Volume 1, Chapter 285 – Intervention

The strange look on Lin Mo’s face made Ning An avert her gaze uneasily.

Looking at the several corpses in the alley, all dead in bizarre ways, the memories of last night began to return.

Ning An’s heart suddenly clenched, and her legs went weak.

She… seemed to have killed someone…

…

The experience of repeated cycles had long since warped Lin Mo’s mental resilience into something abnormal. In the span of a finger snap, he had already adjusted his state of mind and brought his expression back under control.

The fact that Ning An had not died according to the usual pattern did not mean he now had a chance to break free from the cycle.

Across all those countless loops, he would always encounter a few special “people.”

These “people” occupied the bodies of those he knew or did not know, approached him with all sorts of motives, and in the end all wanted to get something from him. Between him and these people, there had been countless entanglements and disturbances.

Later on, most of the people who came with ulterior motives died by his hand.

And as for the Ning An before him now, whether she was truly herself was hard to say.

Though countless thoughts flashed through his mind, Lin Mo’s face did not change in the slightest.

After standing there blankly for a moment, Ning An came back to herself. She instinctively fumbled over her body a few times, found nothing, and then began searching the ground.

After finding her phone in a corner, her first reaction was no longer to call the police, but to call her parents for help.

The phone showed more than thirty missed calls and messages.

Some were from Qin Yinhua, and some were from Ning Kangping.

After hesitating for a moment, Ning An called her father.

…

When Ning An failed to return home all night, Qin Yinhua and Ning Kangping had been frantic with worry. Ning Kangping first tried to track Ning An’s phone, but the location signal was being disturbed by some inexplicable magnetic field, and there was no way to find her.

After that, the only thing he could do was pull strings and have several hundred police officers mobilized to search everywhere for Ning An’s whereabouts.

But the route Lin Mo had taken was far too remote, and there was no surveillance there at all. It was also a district awaiting development. They searched for most of the night and found nothing.

…

Less than ten minutes after receiving Ning An’s call, Ning Kangping arrived at the scene with people in tow.

The grim state of the scene made Ning Kangping’s heart tighten, and only after confirming that Ning An was safe and unharmed did he finally let out a long breath.

Under police questioning, Lin Mo also looked shaken and frightened. He stammered for a long time without saying anything useful.

Ning An, meanwhile, gave only a simple statement before being taken straight home by Ning Kangping.

The moment she saw Ning An, Qin Yinhua threw her arms around her and would not let go. Her face was full of self-reproach. If something had really happened to Ning An last night, she would never have been able to forgive herself for the rest of her life.

Nothing was more important than her precious daughter.

Ning Kangping had already told her the rough outline over the phone. She did not dare imagine what Ning An had actually gone through the previous night.

Hidden deep within Ning An’s sea of consciousness, Shi Lan felt that sincere love and care, and a faint ripple stirred in her heart.

For some reason, she suddenly wanted to go back to the Lingyang Realm.

After returning home and calming down somewhat, Ning An hesitated again and again before leaving out some details and confessing part of what had happened the previous night to her parents.

Including the fact that she had killed someone.

At first, Ning Kangping and Qin Yinhua simply did not believe what Ning An was saying. After all, though Ning An was not exactly weak and helpless, killing someone was still something completely beyond association with her.

But after seeing with their own eyes how effortlessly their daughter turned the wok at home into a flat sheet of iron, they had no choice but to believe her.

The fact that Ning An had killed someone was a tremendous shock to both of them. Even Ning Kangping, who had seen his share of storms, sat in a daze on the sofa for a full hour before recovering.

“Forget this ever happened. In a couple of days, let your mother take you out somewhere to relax. Pretend none of this happened. I’ll handle the rest.”

After throwing down those words, Ning Kangping hurried out the door without even sparing a moment to rest his body, exhausted from being up all night.

…

The three corpses from the scene were hauled back to the police station, and the autopsy reports were soon placed on the desk of criminal investigation captain Deng Yisi.

“Multiple compound fractures throughout the body, skull shattered, tissue contusions…”

“Compound fracture of the sternum, all ribs broken…”

“Right arm fractured, extensive tearing of the upper body musculature…”

Looking at the three autopsy reports, Deng Yisi frowned slightly. Her clear black-and-white eyes were full of doubt. Injuries like these did not look like something human strength alone could have caused.

Take the one with all the ribs broken, for example. Even in a normal traffic accident, being hit by a truck would only leave injuries about this severe.

Her gaze swept over the statements taken at the scene and the personal information of those present, then fixed on Lin Mo’s photo.

Neither Lin Mo’s nor Ning An’s statement showed any obvious problems, but Deng Yisi found herself inexplicably preoccupied with Lin Mo. She always felt there was something off about him.

As for Ning An, Deng Yisi dismissed her outright. A young girl could not possibly inflict such injuries on several grown men.

Knock… knock-knock…

There was a knock at the door.

“Come in.”

Deng Yisi did not even lift her head, still staring at the documents in front of her.

“Yisi, drop this case here.”

A broad hand pressed down on the documents in front of Deng Yisi. The calluses at the base of the thumb were thick, clearly from years of handling firearms.

Deng Yisi looked up, and the doubt in her eyes turned to shock.

Standing in front of her desk was a middle-aged man nearing fifty. It was Director Cheng Wu.

What truly surprised her, however, were the two young people standing behind Cheng Wu.

One man and one woman, both around twenty-five, dressed in uniforms unfamiliar to her, yet somehow giving off an inexplicable sense of danger.

“Why?”

“The National Security Bureau is taking over this case.”

As Cheng Wu spoke, he looked toward the two people behind him.

The woman took out an identification booklet and placed it in front of Deng Yisi, while at the same time taking all of the documents from the desk.

“The National Security Bureau…”

Deng Yisi froze after glancing at the credentials. Before she could react, they were already taken back.

“We’re taking the bodies.”

With that, the two of them left the office.

“Director Cheng, this… isn’t appropriate, is it…?”

Deng Yisi was still somewhat dazed even now.

“This case is already outside our authority. Just treat it as though it never happened.”

Cheng Wu shook his head slightly and followed the other two out of the office.

Deng Yisi was only twenty-four this year, yet she had already attained the rank of third-class police superintendent. Combined with her first-rate looks and figure, she was the undisputed police beauty of the station. Rumor had it that her family background was anything but simple, perhaps even tied to the military.

Because of that, even Cheng Wu would often give Deng Yisi a bit of face.

But today, Cheng Wu was not on her side.

After all, they were dealing with the National Security Bureau. That represented power at the level of the state itself. Once the National Security Bureau stepped in, it meant this was no longer something they could handle.

After thinking for a while, Deng Yisi rose and left the office, taking the unprecedented step of leaving work early. She got into her car and drove toward Lin Mo’s residence.

The National Security Bureau’s intervention only made her even more interested in the truth hidden behind this case.
