Chapter 53: Paying Homage to the Great Immortal Lin
Although the Mu Family’s Second Young Master sounded like he was screaming bloody murder, Mu One did not rush frantically into the room to rescue him. After all, while the screams sounded rather miserable, they had not yet reached the point of being truly heart-wrenching. In other words, the Second Young Master was under considerable psychological pressure, but otherwise, there was really nothing wrong with him.
Meanwhile, inside the villa, Mu Ten and Mu Nine were standing outside the bathroom, watching the Second Young Master, wrapped in nothing but a towel, jumping up and down and spouting all kinds of nonsense. For a moment, neither of them knew what to do.
Clearly, aside from the two of them, the only other creature in the room was a big cat that looked about as frightening as a fluffy pillow. Yet the expression on the Second Young Master’s face made it seem as though he were looking at the dead, or rather, the dead who had come back to life.
“Second Young Master, you need to calm down! What happened to you? Should we call a doctor?” Mu Nine couldn’t help stepping forward to ask, only to be violently fended off by Mu Yanming, who was flailing his arms wildly.
“Spirit! Evil ghost! Don’t come near me!! I was there, but I absolutely had nothing to do with it!! Even if you’re dead, you shouldn’t come after me! I wanted to call the police, but there were too many of them, and you and I aren’t even related. I couldn’t possibly offend all of them just for your sake!”
Hearing this, Mu Nine, Mu Ten, and Young Master Lin You all raised their eyebrows. Mu Nine and Mu Ten, in particular, instantly became serious. No matter how they listened to those words, they sounded like the recounting of some very unpleasant incident. It might even have been a murder.
Mu Nine thought for a moment before cautiously turning to Cat King Lin You. “What exactly did you do to the Second Young Master? His mental state is extremely unstable right now. If you just wanted to teach him a lesson, you’ve already accomplished your goal. You should stop now! After all, you’re only an animal. If something really happens to the Second Young Master, you’ll be in serious trouble.”
Upon hearing this, Lin You turned around and gave Mu Nine a particularly dashing view of his back.
Mu Nine’s brows furrowed deeply. He was just about to say something more when his body suddenly went rigid. A few seconds later, he reflexively straightened up and called out to the approaching figure, “Brother!!”
“Brother!” Mu Ten also quickly turned around to greet him.
Mu One nodded at his two younger brothers. Then, to their bewilderment, he crouched down and forced his usually wooden face into the faintest hint of a smile as he addressed the proud big cat. “Linlin, the Boss sent me over to pass a message to you.”
Lin You’s ears, complete with their little tufts of fur, twitched at this. He fixed his amber eyes directly on Mu One.
“Ahem. The Boss also thinks the Second Young Master deserves a good bit of disciplining. But since he’s the Boss’s own younger brother, the Boss says that no matter what, you have to leave him alive so the Mu Family can continue its family line.”
Lin You straightened abruptly at those words. He tilted his head and thought for a while before finally nodding in agreement. Considering that he and Mu Yanxiao might end up spending the rest of their lives together, there was a very good chance that the Mu Family’s eldest son would remain childless. For the sake of the Mu Family’s future generations, Mu Yanming’s life really ought to be spared.
Ah! Actually, when all was said and done, he had never intended to take Mu Yanming’s life. Really. He had only planned to give him a good scare.
At this moment, Mu Yanming was still howling like a ghost. Lin You waved his little paw at the Mu Family’s numbered men. “All of you, get out and wait for me outside.”
Mu Nine and Mu Ten hesitated, looking as though they wanted to say something, but before either of them could open his mouth, Mu One grabbed both of them by the neck and hauled them straight out of the room. At last, only Cat King Lin You and the Mu Family’s Second Young Master remained in the room.
The Second Young Master was still wailing when Lin You dragged another bundle out of the package beneath the window. Without wasting any time, he scattered its contents over Mu Yanming’s legs. Well, he had actually intended to dump the whole thing directly over his head, but the difference in their heights was a little too great, so he could only settle for his legs.
About a minute later, Mu Yanming finally stopped howling. Yet even after regaining consciousness, the terror on his face and in his eyes had barely diminished. Mu Yanming could hardly believe his own memories. Just a minute ago, he had been wrapped in nothing but a towel, flailing wildly and howling nonstop?! How could he possibly have done something so humiliating?! That had definitely been an illusion, or perhaps there had been something wrong with his memory?!
But the big cat across from him served as a painful reminder that what had just happened was indeed a terrible reality. And there was a very good chance that such bizarre events had something to do with this big cat!!
