Chapter 323 – The Last Emperor
The day after spending the night at the Fengtian Yamato Hotel, we visited the Mukden Palace in the afternoon in order to be granted an audience with Puyi, Chief Executive of the Manchurian Autonomous Government.
The Mukden Palace was an old Qing Dynasty secondary palace located in the old district of Fengtian, surrounded by ancient city walls. Part of its interior had been refurbished and was now being used as the government offices of the Manchurian Autonomous Government.
Though it was called the government office, the actual administration worked elsewhere, so if one considered the Chief Executive equivalent to a prime minister, it was more like an official residence. However, since it was also the residence of Puyi, the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty, and because the people of Manchuria referred to him as “His Majesty,” it was also called the “Temporary Imperial Palace.”
