Chapter 102: Wrapping Up
Chapter 102: Wrapping Up
In the vast dining hall, the stench of blood was pungent, and the thick cast-iron floor was covered in craters of all sizes, a clear sign of the fierce battle that had taken place here.
When Diris’s head was kicked apart by Chen Chong, the final victor was decided, and Long Ying, crouched in the corner, felt his heart pound wildly, his entire body instantly tensing up with extreme nervousness.
In his eyes, Chen Chong, the final victor, was overwhelmingly power ful and brutal in his methods; if the other party harbored any ill intent, then he would be like a fish on a chopping board, completely at the mercy of others.
He was now gravely injured, with only the strength for one last desperate fight left. This was originally something he had been building up as a final, life-or-death strike prepared for Diris. However, facing Chen Chong, who had beaten Diris—someone far stronger than him—to death, he had absolutely no confidence at all!
In a world like this, hoping for the mercy of others was undoubtedly a foolish thing to do. But Long Ying had no good options now and could only hope the other party meant no harm.
Naturally unaware of Long Ying’s current anxiety, Chen Chong stood beside Diris’s headless corpse, his Body Tempering Iron Body dismissed and his body returned to normal size, his brows tightly furrowed.
Although the information Diris had revealed was extremely limited, he had still glimpsed a key point: this so-called Human Demon was clearly an extremely dangerous existence in this wasteland world, and it sounded like it was the mortal enemy of all survivors!
And Diris had repeatedly begged not to be eaten, which seemed to imply that this so-called Human Demon fed on humans!
The thought turned, but there were no further clues. As if suddenly thinking of something, Chen Chong abruptly turned his head to look at the uneasy Long Ying in the corner and asked aloud:
“Hey, that Human Demon thing he mentioned just now, do you know what it is?”
Clearly startled by Chen Chong’s sudden question, Long Ying’s heart tightened. Sensing that this fierce man’s tone was rather calm, he thought for a moment, took a deep breath, and said:
“Human Demon… I’ve never heard this term before. Maybe it’s the name of some kind of Radiation Species?”
Chen Chong narrowed his eyes and stared intently at Long Ying: “Oh? Are you sure?”
Long Ying’s expression shifted slightly, and he said firmly: “I’m very sure. I’ve lived here for eighteen years, and this is the first time I’ve heard this word.”
Then why did Diris say I was a Human Demon?
Seeing that Long Ying’s expression didn’t seem feigned, Chen Chong was even more puzzled. Thinking of this, he couldn’t help but touch his blackish-blue, fierce-looking face, and a strange thought arose:
“Could it be that I already look so vicious now?”
In fact, he didn’t dwell on it much; Diris had been half-crazed in that state, so his words naturally couldn’t be taken entirely seriously.
Tap tap tap…
Just as Chen Chong was pondering, the sound of light footsteps suddenly approached rapidly from the corridor.
Chen Chong turned his head and then saw Lin Kun rush into the dining hall entrance with less than ten injured team members, all looking extremely anxious.
They immediately spotted Chen Chong, the only one standing in the center of the dining hall. Their hearts first tightened, and then their gazes shifted, instantly discovering their leader, Long Ying, in another corner, their expressions drastically changing!
At that moment, Long Ying was leaning against a corner of the dining hall. The powerful and dignified image they remembered was gone; he was covered in blood and seemed to have suffered extremely severe injuries.
What was going on? What exactly had happened here!?
Lin Kun and the other team members jolted awake at once. Without even stopping to think, they raised their guns and pointed them at Chen Chong, who appeared completely unharmed, treating him as a formidable enemy.
The thunderous booms that had come from the dining hall as they ran over were naturally heard clearly by them, but they had no idea what had happened. Seeing Long Ying in such a state now, they assumed it was Chen Chong’s doing.
“Put down your guns!”
Seeing his own men aiming their guns at a fierce man like Chen Chong, Long Ying’s eyelids twitched uncontrollably, fearing they would provoke him, and he immediately shouted:
“He’s one of us!”
The team he had brought had just entered the base and was immediately ambushed, suffering heavy losses. And now he himself was severely injured, with only the strength for one last fight left. In such a battered and defeated state, starting a conflict with Chen Chong would absolutely not be a wise move. Since the other party had once been Lin Kun’s prison mate and had led the prisoners to escape together, he might not be an utterly evil person. It was best to pacify him first.
One of us? Could it be a powerful reinforcement invited by the leader?
Hearing Long Ying’s shout, Lin Kun and the others couldn’t help but exchange glances. A possibility came to mind, and they heaved a great sigh of relief.
Earlier in the Experiment Hall, they vividly remembered how the maniacal Katherine and the other guards had died. Actually, the moment they raised their guns against a fierce man like Chen Chong, every single one of them felt a strong surge of regret. Hearing Long Ying say that the other party was actually one of them naturally filled them with immense relief.
Hearing Long Ying’s words, Chen Chong chuckled, neither denying nor confirming it. Lin Kun and the others then carefully stepped past Chen Chong and went to Long Ying’s side to begin medical treatment.
With the corner of his eye constantly watching Chen Chong’s movements, Long Ying felt as if he had a thorn in his back, but he had no better way. He sighed softly to Lin Kun: “Are you the only ones left?”
Lin Kun’s expression was also rather heavy, and he immediately reported: “Casualties are probably over fifteen. Qiao Jun and the other squad leaders are all gravely injured and have lost their combat ability. We left a few people to treat them and rushed over immediately. We won’t know the specific casualty situation until we return to the Experiment Area.”
Lin Kun turned his head and glanced at Chen Chong:
“If it weren’t for this gentleman’s help, our losses would likely have been even greater.”
Long Ying’s face instantly turned ashen. Without a doubt, for such heavy losses, he, as the leader who formulated the combat plan, had to bear the greatest responsibility.
Not far away, Chen Chong looked at Lin Kun, his only acquaintance, and asked:
“On your way here, did you see any white people besides the guards and soldiers? What about those researchers?”
Surprised that Chen Chong was asking him, and faintly sensing that the other’s face seemed very familiar, Lin Kun couldn’t help but pause, then answered:
“I don’t think I saw a single one of those researchers. Not only the researchers, but I also didn’t see any instruments, materials, or anything like that. Judging by the situation, it seems they already anticipated we would come, so they evacuated in advance?”
“Oh? I’ll go search the place.”
Chen Chong’s brows furrowed. His figure immediately shot forward, and with a single leap, he was on the second floor of the dining hall, following the corridor towards the area where the researchers’ quarters were.
As it turned out, upon searching, he found the entire dormitory area was empty. The people were gone, the rooms abandoned; not one of the dozen or so researchers was seen. After a quick inspection, he also discovered that not only the research personnel but also places like the archives were mostly empty, with nothing left behind.
“Realized they were exposed, so they evacuated all these researchers in advance? Diris stayed behind specifically just to avenge his little lover?”
Chen Chong roughly figured out what had happened:
“He really was a true love… I suppose I helped this pair of wretched lovers meet their end.”
