Chapter 33: The Power of Women’s Arts Is Proven
Often, you’ll find that when you happen to be connected to two wicked people, the two of them may ultimately suffer retribution for their actions in ways that are connected. You might think it is merely a coincidence, but if you look at it from another perspective, it isn’t simply a matter of coincidence. Because the evil deeds committed by these two people are both connected to you, the causes and consequences of their wrongdoing are similar as well, and that is partly why they ultimately meet the same fate. As for Boss Wang and Rong Yan, the reason they ended up like this and happened to have it all unfold before Chen Yuan and the others was not simply a coincidence either. Some inexplicable mechanism was quietly at work behind the scenes.
That was why people said that Heaven’s will was to be feared.
Ordinary people would never think about such things, but Chen Yuan, standing on the pedestrian overpass and looking down at the scene, understood it clearly. He was still an ordinary person, after all, and seeing such a terrible accident naturally stirred pity in him. At the same time, however, he knew that this must have happened because Rong Yan and Boss Wang had done things they shouldn’t have done.
Just as Chen Yuan had vaguely felt all along that even if he explained everything clearly to Boss Wang, Boss Wang would still end up making a mess of things and leaving the situation beyond repair. Even knowing how things would unfold, he would never forcefully interfere. A person’s fate was, to a great extent, shaped by their own words and actions. Everyone had to take responsibility for their own choices. Others had neither the right nor the ability to interfere.
If Boss Wang had sincerely done what he was supposed to do without trying to cut corners along the way, then with the piece of jade Chen Yuan had treated for him, even if he was destined to suffer a calamity, it shouldn’t have happened now. And how many days had it been? Boss Wang had already been hit by Rong Yan’s car. It was obvious that he had done something he shouldn’t have.
Misfortune brought by Heaven can still be remedied; misfortune brought upon oneself leaves no way to live.
“Do you think they’re dead?” Someone quickly called the traffic police and an ambulance, and Rong Yan and Boss Wang were soon taken away. Huo Shu looked at the car left behind and murmured to herself. The scene had been truly frightening.
Chen Yuan slowly shook his head. If they were talking about death, in his view, the two of them weren’t at that point yet. Judging from Rong Yan’s physiognomy that he had examined before and what he knew about Boss Wang, although both of them had committed some minor wrongs, neither had committed major crimes or done anything terribly wrong. After all, could they really have started a war and caused widespread death and destruction in just a few days? Besides, even death came in different forms. If someone had truly committed a grave offense and was destined to die as retribution, a car accident would hardly be such a comfortable way to die, would it? A car accident might look horrific, but once a person lost consciousness, they wouldn’t feel much. As far as death as retribution went, it could hardly be considered much of a punishment.
They had been too far away just now. Although Chen Yuan could tell who the two people were, he couldn’t see their exact condition. Otherwise, he would have been able to immediately determine just how much retribution had befallen them.
Yu Shenliu, however, changed the subject and said to Huo Shu, “In any case, that guy Rong Yan won’t be able to bother you anymore. Don’t forget how severe the penalties for causing a traffic accident are in our country. He was clearly the one at fault just now. You won’t have to worry about him for several years, right?”
Huo Shu nodded, finally feeling completely relieved. The laws of Huaxia were relatively lenient in most areas, but they were exceptionally strict in a few. Anyone suspected of offenses involving education, social welfare, scientific research, traffic accidents, official corruption, or economic crimes would be punished extremely severely. In cases involving education and several other areas, the Ten Tortures had even been retained as a form of punishment. Traffic offenses were considered the least serious among these, but they could still result in several years in prison, and after release, the offender would be prohibited from driving or owning a car for ten years.
It had only been a short while since Chen Yuan had had her perform that strange technique whose effects she couldn’t see at all, telling her that the matter would be resolved just like this. And now, how long had it been? This had happened right before her eyes. Chen Yuan was practically too mystical to seem human.
In fact, just a few minutes earlier, Huo Shu had still harbored some doubts about Chen Yuan. But after what had happened, she felt just like Sheng Kong did: Chen Yuan really was a mystic. What was a mystic? Someone who couldn’t be observed through science!
After all, unlike those charlatans who wandered jianghu, Chen Yuan genuinely had real ability. And in this world, someone who truly possessed such abilities never needed to worry about remaining unknown. Many people were just like Huo Shu: they went from disbelief, to half-belief and half-doubt, and finally to complete conviction.
They hadn’t even made it off the pedestrian overpass when a traffic officer hurried over and saluted. “Hello. Were you all witnesses to the accident that just occurred?”
The government certainly worked efficiently, sending someone over to investigate and handle the accident so quickly.
Yu Shenliu nodded. He was familiar with this sort of investigation procedure and, before the officer could even ask, took the initiative to describe what had happened. “Yes. Before the driver passed beneath the overpass, he suddenly stuck his head out of the window. The car went out of control at the same time and struck the pedestrian beside the road. The pedestrian hadn’t violated any traffic regulations. The fault should lie entirely with the driver. If I’m not mistaken, the pedestrian was a mobile phone shop owner, the one who recently treated a group of orphans to a meal at Wangjiang Tower. His surname is Wang. The driver is a man named Rong Yan, a good-for-nothing thug.”
That was certainly detailed. The traffic officer quickly recorded everything, then, once he had finished, saluted again. “Thank you, Mayor Yu.”
Apparently, he had recognized who they were from the start. He simply hadn’t said anything.
This made Chen Yuan snicker. Yu Shenliu gave him a helpless look, which only made him laugh even harder.
“Excuse me, may I ask how those two are doing?” Not knowing exactly how serious the accident had been, Huo Shu was still a little worried, so she asked the traffic officer.
“The driver wasn’t seriously injured. He probably just lost consciousness from the impact. The pedestrian appears to have suffered a broken leg,” the traffic officer replied.
Chen Yuan wore an expression that said he had expected as much.
“All right, are we still going to Wangjiang Tower?” Yu Shenliu asked once Huo Shu had finished. There was no point staying here. After witnessing something like this, none of them were likely to have much of an appetite anyway, so he asked.
Chen Yuan was accustomed to seeing similar cases of retribution and wasn’t affected by it. Instead, he looked at Huo Shu and Sheng Kong.
Huo Shu gritted her teeth. “We’re going. Why wouldn’t we?” Although she didn’t feel particularly good about what had happened, giving up now would somehow feel like letting Rong Yan get away with it.
“Since the lady says so, then I guess we’re going?” Sheng Kong chimed in. Huo Shu smiled at him.
The smile caught Sheng Kong off guard, and he couldn’t help blushing. He rarely interacted with girls before, and this was the first time a girl had smiled at him so gently.
Later, they heard that Rong Yan’s sentence had been increased because he was found actively at fault for the accident, and he was sentenced to five years in prison. As for Boss Wang, although he underwent surgery in time, one of his legs was still left crippled for various reasons.
A month later, the former mayor of Jincheng City fell from power due to corruption and bribery, implicating a large number of officials. A new mayor was appointed to Jincheng, while Yu Shenliu was transferred to serve as deputy mayor in charge of education, finally gaining real authority.
Chen Yuan didn’t know whether Yu Shenliu had played a part in bringing down the former mayor. However, he understood that Heaven’s justice had existed since ancient times. Every little thing you did, even without thinking much of it, was recorded. There was never any room for luck.
