Chapter 60: Green Little Turtle

Dark purple lightning struck straight down. A bolt from a clear sky was always more shocking than one seen during a thunderstorm. At that moment, the people gathered in front of the parking lot at the main entrance of Intoxicating Nights watched in shock as the black lightning struck the man in the black trench coat. Almost everyone had the same thought: after being struck by lightning like that, the man would probably be seriously injured at the very least, if not killed.

Yet when the dark purple lightning finally disappeared, all the onlookers saw was the tall man in the black trench coat swaying a few times. He neither collapsed to the ground nor screamed in agony as they had expected.

One person couldn’t believe his eyes and shouted, “What the fuck! Did I just see that wrong? Such a huge bolt of lightning hit him, and he’s completely fine?! Then what was that thick black lightning even for? Was it just putting on a show?”

Quite a few people around him nodded in agreement. Among them, however, was a young man in an ordinary white shirt and black trousers. His features were handsome and his complexion slightly pale. Upon hearing those words, he gave a faint, cold laugh.

That wasn’t even an attack aimed at that man, so how could it possibly hurt him? Still, it looked like that cute little lynx spirit was doomed. The owner was quite something, though. Even at the risk of being injured himself, he refused to put the lynx down. At least he could leave his pet’s body intact, and perhaps even keep him alive for a little while longer.

Well, that had nothing much to do with him. He was only here to buy some food. He had heard that the food here was quite good, and the people at home had become increasingly picky about what they ate after being spoiled by him. Although he really didn’t want to keep running errands for them and feeding the whole family, he was unfortunately the weakest fighter among them, and he was also the only one who wasn’t particularly bothered by sunlight. Considering they had been family for so many years, well, he supposed it was better not to let them starve.

After thinking this over, the young man took a few steps toward Intoxicating Nights. But just then, someone brushed past him, making him stop abruptly.

He turned his head slightly and saw a middle-aged man dressed so extravagantly that he looked almost like a nouveau riche. Although the man had a rather amiable appearance, the hint of malice and resentment between his brows practically screamed, “ I am a bad guy.”

The man was clutching a small black crystal in his hand, his eyes fixed on the man who had just been struck by lightning with a fervent, almost fanatical look.

“…Oh dear. Is someone trying to capture a spirit? Tsk tsk. Should I help or not?”

The young man thought about it for a while before deciding that it was better to mind his own business. But just as he took another step forward, he suddenly heard the man in the black trench coat utter a name in a low, pained voice.

“Linlin.”

…Linlin? That name sounded vaguely familiar.

The young man lowered his head and thought for a moment before suddenly slapping his palm. “It’s that stinky Daoist’s nephew?”

His expression became somewhat conflicted. After thinking it over, he sighed. He and that stinky Daoist had each owed the other a favor before, which had evened things out. If he helped bring his little nephew back this time, perhaps that stinky Daoist would be less annoying and less inclined to get to the bottom of things the next time he came looking for trouble.

With that, the young man waved his hand. A black crow perched on the gate of Intoxicating Nights suddenly spread its wings and shot toward the middle-aged man with the fanatical gaze like an arrow.

At that moment, Lin You, the dying Cat Immortal, lay in his blind master’s arms, meowing softly to comfort him. The translator had been destroyed by the lightning, so for now, Cat Lord Lin could only meow pitifully while placing his little paws on his master’s hand to convey the message, “ Don’t worry.”

Fortunately, Mu Yanxiao had risked being injured to keep his pet in his arms, so the dark purple lightning had not left Lin You completely charred. Otherwise, Young Master Mu wouldn’t merely have been heartbroken and emotionally unstable. He would probably have gone completely berserk, and that rampage wouldn’t end until he found whoever had summoned the lightning and shot him dead.

Mu Yanxiao’s mood was terrible at that moment. Although he already knew that Linlin wouldn’t leave him completely because of this death, the feeling of something so important suddenly being torn away from him without warning still made him feel as though his heartbeat had stopped, as though even his blood had stopped flowing.

His heart ached terribly.

“Linlin, I’ll take you home right away. Then I’ll stay home and wait for you to come back.”

The only response was a faint meow that grew weaker by the second. That soft, hoarse sound felt as though a giant hammer had slammed directly into Mu Yanxiao’s heart.

