Volume 1, Chapter 40 – Medical Hall
Recalling the battle earlier, a wave of unwillingness surged up in Shi Feng’s heart. He was still too weak. If he were strong enough, Shi Lan would never be in such a situation.
Shi Feng’s body was far too weak at the moment. After thinking for a while, he drifted back into an exhausted sleep.
Shi Lan was woken by Shi Feng’s movement. Worried something else might happen in the night, he didn’t go back to sleep, and instead began cultivating the Jade Tempering Art.
The moment he circulated the Jade Tempering Art, Shi Lan realized his cultivation had already reached the seventh stage of the Body Tempering Realm.
He was puzzled for a while, then thought it through. Even if Lunhui had only borrowed his body for a short time, that terrifying energy had still lingered in his body. It was only reasonable that it had torn through the bottleneck of the seventh stage of the Body Tempering Realm.
He kept watch the whole night until dawn.
As the sky was just turning light, Shi Lan put out the fire and began packing the bundle. When he walked over to Shi Feng’s side and touched his arm, he flinched, then reached out to feel Shi Feng’s forehead. It was burning hot.
Clearly, the fever had started.
“Lunhui, can you help bring down his fever?”
“No way. Keeping him alive is already the limit of what I can do.”
Hearing this, Shi Lan sped up his movements. He hastily packed everything up, hoisted Shi Feng onto his back, and hurried out of the cave.
Shi Lan quickened his pace and soon made it out of the mountains. Once he hit the plains, the road became much easier to walk, and his speed increased again.
Finally, at sunset, Shi Lan reached that city.

The city was called Twin Moon City. It wasn’t very large, about the same scale as Tenglong City. At the gates stood demon-suppressing soldiers clad in black armor.
After being questioned, he entered the city. Shi Lan grabbed a few passersby to ask for directions, then carried Shi Feng to a medical hall.
A long line stretched out before the medical hall. The injured were all covered in claw marks and bite wounds, most of them ordinary folk.
Shi Lan glanced at the line that nearly reached the street corner, then felt the ever-increasing heat from the back of the person on his shoulders. He grew anxious. If he queued up and waited, it’d be far too late by the time they got in.
A high fever that doesn’t break for too long can fry a person’s brain.
“Sorry, please let me through.”
“Let me get past, please.”
Shi Lan squeezed through the crowd with great difficulty and finally made it to the entrance of the medical hall.
“What are you doing? Cutting in line? Get to the back!” At the door, the line had just reached a burly man in his thirties. Seeing Shi Lan stride straight toward the entrance, he barked at him.
“Big brother, please, I’m begging you. The one on my back has a fever and it’s been going for a whole day. If he doesn’t see a doctor soon, I’m afraid he won’t make it. Let me go in and ask the physician first, alright?” Shi Lan gave him a fawning smile.
The burly man pointed at his own bandaged arm. “Who isn’t in a hurry coming here? If everyone did what you’re doing, how would anyone else ever get their turn?”
“Why not let this young man go in first? Everyone in the back just has flesh wounds. Waiting a bit won’t be a problem.” An old man in his sixties behind the burly man spoke up.
“What’s it got to do with you?” The burly man glared at the old man. The old man’s lips moved, but in the end he said nothing more.

“Big brother, please, do me this favor.” Not wanting any trouble, Shi Lan took an ingot of silver from his bundle and held it out to the burly man.
The burly man’s eyes lit up. He took the silver and weighed it in his hand, then stuffed it into his shirt—but his feet didn’t move at all. He looked left and right, occasionally tilting his head back to look at the sky.
Seeing this reaction, a chill flashed through Shi Lan’s eyes. He pulled out another ingot of silver from the bundle and handed it over.
The burly man accepted the silver with a satisfied grin and stepped aside, opening up a small path.
Shi Lan took two steps forward with Shi Feng on his back and was just about to enter when the burly man blocked him again.
“What do you mean by this?” Shi Lan’s voice went cold.
“Only one person can go in,” the burly man said with a leering smile, holding up a finger.
Three times was the limit. What little patience Shi Lan had left was completely used up.
“Bang—”
The long case in Shi Lan’s hand crashed to the ground. The bluestone-paved street instantly cracked like a spiderweb.
“Say that again?” Shi Lan stared at the burly man as he spoke.
The burly man looked at the web of cracks all over the ground, swallowed hard, and instinctively took two steps back.

“Please, go right in, go right in.” Coming back to his senses, the burly man let out two dry laughs, bowing and scraping as he made way, and at the same time took the silver out of his shirt and held it out to Shi Lan.
Shi Lan had no time to fuss with him. He took back the silver and pushed the door open into the medical hall.
There were still several injured people inside, clutching their wounds and groaning in pain. The place was rather noisy.
In the center of the hall stood a wooden table. Behind it sat an old man in his seventies with a goatee, who was bandaging the wound of a middle-aged man in his forties.
Beside the old man stood a girl of thirteen or fourteen. She wore a white dress, her hair done up in twin buns. Her brows and eyes were bright and lively; her features were still a little childish, but she was already quite a pretty little thing.
The old man looked up and saw Shi Lan come in carrying someone. His expression changed slightly. He leaned over and murmured something to the girl beside him, then handed over the bandaging work to her, walked around the table, and came over to greet them.
“What’s the patient’s condition?” The old man walked up to Shi Lan, asking as he guided him over to a simple wooden bed set to the side.
Shi Lan helped Shi Feng lie down and answered, “He’s running a fever. It’s been going on for a whole day.”
The old man reached out and took Shi Feng’s pulse. As he felt the pulse, the slight furrow in his brow tightened further and further.
After a while, he withdrew his hand with a sigh and looked at Shi Lan. “Forgive my bluntness, but you should prepare for the worst.”
Shi Lan’s face changed. “Sir, what do you mean?”
“His five viscera are damaged, his breastbone shattered. He’s relying solely on some unknown qi to cling to life. Unless you have one of those legendary miraculous pills that can bring the dead back to life and regrow flesh on bone, even immortals wouldn’t be able to save him.” The old man shook his head.
Shi Lan was silent for a moment, then said, “Sir, could I trouble you to at least bring his fever down first?”

“I’ll prescribe him some medicine to clear internal heat and see if it helps. If anything goes wrong, you mustn’t blame my medical hall.”
“Of course,” Shi Lan nodded.
The old man gave a slight nod, then turned his head toward the girl standing by the wooden table. “Yue’er, come here.”
The girl hurried over in a few quick steps. “Grandpa, what is it?”
“Rebandage this young man’s wounds,” the old man said, pointing at Shi Lan.
Shi Lan paused, then lowered his head to look at the blood-soaked bandage on his arm. Realizing what the old man meant, he quickly thanked him.
The girl smiled at Shi Lan. “Come with me.” With that, she walked back toward the wooden table.
Shi Lan followed her over and sat down by the table. The girl first went into the back room to get a basin of clean water, then began untying the bandage on his arm.
When all the bandages were off and she saw the ghastly wound, deep enough to see the bone, the girl drew in a soft breath. Looking at Shi Lan’s calm expression, she asked in surprise, “Doesn’t it hurt?”
“It hurts a lot,” Shi Lan answered honestly.
“Then why don’t you scream?” the girl asked, both curious and amazed, as she began cleaning the wound.
