Chapter 39: Unexpected Surprise
Lin You, the little lynx, was currently lounging comfortably on his blind master’s lap in a rather comfortable pose that also made it clear just how awesome he was.
Well, aside from occasionally bumping into that soft, squishy thing, everything seemed pretty much perfect.
Across from him and Mu Yanxiao, the bullied Garfield was curled up in his old master’s arms, his fur a complete mess and his expression one of deep resentment. If he hadn’t realized that he simply couldn’t beat the bully who was a little bigger than him, Garfield Meow Lord swore he would have beaten that guy until his face blossomed like a peach!
The pets were in completely different moods, and their owners, Young Master Mu and Grandpa Albert, were feeling rather conflicted as well.
After staring at Lin You the lynx for a long while, Albert finally couldn’t help but speak with a pained expression. “Oh, Mu, how could you keep a lynx? You know, we were just talking about that adorable parrot. You even turned down the benefits offered to you because of him. But now, Mu, have you become fickle?”
Mu Yanxiao’s lips twitched at Albert’s words, and his expression darkened.
Although he already knew, and could be certain, that the lynx curled up in his arms was the same parrot that had accompanied him before, every time he remembered how he had felt when Linlin died, his heart still ached terribly. That feeling had been earth-shattering. He didn’t want to experience it a second time.
Besides, something this fantastical couldn’t exactly be said casually. Mu Yanxiao felt that even if he told Albert about it, Albert would only think he had lost his mind and wouldn’t believe that this lynx, Linlin, was the same Linlin who had once been a parrot. So Young Master Mu chose a more easily acceptable explanation.
“…Linlin returned to Heaven after protecting me.”
Albert immediately gasped, “Oh my god! Mu, why didn’t you tell me something this important sooner?!”
Mu Yanxiao gave a wry smile. “I’ve been in a daze over this for the past few days and could barely take care of myself. How would I have had time to tell you? As for this lynx, I consulted an Eastern mystic who divined that he was Linlin’s reincarnation. That’s why I specifically found him and decided to take good care of him.”
“Oh! How marvelous the East is! I’d heard before that Eastern Daoists and Celestial Masters were incredibly powerful, even capable of knowing the future! You went to such lengths for Linlin, Mu. Believe me, Linlin will be comforted by what you’ve done!”
Albert’s face was filled with emotion. Meanwhile, the two felines listening nearby twitched their whiskers, expressing their disdain for their respective owners’ intelligence.
“Meow.”
“I really can’t believe my old master actually believed such an obvious lie! Humans really are cunning!”
Garfield covered his round, plate-like face with a paw.
Across from him, Lin You let out an “Awoo.” Oh, you’re indignant? Go buy your master some Brain Gold to improve his brain! He actually believed such an obvious lie. I finally believe that even if my blind master is blind, he can still dominate the world.
“Meow! Meow meow meow meow!”
“You’re not allowed to mock my master’s intelligence!”
“Meow~ Awooo!!”
“I’m mocking him anyway! If you don’t like it, come fight me! I’ll beat you flat!”
Mu Yanxiao was still thinking about how to respond to Albert’s emotional declaration when he suddenly heard the increasingly loud and increasingly furious meows coming from inside the house. Just as he was about to raise an eyebrow and say something, his grip slipped, and the little lynx in his arms sprang down with surprising force. Then he heard the dull thud of two bodies rolling together, followed by Grandpa Albert’s panicked shout:
“Oh, oh! No, no, no! Garfield, don’t fight with Linlin! This lynx is your old friend Linlin! Look, they even have the same name! Don’t fight!”
Albert anxiously circled the two fighting cats. When Lin You finally pounced on Garfield and knocked him down again with an especially arrogant air, Albert sighed.
“Garfield, little darling, the point is that you can’t beat him. How can you be this silly?”
“Meow! Meow! Meow!!”
“You’re the silly one!! Your whole family is silly!! What good would it do you if I were silly, you idiot owner?! Just what was I fighting such a powerful enemy for?!”
“Meow.”
“Hehe.”
“Linlin? Alright, you’re not fully grown yet. Don’t keep fighting; it’s bad for your health.”
Mu Yanxiao stretched out both hands. Seeing this, Lin You curled his lip, shook himself off, and padded over to his master with light, graceful steps. Then he leaped up…
Onto Mu Yanxiao’s shoulder.
His short, stubby tail swayed happily, complementing the two little tufts of pointed fur on his ears.
“…Meow!”
“I’m not playing with you anymore! Friendship over! I’m never taking you to eat fish again! You’re bullying a cat too much.”
Lin You the lynx responded by twitching the tips of his ears. Tsk. The two tufts of fur on his ears looked especially like cowlicks. He had absolutely no idea what they were for. Sensing the wind and the scent of danger? Hehe.
Albert looked at Garfield, who was angrily sprawled on the floor and refusing to get up, and the corners of his mouth twitched. He hadn’t seen this shameless behavior in quite some time. Garfield only acted like this when he’d been bullied into a particularly furious state.
It seemed that pets named Linlin really weren’t ordinary. However, since his pet had been bullied, as his owner, he naturally had to stand up for him. So Albert picked up the chubby Garfield, who was shamelessly lying on the floor, patted his back comfortingly, and returned to the sofa. Then he turned to Mu Yanxiao.
