Chapter 17: First Encounter with the Vet
In their first confrontation that afternoon, Lin You won both a verbal and psychological victory over Lu Yuan. Unfortunately, this was not Young Master Lin You’s ultimate victory. At least, in Lin You’s opinion, the man who left with a stiff expression had still caused him no small amount of trouble. And now, because of that trouble, he was arguing his case with his vicious master.
“You heartless man~ You ungrateful bastard~~ This lord can’t go home because of you~ I can’t even get online~ I work tirelessly as your guide parrot every day without a single complaint~~ and you actually want someone to stick sharp objects into my tender flesh~ Oh, heavens~ Oh, earth~ Come save me~~”
Mu Yanxiao, “…” Even though he had known that the parrot would vehemently protest the moment he made the suggestion, he still found his mournful howling rather unbearable.
“Isn’t it just a vaccination?” Mu Yanxiao sighed and rubbed his temples, somewhat exasperated. “It’ll only hurt for a moment. If the veterinarian is skilled enough, you probably won’t even feel it.”
Upon hearing this, Lin You immediately flapped his wings and smacked Mu Yanxiao. “Are you kidding me?! Let me tell you, this lord doesn’t trust veterinarians’ skills at all. Even proper medical experts have moments when they lose their minds and make mistakes! How can you bear to let someone stick a needle into me?”
“If I die, your future will become bleak and miserable.” Lin You ended with an especially heartfelt sigh.
The corners of Mu Yanxiao’s lips twitched.
“Don’t worry. If you die, I’ll turn you into a specimen so you can stay by my side forever.”
Lin You was instantly thrown into chaos. He froze for a moment before forcing out an awkward laugh. “Uh… don’t you think it’s a little too heartless to refuse to let a bird rest even after it’s dead? At least let me be buried properly… or cremated? Just thinking about becoming a specimen is exhausting.”
Mu Yanxiao’s lips curled slightly at the hesitation and vulnerability in Lin You’s voice, but the next moment, his gaze darkened. He reached out and rubbed the little parrot’s head, his voice gentle but firm. “Rest assured. I won’t let you die that easily.”
Lin You’s eyes immediately lit up, only for Mu Yanxiao to continue, “So I’ll find the best veterinarian and have them vaccinate you without making any mistakes.”
Lin You, “…” He hated this carrot-and-stick approach!
That night, Lin You the parrot, the ever-present caregiver, expressed his dissatisfaction with his master in his own unique way.
During dinner, he made sure to eat all the meat from Mu Yanxiao’s bowl first, leaving him with nothing but vegetables. When it was time to bathe, he grabbed the towel in his beak, ran around with it, and then dropped it directly onto Mu Yanxiao’s head. And when it was time to sleep, he deliberately turned on the television and watched entertainment shows, laughing so hard that he nearly rolled off the bed.
Mu Yanxiao felt slightly exasperated by his parrot’s endless and utterly blatant acts of revenge. He had originally thought that his parrot’s occasional bouts of craziness and mockery were the extent of his ability to cause trouble. After being tormented all evening, however, Mu Yanxiao finally realized that his parrot had actually been so kind and cute before (Heh heh).
“Squawk, squawk, squawk! Hahahaha! Oh my gosh, this is so funny~~”
After being bombarded by that demonic sound once again, a vein bulged on Mu Yanxiao’s forehead. He reached toward the source of the noise, grabbed Lin You, who was rolling around on the bed laughing, and said coldly, “Turn off the TV.”
The TV obediently switched off.
Lin You struggled and flapped wildly in Mu Yanxiao’s palm.
“What are you doing?! This lord hasn’t finished watching!”
Mu Yanxiao let out a sinister chuckle. “You’re having quite a good time, aren’t you? In a very good mood?”
Lin You instinctively shivered at that ominous voice. Then he raised his head and stubbornly held his ground. “Of course! It’s a classic comedy show! I bet you’ve never watched this kind of entertainment program before! Tsk tsk, what a boring life you’ve been living.”
“Is that so? Then I regret to inform you that, from now on, you’ll be living the same boring life as me.” At that moment, Mu Yanxiao looked like a demon king straight out of hell. The black aura of resentment surrounding him was practically taking physical form.
“Fuck~ Why does this lord have to listen to you?!” Lin You immediately bristled. This lord is a shut-in, okay? If you won’t let a shut-in watch TV, play on the computer, or read novels, are you trying to murder a shut-in?!
Mu Yanxiao chuckled twice and casually pulled the blanket over them, pressing Lin You down onto the soft cushion beside his pillow. “Because you eat my food, drink my drinks, use my things, play with my things, and wear my clothes. If you don’t listen to me, what do you think will happen to you?”
