented as she also glanced at the outfit.
“Then I can wear a blue or grey gown for the evening,” Mishka commented with a frown as she tried to think clearly.
She returned to look through the evening gowns.
“So, you’re not joining your grandma with her shopping trip,” Gillian remarked.
“No, Clara has the patience for that because she is her assistant, after all,” Mishka responded.
At this Gillian glanced over her shoulder at the half-closed door.
“Do you realize that we can learn a lot about your grandma, just by talking to Clara?
She’s been around her for decades.
She must know all her secrets,” Gillian whispered with her eyebrows raised as the realization hit her.
“Yes, but she will never betray Grandma’s confidence,” Mishka whispered back.
“There’s always a way to do something when one is desperate.
For instance, we don’t know where that stalker comes from, but your grandma might be able to find out something about her.
Clara herself might know how your grandma can go about it,” Gillian remarked, her eyes filled with hope.
“Wait a minute.
Are you thinking that Clara can learn how to read someone’s fortune, simply because she’s been in Grandma’s company for years?” Mishka asked, staring at Gillian with a deep frown of concern between her brows.
“She might be more powerful than you think.
She and your gran always remain behind closed doors, even just for combing hair.
Old people tend to begin to trust their servants with their very lives, you know?” Gillian continued, as she studied Mishka’s face.
She then held her head to the side and narrowed her eyes as she considered her own statement.
“That sounds like something that I would rather not know about.
The less you know, the less danger you’re exposed to,” Mishka responded as she began to look through the gowns again.
“But, you want to attend a potentially risky evening with witches, just so that you can suss them out?” Gillian commented, shaking her head.
“I won’t be bringing any witches home with me, so that danger will stay right there at the party venue.
I don’t want to confide in dangerous people at home.
There are just so many ways that Clara can begin to sabotage me.
She’s Grandma’s ally,” Mishka responded.
“Well, I can find a way to win her over patiently.
I don’t live here, so I’m not that vulnerable,” Gillian responded with a dreamy look in her eyes.
“I will begin to show an interest in hairdressing, you see.
As she gets comfortable with talking about hair with me, she will eventually begin to confide in me,” Gillian continued, rocking from side to side as she considered her idea.
“An accountant who’s interested in hairdressing?” Mishka asked, her eyes big in disbelief and concern.
“A person can have any kind of hobby.
I can really start studying hairstyles with her, you know.
As time goes on, she’ll be bound to confide about certain things,” Gillian continued as she stared at the rug.
“That’s gonna take a while.
Don’t you want to continue with the video spying?” Mishka asked looking at Gillian in concern.
“Will she now get ideas which will cause her to get confused about what we’re doing?
I just want to spy on Grandma and see who she really is.
I don’t want to involve her assistant,” Mishka thought to herself.
“We can, but what we see is only on the outside.
We need to know the inside story.
Where does everything come from?
What’s the purpose behind it?
Clara could tell me that,” Gillian responded in a whisper.
“And you also want to find out if she learned some trade secrets from Grandma; enough to turn her into a witch herself?” Mishka asked as she stared at Gillian with a deeper concern in her eyes.
“Such skills can rub off onto someone, unless she’s never been allowed to watch,” Gillian responded as she folded her arms across her chest confidently.
“It sounds too scary.
I’m going to practice my song on the back porch now,” Mishka announced as she closed her wardrobe doors.
“Then I can look for Clara and begin talking to her about hairstyling right away,” Gillian announced with her eyes lighting up with delight.
“What, now?” Mishka asked with a frown of concern on her brow.
“Shouldn’t you go home and plan your strategy first?
Maybe you’ll change your mind when you really think about the implications?” Mishka asked as she stared at Gillian anxiously.
“No, I’m too excited for that.
I’ve got a good feeling about this hunch of mine.
Clara can be a great help to us.
I’m going to look for her now,” Gillian announced as she began to walk towards the bedroom door.
“Wait, think about what I said!” Mishka called after her, but Gillian was already out the door.
“She won’t stop if she has that excited look in her eyes.
I better pray that she doesn’t land us both into serious trouble.
I want to be able to sleep peacefully at night,” Mishka murmured to herself.
“Let me go and practice.
I can find out which parts of my song disturb my grandmother.
She’s bound to say something again today,” Mishka told herself as she closed her bedroom door behind her.
She was just about to head down the stairs when she heard Myrtle’s voice behind her.
Mishka turned around immediately to see Myrtle, Gillian and Clara chatting in front of Myrtle’s bedroom door.
“How does Gillian manage to locate Clara just at the right time?” Mishka asked herself.
“Let me walk on quickly before they see me.
I’m not gonna join them for anything.
Anyway, I have to do my research on that stalker as well.
Let me call Josh,” she decided as she rushed down the staircase.
“Imagine, my grandmother being able to help me find out about the stalker?
I don’t think so,” Mishka told herself, shaking her head in doubt.
