Chapter 66: You’re On Your Own
Zhang Ya, Zhang Shan, and their husbands had all been “invited” to Mu Yanxiao’s garden farmhouse.
At this point, three of the four were still wearing pajamas, while the fourth was dressed in bright clothes. All four wore uneasy, bewildered expressions, but Zhang Ya was especially pale. Looking at Mu Yanxiao sitting calmly and completely unharmed in front of her, she desperately wanted to make a run for it.
“Yanxiao, what are you doing? Kidnapping your own aunt in the middle of the night? Have you lost your mind?” Zhang Shan was much calmer than Zhang Ya. Although Zhang Ya’s expression told her that something serious had happened, she still believed Mu Yanxiao would never do anything truly cruel to them.
This time, however, she had misjudged him.
Mu Yanxiao answered with an unabashed sneer. “Aunt, why don’t you ask my Aunt Ya what she did to make me go this far? If I hadn’t been lucky tonight, you might have been reading about me in the papers tomorrow. Either injured by a group of thugs or dead.”
“After what happened tonight, I’ve given it some thought. Even though you’re my relatives, I’m done making concessions and leaving trouble for later. So I’m afraid you’ll have to spend some time in prison. I’ll make sure they give each of you a private cell.”
Zhang Shan’s expression immediately darkened. Her first thought wasn’t to question Zhang Ya, because Mu Yanxiao had already made the situation clear enough. More importantly, she suddenly remembered something she and Yuhu had deliberately said in front of Zhang Ya.
She was utterly useless. All she’d done was make things worse!!
Zhang Shan gritted her teeth inwardly, but her face took on a sorrowful expression. “Yanxiao, no matter what happened, you can’t treat your aunt like this. Yes, Zhang Ya did something wrong by you, but even if you took her family’s property and drove them to some small town, you shouldn’t send her to prison!”
Hearing Zhang Shan still defending her, Zhang Ya was suddenly overcome with emotion and blurted out, “Sis! He’s a bastard! Why are you still talking to him like this? I was just unlucky enough not to kill him!!”
Mu Yanxiao’s lips twitched.
Mu Yanming, who had been sitting quietly to the side, rolled his eyes. “Aunt Ya, I’ve met plenty of stupid people, but I’ve never seen anyone as stupid as you!! Can’t you tell that Aunt Shan has been using you from the very beginning? If you, the one who hired people to kill us, get off scot-free, wouldn’t she be completely innocent? Think about it. She probably knows more about everything that’s been done against our family than you do, and she’s probably been planning things even more carefully.”
Zhang Ya froze. Before she could make sense of what he’d said, her husband turned on her and started shouting.
“How many times have I told you?! Stay away from your sister!! We’re always the ones who take the blame when something goes wrong, and we never get a damn thing when there’s something to gain!! The Chen Family was doing just fine! And you’ve turned us into nothing but the Zheng Family’s lackeys!! How many times has this happened? Are you seriously too stupid to see it?! You even dragged our son into this!! And even now, you still haven’t figured it out?! If you want your nephew dead so badly, why doesn’t the Zheng Family do it themselves?! Why do they have to send you, you stupid woman, to do it?!”
Zhang Ya’s eyes immediately turned red. Even though she had begun to realize that something was wrong, she couldn’t stand the person who had always been submissive to her suddenly becoming assertive and blaming her!
“Chen Jiatian, what did you say?! How dare you talk to me like that?! Don’t you know who I’m doing this for?! Isn’t it all for the Chen Family?! If you were capable of making the Chen Family better than the Zheng Family, would I have to fawn over my sister just to get a little help and a few benefits from them?! You good-for-nothing!”
In no time at all, the four people who should have been on the same side were tearing into each other like rabid dogs, because none of them was willing to admit they were in the wrong.
If anyone who knew them had witnessed the scene, their eyes probably would have popped out of their heads. These four were all prominent figures in City A, yet right now they looked like a bunch of squabbling shrews and street thugs.
“Mu Four. Take them away and hand all the evidence you’ve collected over to the police. Consider it a little gift from me. The day after tomorrow, we’ll take over all the assets and business interests of the Zheng and Chen families.”
Mu Four nodded happily. Even if this wasn’t exactly a case of taking advantage of someone else’s downfall, there was still something satisfying about getting your hands on the spoils. There was just one problem.
“What about Zheng Yuhu and Chen Yuhe?”
“Wait. They’ll come looking for us sooner or later.” Mu Yanxiao gave a cold laugh. “They’re cornered like stray dogs. We just have to wait for them to come to us.”
Meanwhile, in a villa on the outskirts of City A, Zheng Yuhu smashed the glass in his hand in fury. Shards scattered across the floor, but nothing could put out the fire of his rage.
“Mu Yanxiao! Mu Yanxiao!! How dare you?!” Zheng Yuhu’s eyes were bloodshot with hatred. Mu Yanxiao’s actions that night had completely destroyed the Zheng Family’s foundation. Zheng Yuhu couldn’t understand why Mu Yanxiao had suddenly made his move tonight. But whatever the reason, the struggle between him and Mu Yanxiao had reached this point, and he had practically lost already.
“Cousin… do you think my mother and father will be okay? Will Mu Yanxiao kill them? Or… hurt them?” Chen Yuhe sat dazedly beside the sofa, clutching a square cushion tightly against his chest.
He should have known better than to speak. The moment he opened his mouth, Zheng Yuhu turned all his anger on him.