Lin You the parrot, whose entire life was in someone else’s hands, “…”
After a long silence, Lin You collapsed onto the cushion, filled with bitterness and resentment, and shed a sympathetic tear for his miserable fate. Today was definitely his day of disaster. The Netherworld Network was under maintenance, an enemy who wanted to poison him had shown up at his door, his master wanted to take him for an injection, and now his entertainment had been cruelly taken away…
For a moment, Young Master Lin You felt that life was simply too exhausting to bear. He sighed and muttered, “When will this kind of life ever end… Let me go home. I don’t even mind worshipping the Three Pure Ones in the future.”
Mu Yanxiao noticed that his parrot suddenly fell silent after saying that. First came the faint sound of a small body collapsing onto the cushion. Then came a tiny sigh of dejection, so quiet that it was almost imperceptible, yet still audible to him.
His heart tightened.
Mu Yanxiao felt around until his fingers found Lin You’s wing. Feeling the softness of the little body beneath his fingers, his heart softened as well. In the end, he shook his head and gave a helpless, bitter smile. “Forget it. If you don’t want to get vaccinated, then you don’t have to. You’ve already become a spirit, after all. I doubt you’ll catch the diseases that ordinary birds get.”
Lin You paused when he heard this. Feeling the care and concession in Mu Yanxiao’s voice, his gloomy mood immediately improved. He thought about it. After all, he was a parrot now. Although his situation was somewhat like possessing another body, the body itself was still that of an ordinary parrot.
“Fine. After thinking about it, I guess we should still go for a checkup and get vaccinated tomorrow. You’re already blind. What if you also came down with a fever or something? Wouldn’t that be miserable? This lord can make a tiny sacrifice for you… but! You have to compensate this lord properly!!”
Mu Yanxiao laughed when he heard this.
“I’ve never seen a parrot who’s better at bargaining than you.”
Lin You squawked twice. “Wrong! You’ll never see an animal better at bargaining than me!”
Mu Yanxiao deeply agreed. “Alright, go to sleep. Tomorrow, I can accompany you and watch that ‘entertainment program’ you find so interesting.”
Lin You was immediately surprised, then happily nodded. “Sure! If you think that’s boring, we can listen to crosstalk or storytelling together! What do you think about Justice Bao ?”
Mu Yanxiao’s lips twitched. He cautiously suggested, “Let’s stick with crosstalk. We can listen to the news together at other times.”
Young Master Lin You pouted at this.
A breeze began to blow outside, and the late-night air carried a slight chill. Inside the cozy bedroom, however, a man and a parrot nestled quietly together, surrounded by a peaceful warmth.
……
The next morning, Young Master Lin You was woken by a commotion. Still grumpy from being woken up, he angrily turned toward the source of the noise and nearly peed himself in fright.
Holy crap! What’s with that bald parrot whose wing feathers have all been plucked out?!
Looking more closely, he realized that everything around him had wings.
Did this lord fall asleep and somehow transmigrate into a fantasy world of birds?!
“Oh dear, Young Master, why does your parrot look so dazed? You told me it was very smart, didn’t you? Could he have been scared silly?”
Just as Young Master Lin You was trying to make sense of the situation, a teasing voice suddenly came from beside him. The voice was clear and cool, pleasant to the ear. The content, however, was anything but pleasant.
Lin You immediately turned his head more than a hundred degrees toward the source of the voice. The moment he saw the speaker, his habit of making smart remarks was triggered automatically.
“Wow~ A broad forehead, a straight nose, bright eyes, and a face like a peach blossom. Oh my, what a blessed appearance~ Miss, your love star is shining brightly! You’ll have some good news coming your way soon! Squawk squawk~~”
Mu Yanxiao, who had long since grown accustomed to twitching at the corners of his mouth, “…”
So this time, he had switched from mocking people to fortune-telling? Well, apart from getting the gender wrong, it actually sounded rather convincing. Sure enough, his Linlin was exceptionally smart.
The veterinarian, who was very much a man despite his feminine features, “…Heh heh. I suggest giving this parrot a full-body examination. To prevent excessive pecking and scratching during mating season, Young Master, how about we have him neutered?”
Lin You the parrot was instantly thrown into agony, his entire body going rigid, “!!”
Fuck! Why did this lord have to run his mouth again? And why did he have to run his mouth at the veterinarian?! But wait a minute!
“You were the one who called me stupid first! This lord gave you a free fortune-telling session, and you repay my kindness with enmity?!”
The veterinarian continued to sneer.
“Open those beady little eyes of yours and take a good look. Exactly what part of me looks like a woman?!”
