Chapter 42: Surveillance Team
The rats near the Mu Family’s garden villa had been having a rather miserable time lately.
This area had originally been a prime location in the wealthy district. Although the rich people kept their houses spotless and were obsessively vigilant against rats, a wealthy district was still a wealthy district. Even if there was no food to be found inside the houses, the gardens outside the villas had all kinds of fruit trees, edible flowers and plants, and even small vegetable patches.
On top of that, the population density was relatively low, so the rats lived quite carefree lives. But that carefree existence came to an abrupt end one day when a small rat with round ears and white fur covered in coffee-colored spots arrived. Driven by some strange, inexplicable fear, they somehow surrendered a comfortable burrow and a small mountain of peanuts. Once they came to their senses, they were furious and decided to gang up on the ignorant little newcomer.
However, before they could act, an elderly yellow weasel who had lived exceptionally long and was highly respected by the rats and even the surrounding animals declared that anyone who didn’t want to die should stop seeking death. After all, even he had offered up a peanut. So the rats fell silent. If even Grandpa Yellow, who had lived for who knew how long, had offered a peanut, then that little rat was probably someone they really couldn’t afford to offend.
But just as the rats were reluctantly preparing to give up their comfortable burrow and peanuts, they discovered that the little rat was anything but peaceful. It had actually headed straight for a human’s car. And then… when it came back, the little rat was being personally fed by the owner of the Mu Family.
Not only the rats, but all the animals in this prime location agreed that this little rat was truly something else. Look, he had only been gone for a day, and the humans were already carrying him around and feeding him every day. He didn’t even care about peanuts anymore!
The rats even gathered together to discuss the importance of appearance.
Hehe.
The rats had originally thought that life would continue peacefully and uneventfully like this. But three days later, the rats discovered that the miraculous little rat had died. Almost at the same time, a new, large cat appeared on the grounds of the Mu Family’s villa, looking exceptionally fierce.
When the younger rat told their leader that there was also a fat cat that had bitten the little rat to death, and that this large cat had given the fat cat a thorough beating, the rats were collectively baffled. Why would a cat avenge a rat? That really didn’t make any sense. So the rat leader went to visit Grandpa Yellow again.
Grandpa Yellow said that they absolutely had to build a good relationship with this large cat. He was even more powerful than that little rat and seemed to be a big shot.
Thus, the rats received their leader’s order: when necessary, they absolutely had to build a good relationship with their mortal enemy! A rather straightforward little rat voiced the thoughts of all the rats:
“Does building a good relationship mean offering yourself up for him to bite a few times?”
The rat leader rolled his eyes. “Think for yourself. I’m not human!”
Fortunately, just as the rats were struggling over how to build a good relationship with the cat, they collectively heard a meow that sent shivers down their spines.
“All you rats who don’t want to die, come out! This lord has something for you to do! Do it well and this lord will reward you! Do it badly and this lord will wipe out your entire nest!”
Thus, on this dark and windy night, the rats spread the word from one to ten and from ten to a hundred, gathering at a certain farmhouse at lightning speed after hearing Young Master Lin You’s summons.
The rat leader took the opportunity to turn around and look around, then angrily scratched the ground with his claws. The turnout was even better than when he usually called everyone together!
Mu Yanxiao heard Mu Five’s incessant gasping. Recalling that Mu Five seemed to have trypophobia or something similar, he quickly got goosebumps all over despite being unable to see anything.
At a time like this, the only thing that could trigger Mu Five’s trypophobia seemed to be some kind of animal that was particularly good at reproducing.
“Linlin, what exactly are you trying to do?” Mu Yanxiao couldn’t quite understand the significance of gathering all these rats. But very soon, he found out what his precious pet was up to.
“Ahem.” Lin You, the little lynx and underworld boss, spoke in his best underworld-boss voice. “I called everyone here today because your boss needs you to help with a little something. Go monitor what these two people are doing at home, what they’re saying, and what important things they’re hiding. Just for three days! Whoever brings back news that satisfies this lord will get a chicken butt to eat!”
“Squeak!!”
“Squeak squeak squeak!”
“Squeak squeak squeak squeak!”
The rat swarm immediately erupted into an uproar. The general meaning of their squeaks was: Do we get a chicken butt every day for three days?!
Lin You tilted his head. Then, under the knife-like gazes of Mu One through Mu Five, he used his soft little paws to scratch his ears. Huh, lynxes really are great. I can even scratch my own ears!
The important point was that after scratching his ears and thinking for a moment, just as he was about to speak, Boss Mu’s icy voice rang out:
“You’re planning to make me feed several hundred rats?”
Linlin the little lynx instantly realized that his blind master didn’t seem to like rats very much. Well, to be honest, he didn’t like them much either.
“Quiet, quiet! Considering how difficult this mission is, the old, weak, sick, and disabled aren’t allowed. Those who aren’t clever enough aren’t allowed. Those with poor memories aren’t allowed either! Finally, twenty brave warriors will be chosen for this mission. Once it’s done, your boss will reward you handsomely! One fried chicken leg every day! Additional rewards will be given separately!”
This time, after Lin You finished speaking, the rats below didn’t merely stir. They exploded into a frenzy of squeaking. After a competition that made even Mu Five and Mu Three’s scalps tingle, twenty strong, well-fed rats strutted out one after another. The rat leader was among them.
Looking at the twenty plump and sturdy rats, Lin You felt certain that this mission would be completed perfectly.
“Good! You twenty are the chosen ones. Starting tomorrow, you’ll go monitor those two old women!”
Then, the rat leader gave two squeaks with an air of professional competence.
Lin You instantly froze.
Mu Yanxiao raised an eyebrow. “Did you forget to ask me where my two aunts live?”
