72: Gillian gets into Clara’s mind 72: Gillian gets into Clara’s mind Gillian sat on the couch in Clara’s bedroom.
The bedroom looked quite ordinary, but too smart for a maid.
“But then, after so many years of loyalty, she deserves this.
In fact, with being loyal to someone like Myrtle she needs an entire cottage to herself,” Gillian told herself as she listened to Clara’s explanations about how important the proper shade of hair colour was.
“It should match your skin tone, but it should also enhance your skin tone,” Clara was saying.
“It changes the way that the world looks at you, so it changes your luck,” she added with her brows raised to emphasize her statement.
“Wow, so much knowledge but she chooses to work for one person?” Gillian asked herself.
“No, there must be something else keeping her here and it can’t be the cute bedroom.
A pretty bedroom in a stressful environment is not worth the trouble,” she continued to think as she watched Clara speak.
“So, I’m sure you’ve worked on some interesting people’s hair in the past,” Gillian remarked.
“Do you mean before I came here?” Clara asked with a steady look in her eyes as she tried to remember.
“Yes, because I’m sure that was why you were offered the job to work here?” Gillian asked.
“Well, I have worked on some politician ladies’ hair and some local business ladies’ hair as well, but not any real celebrities, if that’s what you mean.
Anyway, I consider all my clients as celebrities,” Clara replied.
“That’s amazing, because some hairdressers are very critical of their clients, especially if the clients are egotistical,” Gillian remarked in a sincere tone of voice.
She was serious about this statement.
“Yes, they’re very difficult to please when they’re full of themselves,” Clara mumbled.
“But, one needs to have a trick about this,” she added with one raised eyebrow.
“Oh, what’s that?” Gillian asked with a curious look in her eyes.
“You just play along and make them think that you believe that they’re that fantastic and amazing as well.
Then you go off to have a cup of tea and sigh in relief when they’re gone,” Clara stated with an amused grin on her face.
“So, you have some fun during the situation instead of being miserable or overwhelmed,” Gillian remarked with a slow nod.
“That’s very smart.
I will try to remember that in my line of work,” she added with a smile.
Clara was rather impressive and surprisingly entertaining to talk to.
“So, living here is also not a challenge for you because there are good times and bad times everywhere,” Gillian added with a straight face.
She did not want to give away any signs of snooping.
“Yes, well, I’ve lived in a few big houses before and there’s often a lot of drama and sometimes intrigue there.
That’s always the case when people have a lot of money,” Clara remarked with her eyebrows raised for emphasis.
“So, it’s not unusual to uncover secret plots and schemes, dark family secrets, and so on?” Gillian asked with her heart beating fast from anticipation.
“Very definitely so.
It can’t be otherwise.
With big inheritances around you will often find someone who’s greedy and wants everything for themselves.
So, servants are amused by this, but we keep our heads down and our mouths closed.
We think about it when we lay in out beds at night,” Clara commented in a low tone of voice.
“That’s so interesting.
But don’t you sometimes feel as if you’re going to burst from keeping a lot if secrets locked up inside of you?” Gillian asked, shifting to the edge of the small couch that she was sitting on.
“No, it isn’t our business.
The problems are not ours, so we just count our blessings and feel happy that we don’t have those kind of headaches in our lives.
Sometimes it’s better not to have too much, because then you have little to fight and bicker about,” Clara remarked while she combed out a wig.
“So, you still practice on wigs, even though you’re probably never again gonna work with clients who need them?” Gillian asked because of Clara’s long history of working for Myrtle.
She wanted to change the subject, so that Clara would not think that she was obsessed about rich people.
“Well, one never knows, hey?
One’s destiny can change in a heartbeat.
I might one day end up working with folks who don’t age so soon,” Clara responded.
“Just how old does she think she’s going to get in life then?” Gillian asked herself in amazement because it seemed as if Clara was serious.
“You mean that you might return to previous clients?” Gillian asked with a frown.
“Yes, people who remain young for longer,” Clara responded without looking at Gillian.
“So then, you’re not thinking about retiring soon.
That’s very inspiring,” Gillian added with an amused smile on her face.
“But, what do you mean by saying that these people don’t age quickly?” she asked, frowning in confusion.
“Did you hear about the time when there were so many wolves being hunted down in the forest because some people thought that they were werewolves?” Clara asked.
“No, not really.
If I did hear, then I must have forgotten about it.
But, why would people think about werewolves amongst them?” Gillian asked with a frown as she shook her head in confusion.
“Well, some people are considered to have werewolves as relatives in secret.
They don’t age quickly,” Clara responded with her eyebrows raised at Gillian.
She then shrugged and threw the wig into a corner basket, on top of other wigs.
“Gosh, it’s the first time that I hear about something like that,” Gillian responded with a deep frown between her brows.
“I don’t think it’s so rare if you are one of those people.
It’s a secret life, but quite natural for those kind of families,” Clara remarked as she stared through the window.
“It’s getting dark out there.
Is Mishka gonna sing until late?
What about dinner?
She can’t be late again,” Clara added with a sudden concerned look in her eyes as she changed the subject.
“It seems as if she’s actually concerned about Mishka,” Gillian told herself in surprise.
“I’m sure that she won’t be out there for too long.
I have to go now because I’m not having supper here again this week,” she remarked.
“Oh, you shouldn’t look at it that way.
They actually love it when you join them for supper because you cause some unusual entertainment for them.
They actually love the diversion because it can get really boring around that table, believe you me,” Clara added as she walked back to the wigs and combs.
“I didn’t know that.
I always thought I would be in the way if I came too often,” Gillian responded as she rose from the couch.
“Anyway, I must go because I have a lot to think about now,” she added, straightening out her skirt.
She had sat for quite a long time.
“Oh, I can tell a whole lot of tales about the different kinds of families out there,” Clara responded with a broad grin on her face.
“But, are you serious?
Are there families out there for whom changing from human to wolf is a normal procedure?
Then, how did they escape the werewolf killings if they’re still around?
It sounds hard to believe,” Gillian responded.
“I would like to meet them if they do exist, though,” she added with an amused giggle.
“Oh, you would be surprised because they’re closer than you think and yes, they do exist,” Clara added as she walked Gillian to the door.
“Meaning that they’re right around me?
Like at work and my friends, etcetera?” Gillian asked with a concerned frown as she stared into Clara’s eyes.
She did not seem to be joking about her statements.
Was she sane?
