Chapter 32: Those Who Do Much Evil Will Face Retribution
After receiving the unpleasant news from Skinny Monkey, Huo Shu seemed a little down. Still, she kept her composure, not wanting her emotions to affect the people around her.
Chen Yuan thought about it for a while and decided that, if he wanted to comfort Huo Shu, perhaps there was one thing he could say that fit the situation best: What girl hasn’t fallen for a jerk at least once?
In life, you’ll always meet all kinds of people. No one can have everything go smoothly all the time. You’re bound to encounter unpleasant people and things, but why let them affect the rest of your life? Life is long, with plenty of time ahead of you. Wasting all that time on unpleasant people and things would be such a waste. Life is short, too. If you spend too much of it on these unpleasant people and things, how much time will you have left to enjoy yourself and live freely?
Once Huo Shu realized that Rong Yan wasn’t the right person for her, she immediately chose to cut ties with him rather than hoping she could change him or something like that. This was a choice Chen Yuan admired. Perhaps some people believed that relationships were built through effort, but there was no telling how much hurt one might have to endure along the way.
Why bother clinging to it?
So, honestly, Chen Yuan found that he really liked the Huo siblings, and even their uncle, Yu Shenliu. A lot of their personalities suited him very well.
“Don’t worry. Those thugs won’t cause you much trouble. This will pass.” Chen Yuan spoke softly. Having already examined Huo Shu’s complexion, he was naturally confident.
Hearing him say that so suddenly, Huo Shu couldn’t quite explain what she was feeling. On one hand, common sense told her that since Rong Yan had gone so far as to hire thugs to cause trouble for her, getting rid of him easily afterward wouldn’t be so simple. She might even have to rely on the difference in their family backgrounds to keep him in check.
On the other hand, Chen Yuan had repeatedly done things that amazed her, and part of her wanted to believe him.
Huo Shu’s mindset was the same as that of most ordinary people. On the one hand, they talked about science all the time, yet when faced with something they couldn’t explain, they instinctively sought help from metaphysics. They might not mention it in their daily lives, but deep down, they still had some faith in it. After all, with thousands of years of cultural history behind it, metaphysics was actually everywhere, and simply denying it wasn’t so easy.
On the other hand, influenced by their modern education and environment, as well as by all the charlatans who had been exposed over the years, they instinctively questioned metaphysics too, wondering whether it was really just people putting on an act or perhaps another manifestation of science.
That was why, whenever Huo Shu interacted with Chen Yuan, she couldn’t help asking questions and getting to the bottom of things. After all, so many of the things Chen Yuan did seemed far too mysterious. Not merely amazing, but downright mystical. Take the women’s arts from earlier. After going through the whole ritual, it had felt as though nothing had happened. Even a charlatan would at least have the little figure burn or something, just to make it look as though the technique had taken effect. Without seeing some kind of result with her own eyes, she simply couldn’t feel reassured.
At this point, Sheng Kong chimed in. “You have to believe Master Chen! Master Chen is seriously amazing! When my mom dragged me to Master Chen to have my physiognomy read, I thought he was a fraud too. But look at my situation this time. I had absolutely no confidence going into the exam, yet my results completely exceeded my expectations, and Master Chen saw it at a glance!”
Huo Shu was still feeling somewhat gloomy, but as Sheng Kong enthusiastically praised Chen Yuan’s abilities, her mood gradually improved. There was something very cheerful about Sheng Kong that made it easy for others to feel happier around him. No wonder Chen Yuan liked him. It was just that, under these circumstances, her uncle was feeling a little dejected.
Huo Shu deliberately struck up a conversation with Sheng Kong, leaving the other two out of it, doing her best to create an opportunity for her uncle. As they chatted, she also found herself caring less about Skinny Monkey’s behavior earlier.
At that moment, just one street away from Chen Yuan and the others, Boss Wang stood by the roadside, anxiously looking around with a paper package clutched in his hand.
What Chen Yuan had told him to do was perform good deeds for three months, until the jade shattered. At first, Boss Wang had considered sponsoring the orphans’ education, but after asking the orphanage, he found that it would cost far too much. He couldn’t bring himself to spend that much money on it. After thinking it over, he figured that doing good deeds was doing good deeds, so he might as well take these people, who normally didn’t get to eat anything particularly good, out for a nice meal. That counted as a good deed too. Afterward, he could explain the arrangement to the orphanage and nursing home, then call in the TV stations and promote it extensively. That way, his good deed would look significant enough, wouldn’t it? And it would also help him build an image as a philanthropic businessman, right?
