Chapter 64: Attack on a Rainy Night

Mu Yanming looked at his aunt cursing at the front gate and felt a slight ache in his balls. He thought he was finally getting into the swing of things, so how had he ended up running into this troublemaker here?

Even with his limited brainpower, Mu Yanming knew that she had definitely come with bad intentions. The moment his aunt turned around and started cursing at him, his suspicions were thoroughly confirmed.

“Ah! You little brat, you actually dared to come back?! Your brother is a bastard, and you’re a little ingrate too! Do you remember who fed you when you were little? Seeing how happily you ate back then, who would have thought that more than ten years later you’d open your mouth to bite me?!”

Zhang Ya pointed directly at Mu Yanming’s nose and started cursing. If Mu Yanming hadn’t already been subjected to a baptism of verbal abuse from his friends over the past few days since his return, Zhang Ya’s few words alone would have made him jump. With a fierce snort, Mu Yanming launched into his Second Young Master’s counterattack.

“Don’t talk about things from when we were little. Who remembers things from that long ago clearly? Besides, Grandfather wasn’t even dead back then, was he? We hadn’t reached the point of fighting to the death yet. You fed me, and my mom must have fed your son too! Why talk about all that useless stuff? Let’s talk about something more useful! Given Chen Yuhe’s habit of doing shady things without even telling you, I’m sure he hasn’t told you what he and his older cousin have done to the two of us over the years.”

“Although I thought you might have had some idea of what was going on, it seems I was too naive. You insist on believing that everything is our fault, but why don’t you ever think about this? If we hadn’t been pushed to the limit, why would my brother, with the Mu Family being at least a little stronger than our maternal grandfather’s family in every respect, bother fighting with you people?!”

“Ever since my brother turned twenty-five and Zheng Yuhu turned twenty-seven, when Grandfather’s lawyer announced that the inheritance was open for everyone to contend for, it’s been five years of this. Our seemingly refined and gentlemanly eldest cousin alone has sent people to assassinate us five times, caused more than a dozen car accidents, and spread so many rumors and threats that I’ve lost count. If you wanted Grandfather’s inheritance, fine. You could have just talked to us nicely, and we could have divided it peacefully. Hell, if you could guarantee that you would treat the two of us well, we wouldn’t even have to fight over the inheritance. But ever since the inheritance dispute began, our eldest cousin and younger cousin have gone all out to make trouble, as if they were afraid they wouldn’t be able to kill us. It’s already come to this. If my brother doesn’t fight back, is he supposed to just wait around until they actually kill him?”

Zhang Ya didn’t believe Mu Yanming’s words at all. She was about to retort with a look of disbelief when Mu Yanming waved a hand and cut her off. “Don’t disbelieve me! Look at my brother now! Do you remember how capable he used to be? And then a car accident two months ago nearly killed him. The mole they uncovered afterward was someone your Chen Family had paid a huge sum to bribe. The evidence is right there. Do you want to take a look?”

“And then there’s this time. I know I’ve been a bit of a slacker and haven’t exactly been doing anything productive, but at least I genuinely haven’t argued with you, have I? Even if you pressured my brother, I had nothing to do with any of it. By all rights, I’m an outsider. But what happened? I went to B City and nearly lost my life, my reputation, and my innocence there. If my brother hadn’t arrived in time, I’d probably be in rehab right now. Aunt, I’m calling you Aunt out of respect, so tell me, do you really think our eldest and youngest cousins handled this properly? And don’t tell me my younger cousin knew nothing about it. Mu Seven was bribed by his people, and several of the people who set me up in B City had private dealings with him. If you’re still going to call us bastards after all that, then honestly, I don’t think your son is any better than us! He’s even worse!”

“You! You’re slandering me! My A’he is such a good child! You little brat, how dare you smear him like that?!”

Looking at Zhang Ya’s stubborn refusal to listen to reason, Mu Yanming finally couldn’t help but chuckle twice.

“Fine! My brother and I are little brats, then. So do you want to see the evidence we’ve collected? Or maybe we don’t need to bother. Since you think your son is such a good person, I’ll just upload all the evidence of the things he’s done online. The police will come looking for him eventually anyway. You can just wait at home! This little brat is done entertaining you!!”

As he spoke, Mu Yanming took advantage of Zhang Ya’s momentary distraction and darted through the gate. He quickly shut it behind him, leaving Zhang Ya standing alone outside the courtyard gate, her expression constantly changing.

