Chapter 34: Heroic Linlin
As the saying goes, opportunity knocks but once!
When two men who clearly weren’t friendly-looking were standing guard at the door of VIP Ward Number One, it was impossible for a rat—well, even a cute guinea pig—to enter the room of their boss, who was currently in an extremely foul mood.
Lin You figured that if he tried to force his way in with some backbone…
Well, he might end up having to find another dying creature to possess tonight.
For some reason, Lin You suddenly wondered: if he possessed a mosquito, how would he use that frail little body to call out to and comfort his boss? He’d get slapped into oblivion with a single swat. Tsk tsk, just thinking about it made him feel like he was courting death.
Come to think of it, being able to possess a guinea pig was actually something to be grateful for?
Lin You wiped his face with his short little paws and gave two dry chuckles. The nurse was getting closer and closer with the cart. Lin You immediately braced himself.
The cart had three tiers. Since it was more than ten times his height, he couldn’t see what was on the first tier. But he didn’t care in the slightest. He only needed to know what was on the third tier. Thank goodness, it only had a sheet of white cloth and some miscellaneous little things, such as rolls of gauze and medical tape. Most importantly, the third tier wasn’t too high. If he jumped onto it, he shouldn’t fall apart, and the noise shouldn’t be too loud either.
Lin You silently tensed his short hind legs, somewhat worried about whether he could make it in one go. But for the sake of seeing his blind master, he was going all out!
The cart was only ten centimeters away from Lin You. He lowered his round body slightly, preparing to jump. Nine centimeters, eight centimeters…
“Xiao Li!”
Just then, another nurse’s voice suddenly rang out, and the nurse named Xiao Li stopped in her tracks. Now!! He pushed off with his hind legs and stretched out his front paws! Lin You desperately tried to make his body as streamlined as possible so he could jump farther… well, although no matter how he looked at it, he was still a ball.
Thump!
A muffled sound rang out. Lin You ignored the pain and quickly buried himself in a pile of miscellaneous items.
“Huh?”
“Xiao Li? What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. I just thought I heard something.” Xiao Li shook her head, then raised an eyebrow at Liu Mei, who had come over. “What do you want? Don’t tell me you’re trying to take my place again and examine Young Master Mu?”
Liu Mei blushed at her words, but still gritted her teeth and said, “Xiao Li, I… I need this opportunity! Even if I can just show my face in front of Young Master Mu, that would be enough!”
Xiao Li rolled her eyes. “I advise you to stop daydreaming. What kind of status does Young Master Mu have, and what kind of status do you have? Forget you. Even Director Zhang’s daughter came, and wasn’t she still kicked out by Young Master Mu?”
But no matter what Xiao Li said, Liu Mei refused to leave. Finally, Xiao Li got angry. “Move! This is my job! If you delay Young Master Mu’s examination, you can’t afford the consequences! Don’t force me to tell Dean Ouyang!”
Liu Mei’s eyes reddened, and she opened her mouth to say something, when another gentle voice rang out. “What’s going on?”
Xiao Li immediately straightened up at the sound of the voice. “Dr. Lu, what brings you here?”
Lu Yuan stood there dressed in white, his handsome appearance paired with his gentle smile making him quite captivating. “I heard Brother Mu had an accident, so I came to take a look. I happen to want to take some time off recently, so I came to the hospital to ask if I could take care of him.”
“What happened? Isn’t it time to give Brother Mu his check-up?”
Xiao Li glared fiercely at Liu Mei, who still looked aggrieved. “I understand. I’ll go right away!”
Lu Yuan shook his head with a smile. “Forget it. Let me do it. You two can go see Dean Ouyang and tell him what happened today. After all, it’s best to minimize any delays to the patient.”
Xiao Li looked resentful at his words, while Liu Mei turned pale. However, Lu Yuan, who was in an excellent mood, didn’t pay them any more attention. He naturally took over the cart carrying Lin You and leisurely pushed it toward the VIP ward.
“Dr. Lu? What brings you here?” The two guards at the door spoke with some surprise, while Mu Two and Mu Five, who were keeping watch by the chairs nearby, also looked up at Lu Yuan.
Lu Yuan remained perfectly calm and smiled. “I was worried that the others wouldn’t take good care of him. After all, I graduated in pharmacology and have studied nursing as well. It would be better if I took care of Brother Mu myself.”
Hearing this, the two guards looked slightly moved. Even Mu Two and Mu Five, who had a rather low opinion of him, were somewhat surprised. However, compared to Mu Five’s happiness, Mu Two merely pushed up his gold-rimmed glasses and remembered something Linlin had once said:
“Sima Zhao’s intentions are known to all!”
Anyone who had interacted with the young master of the Lu Family could guess a thing or two about his feelings for their boss. Even so, Mu Two had no reason to stop Lu Yuan right now. After all, Lu Yuan’s reason was perfectly valid, and he was supposedly doing it for their boss. It was truly frustrating.