“W-what exactly are you?!” Mu Yanming’s voice trembled. What had just happened made him realize that there was something seriously wrong with this cat. As soon as he thought of this, a fierce look appeared on his face. “What are you plotting by staying at my brother’s side?! My brother clearly thinks very highly of you. He treats you like you’re the most important thing in the world. If you’re planning to do anything to harm him, then I’ll fight you to the death! I’ll kill you even if I have to give up everything I have!!”
Hearing those words, Young Master Lin You tilted his head in surprise. He had always thought Mu Yanming was nothing more than a useless lump of mud that could never amount to anything. But now it seemed that he was at least a lump of mud with some humanity left in him.
Hmm. There was finally some hope of reforming him.
“Speak up! What exactly did you come here for? What kind of spirit are you?! I knew it! Even with that robot, a cat still shouldn’t be able to talk!! The way you think and the way you speak are exactly like a human’s. You’re far too strange for a cat!!” Mu Yanming’s calves trembled, but he still forced himself to put on a threatening front.
Young Master Lin You with decidedly ill intentions, suddenly bared a dozen or so sharp fangs at Mu Yanming. Then, with an agile leap, he landed on the sofa and spoke leisurely. “Since you’ve already realized that the Great Immortal is no ordinary being, there’s no need for me to hide anything anymore. Besides, even if I told you my true identity, with your talent for accomplishing nothing and ruining everything, along with your uselessness that can’t be salvaged, there’s absolutely no way you could do anything to me.”
Mu Yanming was furious, yet he was also extremely frustrated to discover that he really had no way of dealing with the big cat in front of him. He could only grit his teeth and say, “You don’t look anything like an immortal! You’re more like a spirit! What exactly are you here for? If you need money or a constant supply of food, just tell me and I’ll do everything I can to satisfy you! But you absolutely cannot do anything to my brother!!”
Lin You, the spirit, raised an eyebrow. “Such as?”
“For example… for example, sucking… sucking my brother’s vital essence or yang energy or something?” Mu Yanming stammered so badly that his face turned red by the end.
Lin You rolled his eyes hard. Seriously, what was with kids these days? How did their imaginations get so wild?
“Hehe. You don’t want me to drain your brother’s yang energy?”
Mu Yanming nodded with an extremely solemn expression.
“Fine! I came here both to repay a debt of gratitude and to seek revenge, after all. If you listen to me, then I’ll only repay my debt to your brother and won’t seek revenge.” Lin You lied without even blinking. Given the Second Young Master’s wild imagination, he was sure the guy would believe anything he said anyway.
Sure enough, after hearing what the big cat Lin You said, Mu Yanming relaxed instead. As long as the big cat in front of him admitted to being a spirit, everything else was much easier to accept. Still, according to his understanding, didn’t the spirit of legend seek out humans either to repay a debt of gratitude or to exact revenge? Why was this particular spirit seeking out his brother to do both?
“Oh? Judging by that puzzled little look on your face, you’re probably wondering why the Great Immortal is seeking out your brother to both repay a debt of gratitude and exact revenge, aren’t you?” Lin You glanced at Mu Yanming’s conflicted expression and spoke with an air of complete composure.
Mu Yanming was startled that his thoughts had been seen through and instinctively took a step back. But the way he looked at the Cat Immortal made it clear that he genuinely wanted to know the reason.
“Tch, what’s so difficult to understand?” Immortal Lin flicked his short tail. “Back then, I was caught by hunters in the Qinling Mountains. They were going to kill me and sell me, but your brother happened to see me and rescued me. That’s the debt of gratitude. But after rescuing me, he went hunting and killed my Big Uncle’s entire family. That’s the grudge. So, do you understand now?”
Mu Yanming nodded gloomily, feeling rather exasperated. How had his brother managed to save this cat spirit and then kill his relatives all by coincidence? If only he had just saved him! Things would have been so much simpler!
“Um… if I listen to you, you’ll really stop seeking revenge on my brother and only repay your debt of gratitude?” The Mu Family’s Second Young Master couldn’t help confirming it one more time, and Lin You gave him an affirmative answer. Mu Yanming stood there, wrestling with his thoughts for a very long time before finally plopping down onto the floor and resignedly saying, “Fine! From now on, whatever you tell me to do, I’ll do it. Just don’t hurt my brother or my grandfather.”
Lin You, the Great Cat Immortal, scratched the genuine leather sofa with one paw. “They say human credibility is always negative. Even though you’ve made quite a good promise and put on such a righteous front, to make sure my grudge doesn’t go to waste, I still need to show you a few things.”
For some reason, Mu Yanming shuddered deeply at those words. He had a feeling that something very bad was about to happen.