Just as Mu Yanming had said, she was somewhat aware of what her son and his cousin had been doing. After all, as the wife of a relatively powerful family’s head, she wasn’t that foolish. But now that Mu Yanming had ruthlessly stripped away that outer layer, Zhang Ya felt more anger and resentment than embarrassment.

What do you mean we’re trying to wipe you out? If you had known your place from the beginning and hadn’t fought us for Father’s wealth and influence, would we have done any of this to you? Or are you simply incapable of knowing your own place?!

So, Young Master Mu was right. Even if Zhang Ya ran headfirst into a wall, she’d only blame the wall for blocking her, never admitting that she herself was at fault. She simply took everything for granted.

“Stupid” wasn’t enough to describe her. This was an illness. It needed treatment!

Unfortunately, Aunt Zhang Ya had already chosen the irreversible path of giving up treatment.

“You bastard!! How dare you speak to your aunt like that?! Come out and let your brother talk to me!! Isn’t it enough that he swallowed half of the Chen and Zheng families’ legitimate assets?! Now he’s even taking away the illegal side too!! What does he mean by this?! Is he planning to wipe us out completely? Isn’t he afraid the heavens will send down a bolt of lightning and strike him dead?!”

Zhang Ya paused only briefly before continuing to shout on her own. Her nonstop yelling gradually attracted the attention of passersby, and Zhang Ya even spotted someone secretly filming the scene with their phone. Suddenly, an idea occurred to her, and she lowered her head and began working herself up.

She started with quiet sobs, which gradually turned into loud wails. If nothing unexpected happened next, tomorrow’s front pages would surely be plastered with headlines like: [The Mu Family Is Powerful and Ruthless, Wiping Out Their Own Relatives?!] The problem was, something unexpected did happen.

Just as Zhang Ya was shouting herself hoarse that the Mu brothers had no regard for family ties, were inhumane, and deserved to be struck by lightning, the heavens obligingly answered with a thunderous boom. Within just a few minutes, the sky, which had only been slightly overcast, became covered in dark clouds. Thunder rumbled and lightning flashed one after another. What made the onlookers and Zhang Ya herself turn pale was that several bolts of lightning actually struck right beside them!

When the onlookers saw an excited young man holding up his phone get struck by lightning, they quickly wiped the looks of amusement from their faces. They nervously glanced at the heavens before hurrying away. If Mu Yanxiao and his brother really were the ones who deserved to be struck by lightning, then why was the lightning striking over here? The Mu Family’s main house was only a little over two hundred meters away. How come nothing had happened there?

The grudges between prominent families, huh? Hehe. There was always more to them than met the eye. For them, watching the spectacle was enough.

Zhang Ya had never imagined that her aggressive visit to Mu Yanxiao’s villa would end like this. She was practically furious! Was she really going to leave empty-handed?! No, she absolutely refused to accept it!!

At that thought, Zhang Ya looked at the lightning raining down from the sky and suddenly remembered the conversation between her older sister and her eldest nephew earlier.

Mom, those two, Mu Yanxiao and his brother, have completely disregarded family ties. If all else fails, I’ll just set their house on fire. Even if it doesn’t burn them to death, it’ll at least let me vent my anger!

A’hu! Don’t be impulsive. Are you stupid?! You and your cousin still have your whole lives and careers ahead of you. Even if things really come to the point of mutual destruction, I’ll be the only one to die with them. You two still have to stay with your aunt and live a good life!

A look of near-madness appeared on Zhang Ya’s face. At that moment, as if possessed, she could no longer drive the thought of “burning the Mu brothers alive” from her mind. If anything, it became increasingly vivid.

Crack!! Crash—!!

After a startling bolt of lightning, beneath the sky that suddenly flashed bright before darkening again, Zhang Ya’s face was as sinister and menacing as a demon’s.

With this heavy rain today, wasn’t this the perfect scene for a crime? Fires were difficult in rainy weather, but bombs and poison would be much easier, wouldn’t they? Yes, poison. Poisonous gas. Once they were dead, she could just open the windows, and nothing would be left behind!

Zhang Ya laughed. Since the two brothers were so heartless, then they couldn’t blame their aunt for being ruthless. Otherwise, if they waited any longer, the Chen Family would end up even worse off than the Zheng Family, and they’d really have to declare bankruptcy and flee to some small city!

