Chapter 72: The Unflappable Dog Emperor

With a gold card in their possession, even the greeter Zhang Fang had no reason to refuse the shopping demands of these two “cat-and-dog customers.” After all, every store followed the sacred principle of “the customer comes first.”

To put it more simply: as long as you had money, it didn’t matter whether you were human, animal, or even some kind of spirit—the doors would be thrown wide open to welcome you! Such was the wisdom of a shrewd businessman.

As it happened, the owner of this supermarket was exactly that kind of shrewd businessman. So after briefly weighing the pros and cons of escorting animals around the store, Zhang Fang decisively put on her sweetest smile, bent down to reveal her alluring cleavage, and said, “Welcome, honored customers. This is your greeter, Zhang Fang, at your service~ You’re free to choose anything you like in our store~ Um, of course, if you don’t mind, may I first check how much money is available on the card?”

Lin You looked disdainfully at the greeter, whose eyes had practically started treating them like gods the moment she saw the gold card. She probably wanted to check the balance because she was afraid they’d picked the card up off the street. Seriously, did ordinary cats and dogs have enough intelligence to recognize and pick up a gold card? To them, a steamed bun would be a hundred times more attractive! And so, Young Master Lin reached out a paw and patted Garfield again, letting out two soft whines.

“This woman wants you to enter the PIN. Haven’t you been dying to try using the gold card yourself? Go punch in the password and make their eyes pop out! Your owner will be incredibly proud of you. Your intelligence already puts most humans to shame!”

Sometimes even humans couldn’t resist a little flattery, much less Garfield, who had been showered with praise by his owner ever since he was a kitten.

Hearing Lin You say this, Garfield immediately raised his head with pride and strutted forward with elegant feline steps. Then, under everyone’s astonished gazes, he entered the six-digit PIN for the gold card.

Meanwhile, Lin You stretched his doggy head over from the side and sneakily memorized the PIN. Even if an ordinary person learned the password, they still wouldn’t be able to use the card, and trying might even earn them the full force of Grandpa KFC’s furious retaliation. But for Lin You, best buddy of a certain fat cat, once he knew the PIN, it was practically the same as gaining free access to the card.

What? Young Master Lin already had a gold card from his own master? Did you think he was stupid?! When there was a sucker eagerly volunteering to pay the bill, only someone with a tragically low IQ would insist on splitting the check!

Naturally, only the cashier and Zhang Fang could see the balance displayed on the card. That endless string of zeros nearly blinded them. The moment Zhang Fang saw the number, she sucked in a sharp breath, and then her face practically blossomed into a flower. These two weren’t merely filthy rich—they were filthy rich suckers! No matter what happened, she absolutely could not let these customers get away!

Once the balance had been confirmed, Lin You and Garfield didn’t bother waiting for Zhang Fang to say anything else. They turned around and began shopping.

Zhang Fang stared blankly at the retreating cat and dog for a moment before pursing her lips and hurrying after them. Several other greeters had already started glancing in their direction, and there was absolutely no way she was letting anyone steal her big-spending customers. After catching up with Lin You and Garfield in just a few steps, Zhang Fang launched enthusiastically into introductions for every product they passed, completely unconcerned with whether the cat and dog could actually understand her.

Seeing how excessively attentive Zhang Fang was, quite a few people curled their lips in disdain. Treating a cat and dog as though they were actual people—wasn’t she embarrassed?! But before long, those same people began feeling rather sour. They watched Zhang Fang push three small shopping carts toward the checkout one after another. Every single cart was piled to the brim, and even then, she showed no sign of stopping.

“…Tsk. These days even animals get treated like people. Society really is going downhill!!” A long-faced man found the sight particularly offensive.

But the moment he finished speaking, the woman in the wheelchair beside him immediately shot him down. “If you’re so jealous that you can’t stand seeing others doing well, you should get that treated. Humans are allowed to burn money just to keep warm. Humans are allowed to crack open a monkey’s skull just to eat its brains. So why exactly can’t a cat and dog come shopping together?! They haven’t damaged anything, and they’re even paying for what they buy. Compared to some people who start acting like idiots the moment they have money, these two are practically saints.”

