But, you don’t get along with your granddaughter.
You’re always arguing.
Why would she help you?” Ivan remarked, shaking his head at Myrtle.
“We can work something out.
Rose told me about Mishka’s gift when I was complaining about her loud singing on the terrace.
Rose told me that, as a siren, Mishka might have certain powers that she was not yet aware of.
So, in a certain sense, she might be taking after me.
Who knows?” Myrtle commented.
“So, you’re going to try and get onto her good side, so that she can begin to confide in you.
That’s a good strategy.
It will look like family bonding,” Ivan commented as he paced up and down the nursery, occasionally sniffing at some freshly cut flowers in a bucket.
Myrtle was planning to decorate the house with them in the morning.
“But, what if she refuses to cooperate?” Ivan asked with a thoughtful look in his eyes as he stopped his pacing abruptly.
“She will suspect my motives, as usual, but I will persist and I will make valid points while trying to convince her about her powers.
I will show her the advantages,” Myrtle replied, narrowing her eyes as she tried to focus on the situation.
“She might be shocked at first, but grateful later on, I’m sure.
Now, what if she tries to challenge your powers and weigh them against hers?” Ivan asked.
“Oh, no.
She doesn’t know about my powers, yet.
I’ve been very diligent over the years.
Nobody here knows about my past as a fortune-teller, nor my present powers of perception,” Myrtle responded with her mouth set firmly in a straight line.
“Oh, but you should be careful.
With old age comes negligence.
We’re not as perceptive as we think we still are when we’re old,” Ivan cautioned with his eyes round and large for emphasis.
“Do you think I’m losing my grip on reality?
I’m not even that old, you know?” Myrtle responded, raising her chin indignantly.
“I think you should become extra careful and test people to make sure that they still haven’t heard anything about the past.
Are you sure that they don’t know about your present activities as a healer and spiritual guide?” Ivan asked.
“Are you serious now?” Myrtle asked, looking at Ivan with a curious frown on her brow.
“I’m dead serious.
It is possible to become so comfortable with the way things have always been, that you forget to look around you,” Ivan advised as he tapped his stick thoughtfully.
“Well, they do know that I practice natural healing here and another thing is that I did notice that girl watching me.
So, my perception is still good,” Myrtle remarked with a deep frown of concentration on her brow.
“I wonder where she can be from.
If she’s a wolf then she and her friends will have a pack on their side as well, so it won’t be easy to intimidate them,” Ivan remarked shaking his head and letting out a deep sigh.
“So, why don’t you look and see if you can identify them?” Myrtle asked, her eyes large with curiosity.
“Let me see, do you have a small basin with water?
Smoke will be detected too easily,” Ivan asked.
“I can get you a bowl of water.
I have a bowl in here,” Myrtle responded as she began to search for the bowl.
“Wait a minute, what about dinner?
Won’t you be missed at dinner?
Someone can just decide to come and look for you here,” Ivan asked with a concerned look in his sharp eyes.
“It all depends.
How long are you going to look inside the bowl?
I don’t think I can be late for dinner.
At least not as late as Mishka.
She’s not back from wherever she went yet,” Myrtle remarked when she found the wooden bowl.
She then walked over to a sink and filled it up with water.
“Can you see that I’m still on top of my game?
I still know when Mishka comes and goes,” Myrtle commented with a smug grin on her lips and her head cocked sideways as she looked at Ivan.
“Oh, just be careful with becoming too confident about your abilities.
Remember, it’s always better to know the other person’s abilities,” Ivan remarked with both his hands on the stick and his chin resting on them as he studied Myrtle’s movements.
“Just look into this water now and my heart will be more at ease,” Myrtle remarked instead of defending herself.
“Okay then, let me see which young werewolves are trying to catch you out,” Ivan responded as he walked up to the water-filled bowl.
“You’re going to have to give me some oils to mix into the water,” he remarked while he stared at the water.
“What kind of oil?” Myrtle asked.
She could not remember what they had used the last time when Ivan performed the procedure.
It was a long time since she had asked him to look into some people’s activities.
“Some oriental perfumed oil,” Ivan suggested.
“Oh, that’s up in my bedroom,” Myrtle responded with a sigh of frustration.
“Then ask a maid to go and fetch it.
She’ll think that it’s for a cure,” Ivan responded.
“I don’t usually come down here at this time and what if the maid sees you?
You can’t go back into cat form?” Myrtle asked with her brows arched high from anxiety.
“Oh, I know how to hide.
Unless you want to fetch it yourself?” Ivan asked.
“I think I will do just that,” Myrtle replied.
“I will act as if I forgot to do something down here earlier today,” she added.
She then walked to the door and turned around to make sure that Ivan was still there.
“Hide behind that cupboard in case someone comes down while I’m out,” she suggested in a low tone of voice.
“Oh, why don’t you just lock and leave with the key?” Ivan responded.
“Great idea, but then it’s really gonna look suspicious if someone comes here by chance.
I’m not supposed to be doing anything secretive,” Myrtle remarked, with a worried look in her eyes.
“You’re going to have to take that chance,” Ivan responded with a shrug.
“Great, I’ll do just that,” Myrtle responded.
“In case I’m followed, you will just have to change back into your cat form and leap through the window,” she concluded before closing the door behind herself and locking it from the outside.
Myrtle walked back up the stairs softly, but when she reached the hallway, walking towards the other staircase, she heard a commotion in the kitchen.
“Now, what on earth is that?
Should I go and find out or continue hiding myself?” she whispered to herself in confusion.