Meanwhile, inside the villa, Mu Yanming was vividly recounting to his older brother how he had “outwitted his wicked aunt for three hundred rounds.” However, after talking for ages, all he got in response was a thoroughly indifferent hum. Second Young Master Mu immediately became dejected. If he had to compare it to something, his tail had been wagging ingratiatingly with his tongue hanging out just moments ago, but now it had all drooped.

“Alright, it’s getting late. If there’s nothing else, I’ll go upstairs to sleep, brother?”

Mu Yanxiao nodded, then turned his head and listened to the heavy rain outside with some regret. Under these circumstances, no matter how ruthless he was, there was no way he could make his younger brother go back to his own place to sleep.

Mu Yanxiao reached out and stroked his pet, who seemed a little more energetic in the rainy weather. After thinking for a moment, he said, “How about we listen to the rain for a while? I never paid much attention to it before, but now I feel that every sound of rain is different. Each has its own character.”

Lin You, the recently-depressed-because-of-his-size Turtle Immortal, extended a claw and gently scratched his blind master’s palm. One scratch meant yes, and two meant no. Even if our bodies bring us all kinds of inconveniences, we can use our wisdom to simplify things.

I have to give humanity’s ingenuity thirty-two thumbs-up!

However, this most basic form of “yes-or-no communication” was fine for ordinary matters, but if it was used to express affection… hehe.

Young Master Mu felt that he couldn’t exactly ask his pet, “Linlin, do you really like me?” and then wait for him to scratch him once. He’d probably end up getting scratched a dozen times!

So, turtles and the like were just too much of a pain in the ass.

The two sat quietly for an hour, listening to the torrential rain, until the sky turned completely dark. Accompanied by the howling wind, torrential rain, and flashes of lightning and thunder outside, it seemed to foreshadow that tonight would surely be a sleepless, stormy night.

The clock inside the house struck ten times in succession.

It was exactly ten o’clock at night.

After sitting by the window for two hours, Young Master Mu finally got up and stretched his slightly stiff body. He turned around and carried his pet toward the bedroom.

Since Linlin was now a little green turtle, he could no longer serve as Young Master Mu’s personal guide pet. Therefore, whenever Mu Yanxiao went outside, he wore a miniature earpiece through which Mu One gave him directions. Mu One, Mu Two, and the others had already gone to the villa next door, where two people would monitor the security cameras through the night. Combined with the villa’s security system, that was enough to ensure their safety.

As for his own villa, Young Master Mu had been blind for more than two months, and he had already memorized the layout of the house perfectly. So even without anyone giving him directions, he moved around smoothly. However, just as he was about to enter the bedroom and close the door, a strange sound made him stop in his tracks. Mu Yanxiao tightened his grip on Lin You, a sense of foreboding rising in his heart.

Although the dull sound was barely noticeable beneath the rain, there was something distinctly out of place about it. Mu Yanxiao frowned deeply, and an incredulous expression appeared on his face.

Without a second thought, he stuffed Lin You into his pocket, then groped his way upstairs and kicked open his foolish younger brother’s bedroom door. The thunderous crash startled both Mu Yanming and the dozing Lin You.

“W-What’s going on?!”

Mu Yanming shouted, only for Mu Yanxiao to grab him and shove a round object into his hand.

“Take Linlin and hide in the underground secret room immediately! Something’s wrong!”

Mu Yanming froze, then, overcome by a bout of chuunibyou, raised his head and refused. “Brother! You can’t see! You should take Linlin and hide! I’ll grab the gun and deal with them!”

The moment he finished speaking, Mu Yanming got a hard smack on the forehead from his brother. “Mu One and the others are on their way here. They’ll probably arrive in about two minutes, but we don’t know how many people the enemy brought. This is a surprise attack. The Zheng and Chen families have truly lost their minds. Even if we die in this attack, those two families will be finished anyway! How could Zheng Yuhu make such a stupid mistake?!”

“No matter what, take Linlin and hide first. If anything happens to him, don’t ever come back to see me.” After saying that, Young Master Mu grabbed his foolish younger brother and ran toward the secret room on the first floor. He nearly fell twice because he was moving too quickly. Seeing this, Second Young Master Mu gritted his teeth and decided to sneak out again after they entered the secret room. His brother really wasn’t in any condition to face a group of madmen in his current state.

Meanwhile, Young Master Lin You, a turtle with the most ridiculously inconvenient body in history, had only one thought.

Are you fucking kidding me?! A surprise attack while I’m a turtle?! What the hell do you expect me to do?! Become a living turtle shell and shield my blind master from bullets?!