“Hehe, Mu, I really do think this little lynx is the same big parrot from before. So far, those are the only two creatures I’ve ever seen that can put my Garfield in his place so thoroughly.”
Mu Yanxiao coughed lightly. “You’re too kind.”
Albert smiled and shook his head. “No, no, I’m not exaggerating. But if that’s the case, I don’t think my reason for coming here today will be in vain after all. The goal may be different, but I imagine there isn’t much difference otherwise.”
“What are you talking about?” Mu Yanxiao asked, puzzled.
Could it be that Albert hadn’t come here specifically to let his Garfield act silly?
Albert stroked Garfield’s soft fur.
“Robert, bring Garfield’s thing over.”
Robert, who had been standing behind Albert like a shadow, bent down at his words and placed one hand over his chest.
“Please wait a moment, sir.”
Mu Yanxiao was completely bewildered. “What thing?”
Lin You also tilted his head, causing the two tufts of fur on his ears to tilt along with it.
“Just a little surprise.” Albert smiled. “I think you’ll like it.”
Hearing this, Garfield immediately perked up. He meowed several times at Lin You, his expression so foolish and arrogantly smug that Lin You’s claws began to itch.
Then…
With his blind master’s boundless indulgence, Young Master Lin You actually turned around and began vigorously sharpening his claws against the sofa behind Mu Yanxiao. The sound made the veins on Mu Yanxiao’s forehead throb.
Even after turning into a fierce lynx, this guy hadn’t become any more dignified. He was still relentlessly acting like a lunatic! Thankfully, he couldn’t speak. Otherwise, wouldn’t Mu Yanxiao be driven to headaches every single day?! However, for the sake of necessary communication, perhaps he should get a phone with a small keyboard? Let his big cat communicate by pressing the keys with his paws?
With that thought, Young Master Mu reached out without hesitation and grabbed the short tail dangling beside his face, which was only about the length of his hand, then pulled it firmly into his arms.
“Meow—ow?!”
“Damn it! Who pulled my tail?! You don’t want to live anymore, meow?!”
“Linlin, the leather on the sofa you’re sharpening your claws on is worth a hundred thousand. What do you think about that?”
Also, with claws like yours, your owner really doesn’t trust you with a touchscreen phone or tablet, you know? Lin You the lynx, currently sharpening his claws, froze completely.
I’m not saying anything. I was just touching it. Who knew it would be so flimsy? Besides, when I was a parrot, I never had the habit of touching things like this. But for some reason, my claws feel itchy now!
“Meow~”
“Hahahaha!”
The Garfield cat opposite was unleashing his most malicious mockery. Lin You glanced at him indifferently, then decided not to bother with this cat who can’t speak. But just as Lin You turned his head, preparing to express his disdain, he suddenly heard a very strange sound. It was somewhat mechanical, but somehow had been given a little polish.
The content of that voice, accompanied by several meows, made Lin You whip his head around so quickly that he nearly twisted his delicate neck.
“Ahem! Ahahahaha! Lin, Lin? You idiot! You actually use the sofa as a scratching post! Even Meow Lord Garfield has his own special scratching post! Hahaha! Meow Lord can talk! Can you? Can you, meow?!”
A surprised Mu Yanxiao, “…”
A shocked Lin You, “…”
Grandpa Albert wore a smug smile.
“Hehe. Just a little toy. I don’t think most people would care much about my research achievement, but Mu, you’ll definitely like it, and you’ll definitely need it. What do you think? This is a pet language translator that cost me over a billion to develop. It can directly translate what a pet wants to express into human speech based on the frequency and fluctuations of its vocalizations.”
“What’s more, this little machine has quite a few language options. Right now, it can translate the most common pets, including cats, dogs, and birds. There are also more than a dozen voice and tone options, including cute loli and shota voices, domineering CEO voices, professional broadcaster voices, as well as charming and gentle tones. Hahaha, my Garfield uses a New Orleans accent. How is it? Doesn’t it sound great?”
By the time Albert finished, Mu Yanxiao’s initial admiration had turned into a series of ellipses.
Cute shota voices and domineering CEO voices…
Does your family know you’re still this childish at your age?
And when he thought about how this infuriatingly powerful device was about to fall into the hands of his lunatic little pet, a layer of worry inexplicably settled over Young Master Mu’s face. He could almost foresee the turbulent future ahead.
Without the language barrier holding him back, his big cat would definitely charge out of City A and conquer the world.
If he ever went abroad…
Compared with Mu Yanxiao’s mixed feelings of joy and worry, Lin You the lynx’s eyes were practically shining like searchlights in the middle of the night.
Oh my god, what had he just heard?!
A little machine that could let him speak!
And it even had voice-changing options for pranks!
Oh, meow~ Was there anything in this world more wonderful than this?!
“Of course, my Garfield’s vocal patterns and fluctuations are quite rich, so the sentences he produces are also relatively varied. That’s related to intelligence.”
Albert couldn’t resist bragging about his Garfield’s intelligence.
“If it’s an animal with less intelligence, its translated language might be rather monotonous.”
Young Master Mu remained expressionless, particularly wanting to say, Hehe. You’ll never know just how rich my Linlin’s language will be, or how terrifying the effect of every single sentence can be.