“Since that’s the case, Young Master Lu, go ahead. But the boss is in a bad mood right now, so I hope you won’t say anything that might upset him.”
Lu Yuan and Mu Two looked at each other for a moment before Lu Yuan looked away. “Don’t worry, Mr. Two. I’ll just give Brother Mu a check-up and inject some glucose. If Brother Mu doesn’t want to talk to me, I’ll leave immediately.”
At this point, Mu Two had no other reason to stop Lu Yuan and could only gesture for the guards to move aside. Lu Yuan pushed the cart into the ward, a smug grin on his face. Meanwhile, Lin You, the guinea pig who had overheard the entire conversation from the cart, was furiously gnawing on a roll of gauze, his little black eyes blazing with fury.
Fuck! This guy really is persistent! He’s courting death! How could he be so despicable and shameless as to take advantage of his blind master’s vulnerable state?! This is absolutely intolerable!! And injecting glucose?! Did he think Young Master Lin couldn’t smell that tiny bottle of mild hallucinogen in his pocket?!
Don’t think that just because Young Master Lin is a guinea pig now, he can’t do anything to you! I’ll bite you to death later!!
Snap.
Lin You, the guinea pig, discovered that he’d chewed all the way through a roll of gauze. He calmly kicked the scraps of gauze aside. Hmm, gauze wasn’t very good for sharpening his teeth. He’d use peanuts next time.
The moment Lu Yuan entered the room, Mu Yanxiao had already raised his head. His bright but slightly hollow eyes were fixed in Lu Yuan’s direction.
“Lu Yuan?” Mu Yanxiao’s voice was slightly hoarse.
Lu Yuan’s eyes widened in disbelief when he saw Mu Yanxiao.
Mu Yanxiao was surrounded by a gloomy aura, his expression weary and listless. Although there was still a faint trace of ferocity emanating from him, the Mu Yanxiao before him was completely different from the one Lu Yuan had seen three days ago. It was the difference between heaven and hell.
Yet when Lu Yuan saw Mu Yanxiao like this, an overwhelming sense of delight suddenly surged through him. This was the Mu Yanxiao he wanted, the perfect state to take advantage of! He hadn’t seen him like this when Mu Yanxiao was blind. Who would have thought he’d see it after a parrot died?!
Lu Yuan found it somewhat ridiculous, yet also felt a lingering sense of fear. Fortunately, they had dealt with that parrot as soon as possible. Although the price had been quite heavy, half of the Zheng and Chen Families’ legitimate businesses had been taken away. But as long as Mu Yanxiao continued like this, he simply wouldn’t be able to contend with Zheng Yuhu and the other two working together!
Just thinking about how someone so high above him would soon belong to him made Lu Yuan tremble with excitement.
“Brother Mu, I’m here to give you a check-up. Also, your mental and physical condition isn’t good. I need to give you some glucose so you don’t collapse.”
Lu Yuan wisely avoided mentioning Lin You the parrot, and he didn’t say anything unnecessary. The psychology he’d studied told him that Mu Yanxiao’s mental state was only teetering on the brink of collapse and hadn’t completely deteriorated yet. At this point, he absolutely couldn’t stimulate or comfort him, because either would provoke intense resentment. As long as he came every day as usual, after enough visits, Mu Yanxiao would naturally start talking to him, the only outsider around him.
And in fact, Lu Yuan’s behavior did make Mu Yanxiao feel more at ease. He didn’t want anyone mentioning Linlin in front of him anymore. Since Lu Yuan didn’t say anything, he didn’t have to think about it.
Mu Yanxiao nodded at Lu Yuan without saying anything, simply letting him conduct the examination in silence. Everything seemed to be going smoothly. Lu Yuan’s excitement grew stronger and stronger.
At the same time, Lin You had already climbed down from the cart and quickly made his way to the foot of the hospital bed. Using the long bedsheet, he silently began climbing upward.
As he climbed, Lin You felt absolutely miserable. He wasn’t a parrot anymore, so he couldn’t speak. There was no way to tell his blind, stupid master that Lu Yuan was about to inject him with a hallucinogen. That stuff was a huge hazard. Not only was it addictive, but after being injected, a person’s mental defenses would drop drastically. At that point, if Lu Yuan whispered something into Mu Yanxiao’s ear, it would become a subconscious memory.
Damn it! The more he thought about it, the angrier he got!!
After much difficulty, Lin You finally climbed onto the bed and hid beneath the pillow Mu Yanxiao had propped up behind him. At a glance, he saw Lu Yuan, his eyes gleaming with an obscene light, holding a syringe and preparing to inject Mu Yanxiao.
Just as the sharp needle was about to pierce Mu Yanxiao’s arm, Lin You suddenly charged forward with a loud squeal!