“Hmph! I don’t bother arguing with women! An animal is still an animal!” The long-faced man’s face flushed before he irritably turned his head away.

“You’re incompetent and broke, yet somehow you’re blaming animals for it. You’re not even as good as they are.” After saying this, the woman wheeled herself away. She had already gotten the adorable photos she wanted, so there was no point wasting more time arguing with this cynical, self-important man, especially if he might end up venting his anger on the pets instead.

Unfortunately, the woman had still overestimated the long-faced man’s capacity for restraint. Once she left, the surrounding onlookers began regarding him with obvious contempt. After all, what kind of man couldn’t even tolerate seeing pets go shopping and then picked a fight with a woman over it?

Most of what the cat and dog had bought was food. Neither of the two little creatures had knocked things over or made a mess after entering the supermarket. In fact, they had been exceptionally well behaved. After finishing their shopping, they obediently paid at the register, then sat quietly on two little round cushions to wait. No matter how you looked at them, they were practically model pets.

Yet the long-faced man somehow felt personally humiliated by the whole scene. Judging by his expression, he practically looked ready to rush over and steal their money and purchases himself. Under the faintly contemptuous and disgusted gazes of everyone around him, the man—who had already found Lin You and Garfield offensive just by existing—finally snapped.

His blood rushed to his head, and he stormed over in several quick steps. As the cat and dog simultaneously raised their heads and looked at him with huge, watery eyes, the man viciously kicked the mountain of food stacked in front of them, scattering it everywhere without the slightest hesitation.

Naturally, the sudden violence startled Garfield, who, intelligent as he was, was still ultimately an animal.

“MEOW-OW!!” An enraged yowl echoed through the supermarket waiting area. Garfield leaped onto a chair and snarled furiously at the long-faced man, every strand of fur standing on end. He looked ready to launch himself straight at the man’s face and shred it with his claws. Garfield might be an exceptionally intelligent cat, but still! That kick was nothing less than a blatant provocation!

In stark contrast to Garfield’s explosive fury, Young Master Lin You, currently inhabiting the body of a husky puppy, suddenly displayed none of the breed’s usual stupidity or insanity. He remained seated steadily on his cushion, unmoving as a mountain, staring at the long-faced man as though he were nothing more than a piece of garbage. That absolute composure instantly made him the idol of every cat and dog secretly watching this momentous confrontation from nearby.

After kicking the pile of food away, the long-faced man finally felt somewhat satisfied, and when he saw Garfield bristling and yowling in rage, he became even happier. That was how an animal should behave! An animal was an animal. It could never compare to a human! But then his gaze shifted and landed on the husky puppy staring at him with pity. The temper he’d only just managed to calm instantly flared back to life. What was that look supposed to mean?! Was this dog actually looking down on him?! How ridiculous!!

“What are you looking at?! You’re a dog! Just a dog! Dogs are supposed to eat shit! Dogs are supposed to bark!! What kind of dog just sits there calmly without making a sound?! Bark! Hurry up and bark!! Bark for me, damn it!!” By the final sentence, the long-faced man was practically roaring. Yet Young Master Lin remained sitting calmly on his cushion, without moving so much as an inch. He didn’t even show the slightest trace of nervousness. That composure drove the man completely over the edge. His temper flared, and he charged forward again, raising one foot to kick the round, fluffy husky puppy.

“Stop! Are you insane?! That dog has an owner!!”

“What is wrong with you?! Did that puppy provoke you? Did he curse at you?! You’re going way too far!”

“Does your wife yell at you every day and you’re too scared to talk back, so you come bully animals instead?! How pathetic can you get, picking on a puppy that’s only a few months old?!”

But instead of stopping him, the crowd’s shouts only made the man even angrier! He simply couldn’t accept that an animal could live better than a human. Why should they?!