“You have to come back. If you run off with someone else halfway there, I’ll dig three feet into the ground and search the entire Qinling Mountains to bring you back.” Mu Yanxiao practically growled the words through clenched teeth. “Did you hear me?”

This time, there wasn’t even a faint meow in response. There was only the soft little body in Mu Yanxiao’s arms, still holding a trace of warmth.

“Tch. So you’re really a stupid master. Since I said I’d stay with you, why would I have something wrong with my brain and run off with someone else? But at least you’re smart enough to know to look for me in the Qinling Mountains if I disappear. I just wonder if you’ll be able to handle my bandit-queen of a mom, my bandit of a dad, my scheming Big Uncle, and all those other unreliable relatives.”

Lin You, now a ghost floating in the air, looked at his foolish master, who seemed as though he had lost his parents. Although he complained without showing the slightest sympathy, his incorporeal hands remained firmly on his master’s shoulders. The pose made him look somewhat like a ghost haunting someone’s back. Because of this, Lin You didn’t notice the middle-aged man approaching them.

Suddenly, Mu One raised his head and said to the man, “What are you doing? Don’t come any closer. Otherwise, don’t blame me for being impolite.”

At the same time, Lin You suddenly felt an enormous force pulling at him from behind. It was even stronger than the suction he had experienced when he encountered the Black Crow, and this time it came with the painful sensation of his soul being torn apart.

“What’s going on?!”

Lin You was shocked. He turned around and saw a middle-aged man surrounded by a towering aura of resentment staring straight at him. In his hand was a piece of ghost jade capable of imprisoning souls.

“The fuck! Do you have to go this far?! It’s not enough that you killed my body. Now you want to imprison me and turn me into your evil ghost?! Do you even know who I am?! I’ll scare you to death if I tell you!!”

The problem was that Lin You, now a ghost, couldn’t speak.

Reality was truly tragic.

Just when Lin You thought he was about to be sucked into the ghost jade, he saw a rather familiar figure rushing toward him from the tall gate, surrounded by howling black wind.

…Why do I always run into the Black Crow whenever I die?

What surprised everyone was that the black crow swooped straight at the middle-aged man’s right hand. Its sharp claws tore into his hand, making Kun Yu cry out in pain and involuntarily loosen his grip.

Then Kun Yu, Lin You, Mu Yanxiao, and the others watched as the Black Crow bent down without hesitation and swallowed the ghost jade whole with its sharp beak. It then turned its head and glanced at Lin You’s ghost, who was wiping away cold sweat. With an especially haughty turn of its head, it flapped its wings and flew away. At this point, Mu One didn’t even need to guess. He knew that the middle-aged man standing before them was the culprit behind Linlin’s death. He quietly informed Mu Yanxiao of the situation.

Mu Yanxiao suddenly raised his deep, dark eyes, fixing them on Kun Yu.

“Take him.”

Suppressing his anger and the doubts he had just felt, Mu Yanxiao gave the order to Mu One and the others.

Mu One didn’t care what consequences kidnapping someone in public might bring. He exchanged a glance with Mu Five, and a few seconds later, the two of them forcibly dragged Kun Yu into the car. Then, amid the bewildered and astonished gazes of the onlookers, the Mu Family’s convoy drove away.

“…Kun Yu really is an idiot.”

In a corner beside the entrance to Intoxicating Nights, Ling You watched the departing cars with an ugly expression. Although that cat spirit appeared to be thoroughly dead, Kun Yu’s capture meant that Mu Yanxiao would uncover many of the boss’s most secret and shameful affairs. He could only hurry back and inform the boss.

As for Mu Yanxiao, he could only hope that the man would kill Kun Yu in his rage. About five minutes later, the young man in the white shirt and black trousers emerged from Intoxicating Nights carrying an exquisitely crafted food box. He turned left and right along a secluded path, and before long, his figure disappeared without a trace.

Another five minutes later, Lin You’s Little Uncle also arrived. His features were both slightly wicked and extremely handsome, but his mood was clearly terrible. He looked at the secluded path, then at the direction in which the Mu Family’s convoy had left. His handsome brows drew tightly together, as though he were making a difficult choice.

“…Stupid brat.”

In the end, Little Uncle Lin turned and walked in the direction the Mu Family’s convoy had gone, his voice filled with annoyance. The dark aura surrounding him, however, showed that his mood had already sunk to rock bottom.

