Chapter 29: Arising Suspicion
Looking at the bag of dangling, unidentified objects Mu Five had bought, everyone’s expressions and moods became somewhat complicated.
Mu Four, in particular, felt genuine sympathy for Mu Five. His once tall, handsome, tough-as-nails brother had somehow turned into a ruthless butcher. It was simply too horrible to look at! Please give me back the dignified and imposing Mu Five I used to know. Who is this pale-faced guy carrying pig brains?!
For a moment, the atmosphere was especially stiff and quiet.
“Alright. Let’s go back first. Mu Three should be here.”
At the critical moment, it was still Boss Mu who could keep things under control. What Lin You found particularly unbelievable, however, was that within three minutes of Mu Yanxiao saying this, that technology fanatic Mu Three showed up driving a flashy… bulldozer. Yes, a bulldozer! Are you really this awesome? Does your boss even know?!
“Boss, I heard from Brother. Zheng Yuhu made his move again?” Mu Three jumped down from his modified bulldozer and immediately got to the point.
Mu Yanxiao didn’t answer him directly. “What kind of vehicle did you drive here?”
Mu Three grinned. “Boss really knows me best. This time I brought Bulldozer Three! It’s especially awesome. After testing it out, it can flatten a single-story house in one go!”
Mu Yanxiao, “…” My subordinates are all weirdos. There’s simply no way to get through to them. As their boss, the pressure is immense.
“Get in.”
And so, the five men and one bird left amid the surrounding crowd’s thoroughly admiring gazes, riding away in the bulldozer.
Lin You was certain this bulldozer had to be a mutated model. Otherwise, since when could a bulldozer race down the road at a speed of 150 kilometers per hour? What left Lin You even more speechless was that the bulldozer didn’t even have a license plate. He wondered what kind of miserable expression the traffic police would have if they caught this thing speeding.
As Lin You left with his blind master, a young man dressed in a black Tang suit slowly emerged from the corner of the warehouse wall where they had just taken shelter from the car accident.
The young man held a yellow-brown paper crane in his hand. The paper crane was still struggling desperately, and a voice came from it. “Little Brother! Little Brother! It’s your Second Brother! Your Second Sister-in-law had a nightmare last night! She dreamed that my Linlin died! She’s been distracted all day and has already accidentally injured me several times with her twin swords! Your Second Brother can’t take this anymore! Forget about your thousand-year-old zombie! Go check on my Linlin! He’s your nephew! Besides, you’re both oddballs from the Lin Family! You should look after each other!”
A vein suddenly bulged on the young man’s forehead, making his already sinister and cold expression even more chilling. With a forceful motion of his left hand, a genuine flame of Samadhi Fire appeared and burned the yellow-brown paper crane to ashes.
“Oddball? Your whole family are the oddballs.” The young man’s voice was as cool and deep as jade, but the mocking words completely ruined his otherworldly air. Even so, despite saying that, he still frowned slightly. His right fingertips touched together, and after a moment, his eyebrows rose slightly. He let out a cold laugh. “A bloodshed calamity three days from now?”
“They must have died from stupidity.”
With that sarcastic remark, the young man turned and left without hesitation. However, when he passed a stall selling guinea pigs, he stopped. He casually pointed at one that looked as though it was already on the verge of death. The delighted stall owner happily handed over the cage, and the young man carried it away.
An hour later, the terminally ill guinea pig had quietly and mysteriously settled into a small burrow in the Mu Family’s “farmhouse” villa. Inside the burrow was a pile of peanuts that the other rats had “offered” him, under duress, of course. The guinea pig simply lay beside the peanuts, quietly waiting for his death a few days later.
Meanwhile, inside the Mu Family villa.
Mu Yanxiao sat on the sofa, listening to Mu One’s work report. Mu One’s face was filled with murderous intent.
“The Zheng Family’s largest domestic industry is entertainment. To put it simply, that means three amusement parks, four high-end bars, and two golf courses. Because other forces are involved with the bars and golf courses, we can’t act against them directly this time. However, the three large amusement parks can be taken directly under our control. As for the bars, three will be forced to close, and one of the golf courses will be shut down.”
