Chapter 18: The Righteous Spirit in His Heart Revealed for You
Running a business like Chen Yuan’s was nothing like running an ordinary supermarket or shop, where customers came and went all day. Before Chen Yuan had truly made a name for himself, the secluded spot he had chosen saw so few passersby each day that they could be counted on one hand, let alone anyone who would stop to have their fortune told.
In fact, this was exactly the state Chen Yuan wanted. When practicing metaphysics, choosing a quiet environment was always beneficial. By comparison, if he had chosen a busy commercial area and had people crowding around his stall, that would have been the real joke.
So although he came to the park and sat there every morning, he didn’t actually get many customers. Chen Yuan wasn’t going to sit there doing nothing, though. He could think over the classics he had read, ponder the examples he had encountered over the past few days and consider whether they differed from the fortune-telling cases he had dealt with in the past. It was quite pleasant.
By noon, just as promised, Yu Shenliu drove over to pick Chen Yuan up.
Chen Yuan was actually a little curious. After meeting Yu Shenliu, he had noticed that many of the man’s habits were quite different from what he had previously understood about government officials. Normally, even at lunchtime, shouldn’t these “leaders” be so busy they barely had time to breathe? They were either working or attending some sort of dinner gathering. Yu Shenliu, on the other hand, kept regular working hours and seemed even more relaxed than an ordinary office worker. He even had time to take Chen Yuan to buy a phone, and drove himself instead of having a chauffeur drive him around.
Chen Yuan had always considered asking whatever came to mind one of his strengths. Sitting in the passenger seat, he glanced at everything outside the window and asked Yu Shenliu, “Isn’t work important? I thought you’d be really busy.”
Yu Shenliu was silent for a moment before calmly answering, “The major matters are naturally handled by the Party Secretary and the mayor. I’m happy to have some free time.”
His tone was calm, but his words might not have been. Hearing Yu Shenliu’s answer, Chen Yuan turned his gaze from the scenery outside and looked at him. Did he mean that because he was young, the others were keeping him in check and he didn’t have much power in his hands? But Yu Shenliu was proud by nature, so naturally he would be unhappy about this. Although he was well-mannered, traces of that displeasure still showed in his words.
“Feeling frustrated?” Chen Yuan asked, studying Yu Shenliu’s complexion at the same time. The last time he had looked at him, he had only taken a rough look, too busy marveling at how exceptionally good his fate was. Afterward, he had only looked at his short-term fortune and hadn’t carefully examined his recent political prospects. At this angle, all he could see was Yu Shenliu’s profile, so he couldn’t make much of it.
“They can’t stop me.” Yu Shenliu answered without thinking. At his age and with his abilities, even if he was being held back now, it would only be temporary. Although being suppressed like this was frustrating, Yu Shenliu knew that it was only a temporary situation, and he was confident he could gradually resolve his current predicament.
Yet the moment those words left his mouth, Yu Shenliu was secretly startled himself. They were far too sharp and arrogant, nothing like what he would normally say. And yet, perhaps because he had a sudden urge to show off, he had said them anyway.
If one had to describe what Yu Shenliu had just done, perhaps there was only one metaphor that truly fit: a male peacock spreading its tail to attract a mate.
Yu Shenliu had always been a smart man, so he saw his own impulsive behavior clearly. The moment he realized what he had done, he couldn’t help feeling a little awkward. So he could actually do something this foolish? In an instant, he suppressed the thought and pretended nothing had happened as he asked Chen Yuan, “Speaking of which, what are your plans from here on out? Are you just going to keep setting up your stall in the park?”
“I’ll keep doing it for now. I’ll build up a little reputation and save some money. When the time is right, I’ll open a shop or something. I’ll take it slowly.” Chen Yuan had been planning things this way for a long time. Before crossing over, he had been just about to complete his plans, but now that he had suddenly arrived in this world, he could only start over and take things one step at a time. Chen Yuan had always been an unhurried person anyway, so he wasn’t in any rush.
Although Yu Shenliu had already known this was probably Chen Yuan’s plan, he couldn’t help asking, “But judging from your age, you should still be in school. Don’t you plan to go to school?”