That was what Boss Wang thought. Deep down, though, he had an even more secretive thought.
What exactly counted as a good deed? And what did it mean to have done enough good deeds? How could you weigh the difference between donating a piece of clothing, helping clean up, and donating money? Wasn’t it impossible to say whether treating these children to a meal or donating money for their education was actually better? Once he had the TV stations promote it, what he had done would look like a great good deed too. Maybe he could get away with it that way… After all, there was quite a difference between the cost of treating them to one meal and continuously sponsoring their education. If he had to give away his entire fortune just to do good deeds, then what would be the point of doing good deeds in the first place?
With this hopeful sense of lucking out, Boss Wang had continued doing these “good deeds” for days.
However, this morning, the “ritual tool” that Boss Wang always wore around his neck shattered.
Chen Yuan had told him to keep doing good deeds until the ritual tool shattered, but the way it broke left Boss Wang uneasy. He had accidentally tripped and fallen, causing the jade to hit the ground and shatter. Did that count as the ritual tool breaking, or was it simply an accident?
Boss Wang didn’t know, so he went looking everywhere for Chen Yuan to ask.
He went to the park but couldn’t find Chen Yuan. Then he went to the market where Chen Yuan bought many of the materials he used to make ritual tools, but he didn’t see him there either. He didn’t dare go looking for Yu Shenliu, so in the end, he could only walk around the area near the park, asking people one by one whether they had seen a man like Chen Yuan. But no one knew anything.
At this point, Boss Wang was extremely uneasy. He had wrapped the broken jade in paper and was carrying it around with him. On the one hand, he kept reassuring himself that this was exactly what Chen Yuan had meant: he had done enough good deeds, so the jade had shattered. On the other hand, he regretted that perhaps he shouldn’t have gone along when the orphanage director had invited him to sleep with some women… After all, those girls were from the orphanage. Then again, he thought, he had given those girls quite a bit of money, so that counted as helping them too, right?
Clutching the paper package and looking around anxiously, Boss Wang looked utterly dejected. Standing beside an intersection, his face was haggard, and it was obvious that he was worried and frightened.
At that moment, however, Rong Yan was absolutely furious.
That bitch Huo Shu had actually dared to break up with him? After saying it, she had simply disappeared. Who knew if she had run off with some other man? He had long known that the woman was up to no good. Once he found her this time, he would lock her up and teach her a proper lesson. All he had done was slap her once and yell at her a few times. Wasn’t he right to discipline her? Had he said anything wrong? He didn’t know how her parents had raised her. What was wrong with asking her to give him money to spend? What kind of car did she drive herself, and what kind of car had she bought for him? This time, he would make sure she handed over all her money for him to manage!
He had gotten a few of his buddies to look for her this time, so they should be able to find that woman soon. If she refused to listen, he would let his buddies have their way with her and see if that made her behave!
She didn’t know what was good for her!
Behind the glass, the person gripping the steering wheel wore a vicious expression.
At that moment, Rong Yan looked up and spotted a familiar figure.
On the pedestrian overpass ahead, just before the intersection, Huo Shu was walking with several men.
A vile thought instinctively crossed Rong Yan’s mind, and he flew into a rage. His car window happened to be wide open. With blood rushing to his head, he didn’t think twice and instinctively stuck his head out the window, glaring at Huo Shu and shouting, “Bitch!”
His hand jerked on the steering wheel as he did so.
Screech—Bang!
Everyone who happened to witness the scene instinctively closed their eyes.
“What happened?” On the pedestrian overpass, the group stared in stunned silence. From up there, they could see the scene below.
It was clearly a car accident. Near the intersection, a car had veered off and crashed into a lamppost beside the sidewalk, its front end badly mangled. Someone lay in front of the car, blood pooling beneath their body, completely motionless.
Half of the driver’s body was hanging limply out of the car window. He appeared to be unconscious as well.
“Is that… Rong Yan?” Huo Shu murmured in disbelief as she stared at the car. She thought she had just heard Rong Yan’s voice, but then this happened?
Chen Yuan, meanwhile, spotted Boss Wang lying off to the side.
“Could this be the result of that technique?” Huo Shu asked Chen Yuan uneasily. She was afraid that the technique she had used to sever ties with Rong Yan had somehow caused this, and she felt unsettled.
Chen Yuan slowly shook his head. “That was only a technique to make it easier to end a relationship. It couldn’t have caused something like this.”
“This is retribution in this life. Looks like the two of them did something they shouldn’t have, and had thoughts they shouldn’t have.”