As the man’s foot was about to strike the little husky, several women couldn’t bear to watch and closed their eyes. There was considerable force behind that kick; if it connected, the puppy might very well end up bleeding from the head. At the critical moment, however, another leg suddenly shot out from the side and struck the man’s supporting leg with flawless precision. The next second, the long-faced man crashed face-first onto the floor, while his kick toward Lin You veered completely off course and slammed heavily into the ground instead.

“AAAAH—!! My leg! My leg!!” The long-faced man clutched his leg and howled incessantly. Furious, he twisted around to glare at whoever had attacked him. Standing nearby was a tall, square-faced man whose expression was cold enough to be almost ruthless. The sinister look in the man’s eyes was so frightening that the curses already rising to the long-faced man’s lips abruptly lodged in his throat.

“Y-you! What are you doing?! Y-you broke my leg! You have to compensate me! That’s right! You owe me compensation! One hundred thousand—no, at least five hundred thousand! Otherwise, I’ll sue you and have you thrown in prison!!”

Mu One looked at the long-faced man making a spectacle of himself on the floor without so much as twitching an eyebrow. Then he turned toward the little husky, who was still sitting calmly on his cushion as though he’d been nailed in place, and the corner of Mu One’s mouth twitched. This little thing had definitely smelled him nearby. That was the only reason he had dared to sit there so fearlessly. Still, that was exactly how things were. As long as Mu One was present, he would never allow anyone to hurt this… well, miraculous pet.

“As a human, you were born with better conditions and greater intelligence than an animal. If you still can’t make something of your life, the problem isn’t that these animals are too arrogant. It’s that you’re too stupid, too lazy, and too dissatisfied with everything,” Mu One said mercilessly.

“You’re the most pathetic kind of person. Some people may be poor too, but at least they’re working to change their circumstances. Someone like you, who does nothing but complain and envy others, will never earn anyone’s respect.”

“Besides, even when beating a dog, you’re supposed to look at who their owner is. You were the one who provoked him first, and I merely helped the dog defend himself afterward. We won’t be paying a cent toward your medical expenses. If you think you can do something about it, go ahead and sue.”

After delivering that long speech, Mu One turned toward Husky Lin You. Only then did Young Master Lin finally deign to lift his backside off the cushion. He gave a soft snort, lifted his paws, and trotted away with jaunty little steps. Naturally, his die-hard animal friend Garfield followed closely behind him.

Mu One watched the two little ancestors leave before turning toward Zhang Fang and the cashier. “Pack all of this up and send it to the top-floor ward in the inpatient building. And give me the gold card. There’s too much money on it. If even a cent disappears because someone gets greedy, this supermarket won’t need to stay open anymore.”

The cashier immediately trembled several times before respectfully presenting the gold card with both hands. Mu One nodded, put the card away, and only then headed toward the inpatient building.

Truthfully, Mu One wasn’t in a very good mood. He had spent three days investigating the Qinling Mountains. During those three days, he’d practically dug up every hunter living in the mountains, yet he hadn’t managed to uncover a single useful piece of information. He had even asked around about whether there were any Daoist practitioners in the Qinling Mountains, but everyone he questioned claimed to know absolutely nothing.

He had already resigned himself to returning empty-handed, but just as he was preparing to leave, he heard something while passing through a burial-clothing shop. What he heard made Mu One think that perhaps there was another way to investigate that “miraculous pet.”

You couldn’t expect to find a husky by searching a cat’s den, could you? If you wanted to find a husky, you had to ask sled dogs, Border Collies, or at the very least, a poodle.

……

When Mu One stepped into his boss’s hospital room, the first thing he saw was two major figures whose slightest movement could shake an entire corner of society, each holding a pet in his arms and softly murmuring while petting and comforting them.

Mu One: Actually, the miraculous one isn’t that husky. The truly miraculous thing is that my boss has somehow turned into this, okay?!
