Volume 1, Chapter 260 – Wuya

Shi Lan only felt as if a bolt of thunder had exploded inside her mind. The violent pain instantly robbed her of consciousness, and the system’s alert cut off abruptly.

The old man’s spirit entered Shi Lan’s sea of consciousness, and all of Shi Lan’s memories were laid bare before his eyes with almost nothing concealed.

“Earth…”

“The system…”

“The Sword Sovereign’s inheritance…”

In the space of a single instant, nearly half of Shi Lan’s memories had already been read.

There were too many secrets on Shi Lan, enough to shake even Sovereigns.

Before the old man could examine them further, an invisible and mighty force sealed off Shi Lan’s sea of consciousness, and he was abruptly plunged into a darkness so absolute that he could not see his own hand before his face.

Buzz.

A terrifying aura tore through the darkness. Through the haze, the old man saw a peerless figure, unmatched in bearing, wrapped in auspicious radiance and flowing divine light. The face could not be seen clearly. Though it stood right before him, it seemed separated from him by ages upon ages, visible yet forever beyond reach.

In a daze, a warm, jade-like hand slowly reached out. Accompanied by divine flames and heavenly glow that filled the sky, like a true immortal descending into the world, it pressed down toward the old man.

The old man’s spirit trembled violently, and immense terror welled up in his heart. He stood at the summit of the imperial path, and his understanding of space had long since reached its peak. He had already glimpsed the threshold of spacetime. This strike did not exist in the present age. Some supreme existence had reversed the river of time and space and was striking at him!

This was a power that did not exist in the current world. The old man was nearly driven to despair. Not even one who had become a Sovereign could have received this blow, much less him.

His end was near, and he had long since looked lightly upon life and death, but now, in the face of this power, his heart quailed.

The hand brushed lightly past. The old man’s spirit flickered once, like the last ember of a candle in the wind, and was utterly extinguished…

…

The instant the old man’s spirit was erased, a vast blood cloud suddenly appeared above Xianwu City, and a rain of blood poured down in drifting sheets.

The blood rain carried not the slightest trace of stench. Instead, it was filled with a faint fragrance. Whoever bathed in the rain, whether demon beast, human, mortal, or martial artist, found their flesh suffused with radiance and their physique strengthened by far more than a few degrees.

“Blood rain from the heavens. An Emperor has fallen.”

The martial artists in the city, ignorant of the truth, were all struck with horror.

“That Demon Emperor actually died…”

The Heaven-Men on the wall surrounded Shi Lan at the center and looked at one another in speechless silence.

Outside the formation, the Heaven Demons all lost color and turned in unison to look toward Lan Die’er, deep within the beast tide behind them.

Although Lan Die’er was severely wounded, in terms of cultivation and status, she was still the highest among them.

At the sight of the Demon Emperor’s death, Lan Die’er showed little panic or grief. She merely stared at the Xianwu Yin-Yang Grand Array in the sky, deep in thought.

Wuxu’s earlier sword strike had not only heavily wounded that Demon Emperor, it had nearly shattered the array foundation of the Xianwu Yin-Yang Grand Array as well. Though the formation had not broken, a flaw had finally appeared.

Shi Lan lay in a pool of blood. Her Innate spiritual body had automatically begun devouring spiritual qi to repair her body, and the blood rain falling from the sky was also slowly nourishing her wounds, gradually pulling her back from the brink of death.

But because of the Demon Emperor’s spirit attack, which had been too violent and overbearing, Shi Lan still remained unconscious.

Compared with her body, Shi Lan’s soul was far too weak. She had not yet touched the realm of cultivating the soul.

Wuxu’s incarnation stood beside Shi Lan for a full seven days and nights before finally dispersing. Most of the Heaven-Men around them gradually departed, but the demon race did not retreat because of the Demon Emperor’s death. They still attacked madly with no fear of death.

The instant Wuxu’s incarnation dispersed, Yan Mobei shifted space and sent Shi Lan back to the Shi Residence. In her current state, all Shi Lan could do was recuperate quietly.