When Yu Shenliu put it that way, Chen Yuan was momentarily stunned. He really hadn’t considered continuing his education.
Before crossing over, he had just finished the college entrance examination, so normally, university would have been the next step. But his sudden arrival in this world had completely disrupted his original plans. From terms like “Huaxia Metropolitan Examination Site” and “Taixue” that he had encountered from the very beginning, it was clear that this world’s education system was probably quite different from the one he knew. If so, much of what he had already learned might not be of much use. Going to school would be rather troublesome. Not to mention that Chen Yuan didn’t even have a student record or anything of the sort. Although he could ask Yu Shenliu for help again, it would still be a hassle.
After thinking it over, Chen Yuan finally shook his head. “There’s no need.”
Originally, going to university had simply been something he was doing because everyone else did it. There was no harm in not going, and now there was no particular reason he had to continue his education. Although he was interested in systematically learning some of the things that were different in this world, compared with following a fixed schedule and being subject to restrictions at school, he would rather manage his own time and decide for himself what he wanted to do.
If it had been anyone else, Yu Shenliu would definitely have insisted that they go to school. But with Chen Yuan, he knew that Chen Yuan understood what he was doing. So Yu Shenliu merely nodded to show that he understood.
“Let me see your right hand.” At this point, Chen Yuan spoke to Yu Shenliu. Since Yu Shenliu had suffered some setbacks in the political arena, this was the perfect opportunity for Chen Yuan to repay him for taking him in. Otherwise, with a fate like Yu Shenliu’s, what could Chen Yuan possibly find an opportunity to repay him for when he lacked nothing?
Yu Shenliu glanced at Chen Yuan. Keeping his left hand on the steering wheel, he held out his right hand to Chen Yuan.
Taking Yu Shenliu’s hand, Chen Yuan supported it from underneath with his own palm, then used his other hand to gently press down on Yu Shenliu’s fingers and look at his palm.
Setting aside the various lines crisscrossing his palm, the hand itself was broad, clean, and healthy-looking. Since he was looking into Yu Shenliu’s recent career, Chen Yuan immediately spotted his Sun Line.
The so-called Sun Line was the line that ran downward from beneath the ring finger, crossing the Heart Line along the way. For some people, this line was faint or even nonexistent; for others, it was broken and discontinuous. The Sun Line on Yu Shenliu’s hand, although not as prominent as the three major lines, was still clear and deep. One look was enough to tell that he truly had the makings of a good fate.
There were many lines on a person’s hand, each with its own meaning. Some schools of palmistry ignored all lines other than the three major ones when reading palms, but Chen Yuan liked to pay attention to these finer lines.
Looking closely, however, the color of this line was not as healthy and vibrant as it should be. It looked somewhat dull. Other people might not have noticed any difference, but to Chen Yuan, it was obvious.
“Looks like your recent fortune is facing some obstacles, but they won’t affect your overall fortune.” Chen Yuan released Yu Shenliu’s hand and said this. A temporary spell of bad luck was normal. Otherwise, was Yu Shenliu supposed to be able to slay every god he encountered and cut down every demon that crossed his path? Everything had its ups and downs. That was only natural.
Chen Yuan had said before that having some bad luck in one’s short-term fortune was not necessarily a bad thing, and Yu Shenliu understood that as well. But when it came to this matter, Yu Shenliu had some other considerations.
“Chen Yuan, is there any way you can help me get out of this situation sooner? Only if I can take control as quickly as possible will I have room to make use of my abilities.”
Chen Yuan raised an eyebrow. “You really want to?”
He had never liked interfering with the course of someone’s fortune in matters like this. But since Yu Shenliu was asking, and knowing his personality, Chen Yuan also knew that he must have his reasons.
“If possible, I’d appreciate it,” Yu Shenliu replied.
“All right. I’ll take a look when we get back.” Since he insisted, Chen Yuan decided to help him out. It would count as repaying him a little.
Yu Shenliu pulled the car to a stop. “It’s a deal. We’re here. Let’s go.”
Chen Yuan looked out the window and saw a plaza. He opened the door and got out.