“Go get that package under the window. Be careful and handle it gently. Those things are worth a fortune~”
Mu Yanming walked stiffly over to the window, bent down, and carried the package back.
“Put the package on the table. You see those little bottles in different colors inside? Put one drop from each bottle onto the table in order according to their colors. Let’s see what happens, meow~”
Mu Yanming glanced at the cat spirit sitting on the opposite sofa, who seemed to be in an especially good mood. In the end, with trembling hands, he carefully dripped the contents of the differently colored bottles onto the marble table in order.
Hiss! Bang!! Crack!…
Every time Mu Yanming dropped a bit of liquid from one of the little bottles, the marble table let out a terrifying cry of agony. Although it was nothing like a human cry, with all its complicated emotions, it was still frightening enough to make anyone who heard it tremble.
Second Young Master Mu was remarkably brave and did not tremble. He simply seemed to have lost control of his hand. It looked like he couldn’t move it anymore.
“Tsk, tsk. Don’t be so scared~ Didn’t I already say I’m here to repay a debt of gratitude? Why would I use these things against you? Come on, hurry up and put these high-risk items away! Oh, and one more thing. Don’t touch those little paper packets in different colors either. If the things just now were physical attacks, then those little packets, hehe… Well, just think back to what happened to you a moment ago. You understand, right~”
Mu Yanming nearly threw the package in his hands straight onto the floor! Holy crap! Who could tell him why such powerful biochemical weapons had been made by a cat spirit?! And more importantly, if he didn’t listen to this cat spirit, all these bizarre, terrifying things would end up being used on him!!
There was simply nothing more miserable in life than being threatened by a cat spirit.
So, when Mu One, Mu Nine, and Mu Ten returned to the room after being summoned by the Second Young Master, they saw the usually fearless Second Young Master, who acted as though he were the boss of everyone except the Young Master, sitting obediently beside Cat King Lin You like a steamed bun. Every so often, he even asked after Lin You’s well-being, behaving so obediently that they couldn’t help wondering whether this was really the Second Young Master.
“…Second Young Master?” Mu Nine couldn’t help speaking up to confirm.
Mu Yanming was incredibly docile in front of the Great Immortal Lin because of the combination of threats and inducements, but that didn’t mean he would behave this way in front of everyone. Naturally, Mu Nine became the target of the Second Young Master’s frustration over what had just happened. “What? What’s with that expression? Is there something wrong with the way I look? Hurry up and wipe that stupid look off your face!”
Mu Nine, “…” Good grief, Second Young Master. Could you try any harder to get yourself beaten?! And to think I actually felt a little sorry for you just now!
“Ahem, Second Young Master, didn’t you dislike seeing this cat?” Mu Ten tactfully gave Mu Nine a way out. Unfortunately, he was promptly blasted by Mu Yanming as well.
“What are you talking about? Linlin is so wise and mighty, cute and imposing, understanding and considerate. How could I possibly hate him? I wish I could stay by his side twenty-four hours a day. I’d even sleep while hugging him!”
Mu Ten, “…” Second Young Master, are you sure you haven’t been possessed by some strange thing? This sudden change in attitude is seriously bizarre. And, if I may remind you, if you really hugged him twenty-four hours a day, Young Master wouldn’t be happy about that…
But while Mu Nine and Mu Ten were baffled, Mu One, the leader of the Number Corps, remained remarkably calm. By now, Mu One had come to accept that when it came to anything involving Linlin, no matter how strange it was, it wasn’t actually strange at all. Even death couldn’t keep him in check, so what else in this world could possibly restrain him? And conversely, if he could even withstand the Grim Reaper, what was there that he couldn’t conquer?
The Second Young Master? Heh. Even Young Master had already been completely subdued by him, behaving like a model, twenty-four-filial-piety owner. The Second Young Master was nowhere near that level. And so, Great Immortal Lin You happily subdued the rebellious Second Young Master and gained himself a troublesome little underling. In the unprecedentedly harmonious atmosphere of the villa, they welcomed the return of the Mu Family’s Young Master.
“What are you all doing in here?” The moment Mu Yanxiao entered the room, he saw his younger brother holding his pet with an unusually respectful expression, while Mu One, Mu Nine, and Mu Ten stood obediently nearby, watching the two of them interact.
From where he stood, his usually unruly younger brother was being remarkably pleasant toward Linlin, who was waving his paws around as though giving him a lecture. There wasn’t the slightest trace of impatience on his face. Every now and then, he even nodded, looking particularly obedient.
Young Master Mu’s mouth twitched, and he took a step back.
…He must have opened the door the wrong way.
Or maybe he had walked into the wrong room.