“Squeak! Squeak squeak squeak!!”
Both Lu Yuan and Mu Yanxiao froze.
Then Lu Yuan saw a white guinea pig with brown spots pounce at him and sink his teeth viciously into his arm!
“Ah—!”
Lu Yuan cried out in pain. He stared at the guinea pig that had appeared out of nowhere, his eyes filled with surprise and uncertainty. Was it just his imagination?! Why did that look seem so familiar?!
It was just like… just like the look that dead parrot had given him?!
Lu Yuan suddenly shuddered. Then, gritting his teeth, he flung the guinea pig, which was still clinging tightly to his arm, away. “Where did this damned beast come from?!”
Bang!
Lin You was hurled heavily against the wall before falling to the floor. At that moment, he felt as though every bone in his body had broken. He was in so much pain that he couldn’t even whimper.
“Lu Yuan.”
Mu Yanxiao’s expression turned cold. “What did you just say?” Right now, he couldn’t stand hearing the words “damned” or “beast,” yet Lu Yuan had just said both in one breath.
Besides that, although Mu Yanxiao couldn’t see what had just happened, he could roughly deduce sixty to seventy percent of it from his senses, the sounds, and Lu Yuan’s words.
Lu Yuan paused at Mu Yanxiao’s words, somewhat regretting what he’d blurted out in his panic. “Brother Mu… I don’t know where this rat came from. It suddenly pounced on me and bit me. I’m bleeding.”
Mu Yanxiao instinctively frowned when he heard the word “rat.” Before Lu Yuan could even feel pleased by his reaction, he heard Mu Yanxiao call out to Mu Two and Mu Five. “Mu Two! Mu Five!”
Within three seconds, Mu Two and Mu Five entered the room.
“Boss?”
“Dr. Lu was bitten by a rat. Mu Two, take Dr. Lu to get it checked out and see if there’s any risk of infection. Mu Five, stay here and find that rat and deal with it.”
Lu Yuan was dumbfounded. He hadn’t injected the hallucinogen yet!
“Brother Mu, you haven’t had the glucose injection yet. How about I—”
Mu Two interrupted him before he could finish. “Dr. Lu, you’re already injured. Your intentions are good, but we don’t know whether that rat has the plague. You should get your wound checked first. As for the boss, he’s already had his examination. At worst, I can give him the glucose injection myself.”
Lu Yuan was still unwilling to give up and wanted to say something, but Mu Two forcefully ushered him out.
Damn beast! Lu Yuan lowered his head, his eyes filled with sinister anger. He was furious. That thing had ruined his plans!
After Mu Two and Lu Yuan left, Mu Yanxiao continued sitting on the bed like a block of wood. Mu Five, meanwhile, scratched his head and looked around the ward, finally spotting Lin You lying on the floor and trembling.
“Huh…” Mu Five looked down at the round, fairly clean guinea pig in front of him and frowned. “Boss… this isn’t a rat. It’s a guinea pig.”
Mu Yanxiao’s brow twitched slightly. “Aren’t they both rats?”
Mu Five’s lips twitched as he stared speechlessly at his boss, who had never paid attention to any pets other than parrots. “Guinea pigs are also called cavies. They’re different from rats. They’re one of the more common pets. They’re round, small, and, well, cute… And they generally don’t carry the plague. They’re very clean.”
Mu Yanxiao opened his eyes.
Lu Yuan had told him it was a rat. Mu Five had told him it was a pet rodent.
Although they were both rodents, the difference between them was far too great. And… when had this pet rodent rushed out and bitten Lu Yuan? Why would a pet rodent inexplicably appear in the ward? And why hadn’t the people guarding the door noticed it? This was the top floor. It was practically impossible for it to have climbed up here.
For some reason, Mu Yanxiao thought of a possibility. And because of that possibility, his breathing suddenly quickened.
“Quick! Bring that guinea pig over! Hurry!!”
Linlin particularly hated Lu Yuan. Everyone in the Mu Family knew that. And just now, this guinea pig had rushed out when Lu Yuan was about to inject him with glucose! So… could he really have such an absurd yet incredibly beautiful idea?! Linlin wasn’t an ordinary parrot, after all. If he was a parrot spirit, was it possible that he hadn’t actually died?!
Even if only his soul had possessed another animal’s body, that would still be the most wonderful thing!!
Mu Five looked at his suddenly excited boss with some uncertainty. The boss clearly hated rats before, right? And now he was actually asking him to bring one over? Hmm, though this guinea pig really was quite cute… Mu Five bent down and picked Lin You up, then his brows suddenly furrowed.
“Boss, this guinea pig must have been thrown against the wall by Dr. Lu just now. His condition… isn’t good.”
Mu Yanxiao’s eyes suddenly widened. His breath caught in his throat.
