If they are indeed wolves then we will have to be careful,” Myrtle commented thoughtfully as she had coffee with Rose in the lounge of Rose’s home after their session with the crystal ball.
“But we have the advantage of being able to see their plans ahead of time,” Rose responded.
“That’s an advantage, yes, but they are physically very strong.
I know that I can’t fight a werewolf myself,” Myrtle remarked with a pensive furrow between her brows.
“We might not have to fight them ourselves.
We need a team on our side to go and question them if they are stalking us,” Rose responded.
At that moment, Steven, the gardener walked past the front door.
“Oh, by the way, my gardener has had some relations with wolves in the past.
I never asked him if they moved away or just disappeared,” Rose added.
“They clearly haven’t disappeared if you say that the blonde girl that we saw earlier is a wolf,” Myrtle responded, nodding at Rose with her brows raised curiously.
“Oh, she and her friend give off all the vibes of being wolves for sure,” Rose responded, nodding her head at Myrtle in confirmation.
“Then, can he help us track down those wolves if we explain how they look?” Myrtle asked, just above a whisper.
“He’s very secretive but we can try to ask him.
I think he has to be very careful about any associations with wolves if he still does see them,” Rose responded with a pensive look in her eyes.
“I think I should invite him over to tea and then tell him that I need special advice about wolves.
Do you think that he will accept?” Myrtle asked.
“You will have to tell him the reason for the visit upfront, otherwise he will be very suspicious if you simply invite him for tea as a gardener,” Rose responded after a brief pause.
“Uhmmm, it might still make him suspicious,” Myrtle responded as she looked down at the carpet, frowning in thought.
“Then I will have to find a way to ask him myself,” Rose remarked rising from the couch.
She slowly walked in the direction of the door and peeped outside.
“Wait, I think I can get more out of him by treating him well.
I think that I should invite him to tea, but then not single him out.
We can make it a staff tea party and then I can speak to him on the side.
I could pretend to be merely curious at first?” Myrtle suggested with her eyes big from excitement.
“It sounds like a good idea,” Rose agreed, grinning broadly in excitement.
Back at her own home, Myrtle rushed to her bedroom.
Clara had gone on ahead of her, so she would be busy organizing her clothes for the ball.
“Clara mustn’t know about this entire episode with the wolves, but I have to find out who that girl is before she does anything to harm someone who is close to me,” Myrtle told herself as she walked up the stairs.
“That colour looks good.
You should keep it that way,” Clara remarked as soon as Myrtle entered her bedroom.
“Oh, I’ve even forgotten that I’ve changed my hair colour,” Myrtle responded.
She did not look directly at Clara as she spoke.
“I have to find a reason to make Clara leave my room right now,” she told herself silently.
“I should have let Mishka’s friend come along with us since she’s so interested in hair,” Clara remarked while she handled the dress which Myrtle had bought for the ball.
“Oh, which friend of Mishka’s likes hairdressing?” Myrtle asked, frowning in surprise.
“Gillian, would you believe it?
But now she’s not just interested in hair.
She’s also interested in werewolves from now on, I’m sure,” Clara remarked with a hand on her hip.
Myrtle gaped at Clara in shock.
“Since when is Gillian interested in things like that?
I didn’t know that she was interested in fantasy?”
“Oh, we had a lovely conversation during our hairdressing lesson,” Clara responded as she hung Myrtle’s dress back into the wardrobe.
“I had no idea that Gillian was interested in such unusual stuff.
I know she’s recently developed an interest in filmmaking.
Well, maybe she wants to make a film about werewolves,” Myrtle remarked as she pondered the situation.
“I don’t think she knows whether werewolves exist or not,” she added before putting her handbag down on the couch.
“I’m sure that she will do research about hairdressing as well as werewolves, after the lessons that I’ve given her,” Clara remarked with an amused smile as she walked towards the door.
“From you?
What can she learn about werewolves from you?” Myrtle asked with a frown.
She did not think that Clara knew much about the supernatural or the paranormal world.
She never discussed those kind of topics with Clara.
Werewolves should be the last thing on Clara’s mind.
“I have had some experiences with wolves before I came here.
I knew some of them closely,” Clara responded in a calm tone of voice as she twirled her hair around her finger.
“Have I been so wrapped up in myself all these years that I never realized that Clara could have an unusual past?” Myrtle asked herself, taking a deep breath to recover from her shock.
“Are you serious, Clara?” she asked, observing Clara steadily.
“Yes, I am,” Clara responded.
“It will be fun to teach Gillian about wolves amongst us because she’s so interested in learning about the past,” Clara remarked as she looked through the windows and sighed.
Myrtle slowly lowered herself onto the couch and sighed again as she stared at Clara.
“How could I be so foolish not to notice that my staff members are not as ignorant as they look?” Myrtle asked herself in amazement.
“So, you knew them in the past?” she asked in a steady tone of voice.
“This could be the route to the answers that I’m looking for,” Myrtle told herself inwardly.
“Yes, way back,” Clara responded, removing her gaze from the window to the carpet as she tried to think.
“I remember it as if it was yesterday, but those people are gone now,” Clara responded, still looking down at the carpet.
“You mean the wolves?” Myrtle asked.
“Yes, the werewolves,” Clara responded.
“So, you don’t know any modern ones?” Myrtle asked, moving to the edge of the couch eagerly.
“I’m not in touch with wolves lately, so I don’t know who returned and who stayed away,” Clara responded.
“So, you can’t contact someone from way back then?
Wait, wasn’t there a common place that they visited?
A meeting place, for instance?” Myrtle asked without removing her gaze from Clara’s pensive face.
“Uhmmm, now that you mention it.
There were various places where they met.
Just like fortune-tellers do, I suppose.
I don’t think a fortune-teller or a witch can function entirely on their own, do you?
I mean that’s only in the stories, but people all need company,” Clara continued with an amused grin on her lips.
“What do you know about witches who need company?” Myrtle asked, staring at Clara’s face carefully.
“Is she hinting at something or is this mere coincidence?” Myrtle asked herself with her heart beating fast in her chest.