“Holy crap! Blind Master, you’re incredible! We’re so in sync we could practically fly side by side, hahaha!”
Mu Yanxiao, “…” Why did he suddenly have the feeling that he was looking at a crazy parrot?
Afterward, Mu Yanxiao told Lin You the addresses of his two aunts. Although he didn’t particularly believe that rats could be even more useful than surveillance cameras, well, treating it as an opportunity for his two aunts to have some close contact with rats was rather pleasant in its own way.
Of course, Lin You, who was on the same wavelength as the young master, naturally thought of this as well. When the other rats realized there wasn’t much incentive in the task, Cat King Lin You decisively announced that he could provide a bag of aged rice for everyone to share. All they had to do was leave footprints or other traces of their presence at those two places. If they could chew up something valuable and bring it back, they’d get a chicken butt!
And so, after all the rats enthusiastically dispersed, Mu Yanxiao and his five subordinates, standing in the cool night breeze, somehow knew for certain that the next three days for those two aunts would be very… exciting.
“Tsk… I suddenly feel like organized animals with leaders are terrifying.” Mu Three fiddled with the machine in his hands as he quietly sighed to Mu Five.
Mu Five nodded deeply. “And don’t you think our new ‘Linlin’ is more bizarre than the mysteriously appearing guinea pig and even crazier than Little Six the parrot?”
“Hey, I thought I was the only one who thought something was wrong!” Mu Four joined the discussion. “So you guys think ‘Linlin’ is especially mysterious too? Why is that?”
Suddenly, Mu One’s flat voice rang out.
“Guess?”
“Ah!” Mu Five abruptly took a step back, then cried out with a mournful expression, “Brother, don’t scare me! I hate ghosts!”
“…You three idiots, come back inside with me!” Mu Two pushed up his glasses and dragged Three, Four, and Five away before Boss Mu could settle his score. Only after they had gone somewhere Boss Mu couldn’t hear them did he lower his voice and say, “Idiots! Linlin is a parrot spirit! He won’t die that easily! Understand?!”
In an instant, Three, Four, and Five all understood!
Mu Five even looked particularly naive and admiring. “Wow! Little Six is so mighty! But it’s really great that Little Six didn’t die!”
Mu Four nodded. “Yeah, it really is great. But what do we do? The car accident I arranged should have already sent Chen Yuhe to the hospital. As for Zheng Yuhu, he probably won’t be seriously injured, but he’ll at least have some minor injuries.”
Mu Three snorted. “So what? They deserved it anyway. Luckily, Little Six is a parrot spirit. Otherwise, wouldn’t Little Six have died a tragic death? And when all is said and done, they really did kill Little Six’s true form! Anyone who killed Little Six deserves to be punished in the name of justice!!”
The other three nodded in agreement.
Then even the Heavenly Dao nodded in agreement.
Yeah, your boss was the one who killed Linlin first. Although it was fate, and Mu Yanxiao was also a victim, as punishment for justice, your boss can spend the rest of his life dealing with that crazy pharmacist. Hehe.
10 PM.
Mu Yanxiao twitched his lips as he carried the big cat, who had been happily sharpening his claws on the leather sofa, onto the bed. Just as the little lynx was about to use the bedsheet to sharpen his claws, he casually said, “Scratch it again and I’ll chop off your claws.”
Lin You the lynx, “…” Fine. Although he knew it was only a threat, he understood the warning.
“Linlin.”
“What?”
“Linlin.”
“Tsk, what?”
“Linlin.”
“Do you believe this lord will scratch your face if you call me one more time?!”
Mu Yanxiao chuckled softly and reached out to stroke the lynx’s smooth, glossy fur. “You’re really back.”
Lin You couldn’t help rolling his eyes. “Obviously. Go to sleep. Tomorrow, this lord is going to personally see what those two aunties are up to. You should know, this lord can command more than just a horde of rats! Things that fly, things that swim, things that run on the ground! As long as they’ve got a bit of brains, this lord can trick them into helping!”
As he spoke, Lin You the little lynx raised his chin. Wow, why do I suddenly feel so incredibly impressive? Just thinking about it is so exciting!
Hearing the particularly smug tone of his big cat, Mu Yanxiao’s lips twitched. He immediately pulled the big cat into his arms and said, “Go to sleep. Dreams are supposed to feel more real when you’re asleep at night.”
Lin You the little lynx initially wanted to snuggle into the warm embrace, but then he suddenly bristled.
“Meow, meow, meow!!”
“Damn it! Are you saying this lord is daydreaming?! Believe it or not, tomorrow this lord will dominate the entire area within ten kilometers of the garden villa! I’ll even collect a hundred obedient underlings who’ll offer tribute to me!”
……
At this moment, Zhang Ya and Zhang Shan, the two aunts who had left the Mu Family in triumph that afternoon, were in A City’s VIP Hospital, their faces extremely grim as they looked at their sons, who had both been involved in “car accidents” at almost the same time.
“Mom! Mu Yanxiao has gone too far! He actually tried to run me and Cousin over! No matter what, we have to teach him a lesson! I won’t be satisfied until he’s completely ruined!” Chen Yuhe’s face was twisted with rage as he gritted his teeth.
“Don’t worry, Yuhe. We absolutely won’t show mercy to someone as heartless as him!” Zhang Ya said bitterly. She had originally wanted to leave Mu Yanxiao some assets so he could survive, but now it seemed she had been far too soft-hearted. For someone like Mu Yanxiao, who could kill people without a second thought, it was better for him to have nothing at all.
On the other side, Zhang Shan stood beside Zheng Yuhu. Their gazes met briefly before quickly separating, both faces filled with anger and resentment.
