I went to the bakery on Thursday morning.

The old woman was behind the counter. Same as always. She handed me the melon bread and took my money.

I bought three this time.

She looked at the bread. Then she looked at me.

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡgq8NQJBhEN

"Three," she said.

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡWvxYfDrBIR

"Yes."

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡUGgnRNs2oO

"For friends?"

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡyFyOR7gj4v

I thought about it.

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡxjSSnAT2MW

"I don't know," I said.

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡLcJFsQgZGk

She looked at me for a long moment. Then she nodded.

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡmY0u85tKe8

"Okay."

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ9vOMIgg3Aa

I took the bread and left.

I gave one to Charlotte at the gate.

She took it without a word. She didn't ask why. She didn't thank me. She just held it in her hands and looked at it.

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡtNqfqF3dc0

"I bought three," I said.

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡXDLgllk5q1

"I can see that."

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡxGZQGRgUDT

"One for me. One for you. One for—"

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡplTuR4d1Kz

I stopped.

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡR0qQYYEZ0k

She looked at me.

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡjfZqI51bLQ

"One for who?"

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡBViCpvVufp

I didn't answer.

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡZTXZXpTKLJ

She looked at the bread in her hands.

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡPHZOvlW8FT

"One for Hana," she said.

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡUNF8rRRAhM

I didn't say anything.

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡbneGGXJwrJ

"She doesn't eat," Charlotte said. "You noticed."

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡdDSqHkCIVw

"Yes."

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ6XZIYYCNkN

"She never eats. She says she eats at home. But she doesn't."

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡaaxB6uqHTp

"How do you know?"

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡIw9xmjvTKo

"Because I watch her too."

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ2mufpA9Ob7

She looked at me.

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡhQ3VYz1UfA

"You're not the only one who notices things," she said.

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡyaozALlAvF

She turned and walked away.

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡ4cUeS6Lhj8

I stood at the gate with the third melon bread in my hand.

11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡaL0QokN23h

I didn't know what to do with it. 11Please respect copyright.ＰＥＮＡＮＡuzjOfsZPyW