When Su Lanyue saw Shi Lan’s miserable condition, she could not stop her tears at all. But because she did not know what the battle situation at the front line was, she dared not send word to Shi Tianlu. She could only hold on day and night without rest, forcing herself to manage the affairs of the residence.

…

Time flew by. Day after day passed, and in the blink of an eye, half a year had gone by. Yet Shi Lan still showed no sign of waking.

Shi Tianlu had long since received the news. He had returned several times whenever he could spare the time, and each time he saw the white strands mixed into Shi Lan’s black hair, he felt terrible inside and could not put it behind him for a very long time.

He had all but exhausted the battle merit he had accumulated, exchanging it at the Battle Merit Hall for all kinds of heavenly materials and earthly treasures that could prolong life, hoping to wake Shi Lan, but in the end none of it had any effect.

Over the past half year, quite a few people had come to see Shi Lan.

Yan Mobei, Yue Xiuwen, Jiyun, Bai Weiyang, and those several dozen Heaven-Man mighty experts had all visited. Aside from Yan Mobei and a few others, who were truly concerned for Shi Lan’s safety, most of the rest were interested in the secrets she carried.

Shi Lan’s experiences from her previous journey into the Boundless Demon Domain were no longer a secret. The inheritance of a Sword Sovereign and a Sovereign Weapon, either one alone was enough to shake a Human Emperor’s Dao heart, let alone that of these Heaven-Men.

But whatever their reasons, Shi Lan deserved immense credit for killing that Demon Emperor.

During those six months, Shi Feng had passed by the Shi Residence many times. He already knew that Shi Lan had been gravely wounded and left hovering between life and death, and his feelings were mixed. The Shi Residence was no longer a place one could enter at will. After several of his calling cards were refused, he could only give up in despondence.

Apart from these people, a few of Shi Lan’s old acquaintances also came from time to time: Lei Wuji and Shen Tianlan of Sky Thunder Hall, and Lin Yusheng of Taixu Academy.

When Lin Yusheng came, he brought Lin Fan with him. He himself had not particularly wanted to come. Mainly, it was Lin Fan who wanted to see Shi Lan. In the end, however, Lin Fan still never got to see her.

Shi Lan’s room had practically become a forbidden zone within the Shi Residence. Absolutely no one was allowed to disturb it, no matter who came calling.

…

Knock, knock, knock…

Just after dawn, the main gate of the Shi Residence was knocked upon.

The servant guarding the gate was no longer surprised by such visits. He opened the gate, but the moment he saw who stood outside, he could not help feeling startled.

Standing outside the gate was a young monk in white robes, no more than fifteen or sixteen.

“Master, what business brings you here?”

The servant did not show the slightest contempt because of the monk’s age. In Xianwu City these days, all sorts of gods and monsters were passing through, and appearance alone told one nothing of a person’s depth.

“This poor monk is Wuya. There is a distinguished guest in this residence who has affinity with my Buddha…”

The young monk in white smiled, making one feel as if bathed in a spring breeze and instinctively well-disposed toward him.

“The distinguished guest you speak of is…?”

“This poor monk has crossed paths once before with Miss Shi Lan.”

“Please wait a moment.”

The servant hesitated briefly, but still turned and went to report the matter.

…

Wuya was quickly ushered inside and led all the way to the reception hall.

In half a year, Su Lanyue had grown much more haggard, and she looked weighed down by worry. After greeting Wuya with a few polite words, she asked directly for his purpose in coming, clearly having no mind for prolonged conversation.

“Miss Shi Lan’s long sleep should be due to injury to her spirit. This poor monk has a volume of Buddhist scripture that can warm the spirit and nourish the soul.”

Wuya still wore a smile, calm and unhurried.

“Master, to be honest with you, I’ve already tried no one knows how many methods over the past six months, but…”

Su Lanyue shook her head slightly, her brows tightly knit. Over the past half year, she had tried every kind of secret art for nourishing the soul, whether Buddhist scriptures, Daoist texts, heavenly materials and earthly treasures, or even some strange unorthodox remedies, but the results had been deeply disappointing.

Wuya did not mind in the least. He sat down cross-legged directly in the hall. Faint Buddha-light appeared behind his head, and waves of Brahmic chanting echoed through the hall, cleansing the heart and soul.