“Who the hell knows if they’re okay?! This whole mess was your mother’s doing!! She’s completely hopeless!! Hiring the Chen Family’s bodyguards to kill someone in the middle of the night!! What kind of idiot does something like that?! Even if she’d succeeded, she still wouldn’t have escaped the Mu Family’s revenge!!”
“She would’ve been better off planting a bomb under Mu Yanxiao’s car than barging straight into their house like that!! Idiot!! She’s an absolute idiot!! And what’s with that look on your face?! Don’t you realize that if it weren’t for your mother, we’d still be living normally instead of hiding here like a pair of stray dogs?! You need to understand that from tonight onward, everything our two families have will be gone!! I don’t even know how we’re supposed to turn things around now!!”
With that, Zheng Yuhu slammed the door behind him and left. Inside the room, Chen Yuhe clutched the cushion tightly. The fear on his face slowly twisted into something vicious, before finally becoming a look of utter mockery.
It’s all my mother’s fault? If your mother hadn’t encouraged mine to join forces against Mu Yanxiao in the first place, how would the Chen Family have ended up like this?! Before we became enemies with our second cousin, our relationship might not have been great, but at least we had peaceful, comfortable lives. And now? It’s all gone, and you’re calling my mother an idiot?! Zheng Yuhu, if you’re going to be this heartless, don’t blame me for being ruthless!!
Chen Yuhe raised his head and stared intently at the door to Zheng Yuhu’s bedroom. A sinister smile slowly spread across his face.
I wonder how pleased my second cousin would be if I traded Lu Yuan’s identity and information for my parents’ safety?
In a shadowed corner of the villa, Ling You frowned slightly as he watched the unfriendly expression on Chen Yuhe’s face.
This man could be trouble for the boss.
……
The following morning, newspapers across the country were scrambling to report a major piece of news. The Zheng and Chen companies had been implicated in a series of crimes, including tax evasion, bribery, and smuggling. More than 180 people in high-ranking positions had been approved for arrest, including the chairmen and general managers of the Zheng and Chen companies, along with a number of other prominent figures.
After the Zheng and Chen companies filed for bankruptcy, the Mu Family announced that it would acquire and restructure both companies. Although the exact details of the acquisitions would take a long time to negotiate, it was undoubtedly sensational news.
Even Grandfather Mu called the next day to ask what had happened. After hearing about everything his grandson had gone through, the old man smashed the blue-and-white porcelain teapot in his hand and angrily declared that his eldest grandson had done a fine job! Meanwhile, Young Master Mu, who had single-handedly put on such a spectacular display the night before, was obediently staying in a VIP room at the First Hospital with his pet, enduring Dean Ouyang’s tirade.
“Do you think everything I tell you goes in one ear and out the other?! How many times have I told you not to strain yourself or do anything too strenuous?! And what did you do?! You ignored me completely!! You think taking on five thugs by yourself is something to brag about?! Your brain must’ve been chewed up by a dog!!”
Ouyang Ming was furious. He was practically ready to cry from frustration. Aside from patients who were genuinely incapable of understanding instructions, he’d never seen anyone so determined to ignore their doctor’s orders and treat their own condition like it didn’t matter. And to make matters worse, this particular patient loved giving him attitude!
“If I didn’t owe Elder Mu such a huge favor, I wouldn’t bother with you!! You’re staying in the hospital!! From today onward, you’re spending the next two weeks here for observation and treatment!! And don’t even think about arguing with me!! Otherwise, I’ll tell Elder Mu everything about your condition, and then you can deal with him yourself!!”
With that, Dean Ouyang stormed out and slammed the door behind him, leaving Mu Yanxiao, Lin You, Mu Four, and Mu Five staring at one another.
After a long silence, Young Master Mu cleared his throat. “Alright, you two can go out. I want to rest for a while.”
Mu Four and Mu Five couldn’t get out of there fast enough. They immediately slipped away.
Once they were gone, Mu Yanxiao poked the green turtle pretending to be dead in his hand. “Linlin, you can obviously talk, so stop being too lazy to speak. I need some comfort right now.”
Lin You was getting annoyed from all the poking. He stretched out a claw and scratched Mu Yanxiao’s hand before slowly saying, “Tired. Sore throat. I feel like I’m about to die.”
Mu Yanxiao’s hand froze. After a moment, he asked uncertainly, “Is it because of what happened last night?”
Lin You raised his head and was about to nod, but then he saw the figure standing in the two-meter-wide window and froze.
“…Th-this is bad…” Lin You’s voice trembled.
Mu Yanxiao frowned. “What? What’s wrong?” But the moment he finished speaking, his entire body tensed. He turned sharply toward the window and barked, “Who’s there?!”
A gust of wind suddenly swept through the room and blew the window open. Then came the rhythmic clicking of high heels against the floor.
“Your pet stole something precious of mine. If you don’t want to die, hand him over to me. I’ll cure your eyes in return. How about it?”
The voice was clear and bright, like jade beads striking a plate, but to Mu Yanxiao, it was unbearably grating. Without the slightest hesitation, he replied coldly:
“Whether you’re human or a ghost, you can forget it.”
The moment Mu Yanxiao finished speaking, Lin You the Turtle Immortal let out a silent wail and, with absolutely no backbone whatsoever, pulled his head, claws, legs, and tail back into his shell.
QAQ. Blind master, the final boss is here. You’re on your own!