Only then did Mu Yanxiao give a slight nod. “Last time, I told them what would happen, and they thought I was joking. Since that’s the case, let them face the consequences of that joke.” As he spoke, Mu Yanxiao reached out and stroked his parrot’s head. “Linlin, in another half a month, we’ll be able to go play at our own amusement park. How about giving you one of the three amusement parks?”
Young Master Lin You, was instantly stunned by the unexpected windfall, “!!”
“Squawk! Master, you’re my idol! Master, let’s ride the roller coaster together! You can grab onto me and scream as loudly as you want!!”
His idol master, “…” Shouldn’t you be the one flying through the sky while watching me scream? Can you stop being a lunatic at least once a day?
Just as the atmosphere was becoming pleasant and harmonious, the doorbell rang. Having finally put the pig brains behind him, Mu Five had returned to his original imposing, tough-guy self. He quickly strode to the door without sacrificing even a bit of his usual handsomeness, then saw Lu Yuan’s face on the video screen.
Mu Five paused. His beastly instincts told him that this big star and rising star of the pharmaceutical industry had arrived at a very bad time. And for some reason, he also had the distinct feeling that this guy had timed his arrival deliberately.
Even though Mu Five privately didn’t want to let Lu Yuan in, everyone had already heard the doorbell. Pretending they hadn’t heard it was obviously impossible. Mu Five could only settle for second best and turned toward the people in the living room who were all looking at him. “Boss, it’s Lu Yuan.”
Only then did Mu Yanxiao remember that, in order to help Lu Yuan deal with his predicament, he had told him earlier that day to come over and play blindfold chess with him. In reality, Young Master Mu had absolutely no interest in playing blindfold chess with Lu Yuan. He had only mentioned it in passing to give Lu Yuan an excuse to refuse Zheng Yuhu. Anyone with even a little sense would understand that, not just Mu Yanxiao.
Unfortunately, Lu Yuan seemed determined to pretend he didn’t understand. Moreover, they had said evening , yet this man had arrived at six o’clock. His intentions were so obvious that there was simply nothing to say.
Before Mu Yanxiao could even speak, Young Master Lin You tilted his head and let out a cold snort. Flapping his wings, he flew toward the living room. As he flew, he shouted, “ Sima Zhao’s intentions are known to all! This lord doesn’t feel like eating tonight! Nobody is allowed in this lord’s room!”
With a bang, the living room door slammed shut. The five men, including Mu One, looked at their boss with somewhat complicated expressions. Mu Yanxiao’s face was pitch-black. One glance was enough to tell that he was in a terrible mood.
When Lu Yuan was finally let inside, he came face-to-face with Mu Yanxiao’s dark expression. All the remarks and opening lines he had prepared beforehand were instantly swallowed back down the moment he saw Mu Yanxiao. After a long pause, all he could manage was a dry, “Uh… What happened, Brother Mu? Are you in a bad mood?”
Mu Yanxiao glanced toward the direction of Lu Yuan’s voice, as though he had actually looked at him. Then, without showing the slightest courtesy, he said, “Your timing isn’t very good.”
Lu Yuan froze.
If this had been an ordinary person, they probably would have immediately felt hurt, turned red-eyed, and announced that they were leaving. But Lu Yuan’s eyes flickered. Although his face did indeed show a trace of hurt, he firmly showed no intention of leaving.
“Brother Mu, don’t be angry. I know you’re in a bad mood, so it’s easy to take it out on others. But I came here in the first place to play chess with you. We don’t have to play chess now. We can just talk. If something is bothering you, you can tell me about it. Although I’m not a professional psychologist, I’ve studied psychology before. I can’t guarantee anything else, but I can definitely help you feel a little better.”
With Lu Yuan having put it that way, even Mu Yanxiao couldn’t very well send him away. After all, Lu Yuan’s attitude was good, and he claimed to have come for Mu Yanxiao’s sake.
So Mu Yanxiao casually said, “I ran into a car accident on the way back.”
Lu Yuan’s expression changed, and he asked anxiously, “A car accident? Are you alright? Were you injured?”
Mu Yanxiao shook his head. “I’m fine. It was thanks to Linlin. He noticed something was wrong.”
“It was Linlin?” A dark glint flashed through Lu Yuan’s eyes. Then, as though he had finally relaxed, he said, “It’s really fortunate that you have such a clever parrot like Linlin by your side.”