……

Half an hour later, at the Mu Family residence in City B.

Mu Yanming stood extremely nervously in the room, staring at his brother, who had been sitting on the sofa in silence ever since they returned, holding the cat’s corpse in his arms. He was practically ready to call out to the numbered Mus for help. The worst part was that he didn’t even dare make a sound under the circumstances, afraid that his furious brother might drag him outside and bury him alive.

Mu Yanming knew very well that he was more than ninety percent responsible for what had happened to Linlin the cat spirit today. If Linlin hadn’t wanted to help him reform and turn his life around, he wouldn’t have gone to such lengths to take him to the library. And if he had kept his temper when Xu Bowen provoked him and hadn’t followed him to Intoxicating Nights, the Great Cat Immortal wouldn’t have been struck dead by lightning.

Mu Yanming stood there woodenly, looking at his brother, who seemed as though his soul had left his body, and the motionless cat in his arms. An overwhelming sense of guilt washed over him, making it difficult to breathe. He took a deep breath and gritted his teeth before speaking.

“Brother! This was my fault. You can hit me or punish me however you want. I won’t resist. But if you keep sitting here like this, it’s bad for your health!”

Mu Yanming had mustered all his courage to say it, but his words didn’t cause the slightest change in his older brother. After a long silence, he finally heard his brother’s low, hoarse voice.

“Get out.”

Mu Yanming opened his mouth as if he wanted to say something else, but in the end, he could only sigh in frustration and dejection before obediently leaving the room. However, barely a minute after Mu Yanming left, Mu Yanxiao and the rest of the Mu Family suddenly heard a howl that unmistakably belonged to Mu Yanming.

The sound was particularly miserable and pitiful, as though someone had just given him a thorough beating.

…But who else could possibly be in the Mu Family’s courtyard right now?!

Mu One’s eyes widened abruptly. Even he hadn’t noticed anyone approaching!

Mu Yanxiao frowned when he heard the voice. A few seconds later, he suddenly sprang to his feet and hurried toward the door, knocking over several things along the way. When he opened the door, his voice came out filled with both doubt and anticipation.

“Linlin? Is that you?”

Standing at the entrance to the Mu residence, Lin You’s Little Uncle looked at the foolish expression on the face of the person who had opened the door. His lips twitched as he said with utmost malice, “What kind of dream are you having in broad daylight?”

Mu Yanxiao froze.

Then the aura around him instantly turned sharp, and his speed became so fast that even Little Uncle Lin raised an eyebrow.

“Who are you? What’s your relationship with Linlin?”

Mu Yanxiao keenly noticed the slight change in the man’s aura when he mentioned Linlin. Combined with the malicious response that followed, Young Master Mu even concluded that this was the villain who had captured Linlin’s soul and had come here to negotiate terms with him.

“We can discuss whatever you want. But if anything happens to Linlin, I’ll make you regret being born into this world.”

Little Uncle Lin’s lips twitched again. An idiot was an idiot. He and that idiot nephew really were a match made in heaven.

Too lazy to waste any more time arguing with this mentally unstable man, Little Uncle Lin directly tossed the small green turtle he was carrying at Young Master Mu’s face.

As Mu Yanxiao stared in astonishment, he said, “It’ll die in an hour. What you do after that, I don’t need to teach you, do I?”

Mu Yanxiao was too shocked to speak for a moment. Then he heard that malicious voice let out a few cold laughs.

“Of course, if you’d rather stew it into a pot of soup, I have no objections.”

Mu Yanxiao, “…”

“Besides, your brother is such a pain in the ass. I gave him a good beating for you and that idiot. You don’t have a problem with that, do you?”

As he spoke, Little Uncle Lin planted one more foot on the person sprawled on the ground before turning around and leaving without hesitation. Naturally, he didn’t forget to leave a threat behind.

“Tell that idiot I don’t want to clean up his mess a third time. I’ve already owed two favors because of him. If there’s a third time, he can just go ahead and die.”

Meanwhile, the guy being called an idiot watched his Little Uncle’s departing back with a frustrated, conflicted expression. He silently wondered whether, after surviving his tribulation and returning to human form, his extremely vengeful and vindictive Little Uncle would enslave him to death…
