Peach-Orange! – Chapter 403 – A Close Call

As soon as the words were spoken, Chi Xiaocheng and Su Tao instantly became alert.

The enemy was in the dark, while they were exposed.

They were clearly well-prepared.

Especially Chi Xiaocheng, who was on high alert!

Her vigilance skill had never failed before. If anyone harbored hostility toward her (counting even a stray cat or dog on the street), her skill would provide feedback.

But now, apart from the suited man on the second floor who had already been injured by the exploding chair, she couldn’t sense a second person’s presence!

Where were they?

Or were they going to blow up the entire set like in the movies?

This escape room was underground, after all!

Chi Xiaocheng held her breath and grabbed another fruit knife she had bought from the system shop.

Three seconds passed….

Ten seconds passed….

Half a minute passed….

Nothing happened in the entire castle.

The simulated cawing of crows, originally meant to enhance the horror atmosphere, now felt especially awkward.

Not only Su Tao and Chi Xiaocheng, but even the suited man was stunned.

He glanced at his watch and gave them an awkward smile. “Uh… there might be a slight delay. Could you wait a moment?”

Wait?

Su Tao was no fool. Seemingly confirming that something had indeed gone wrong, she didn’t wait for the suited man to say another word before hurling another chair at him.

Seeing this, the suited man instinctively dodged to the side in a panic.

The chair shot past like a cannonball and smashed into the bookshelf behind him.

Without exaggeration, if that had hit him, he would’ve been done for, right?

The suited man scrambled to his feet again, still trying to do something.

Just then, a gray cloth behind him suddenly twitched, and a staff member in a blood-stained costume leaped out.

“Quick! I got him! Guys, help!”

From all directions of the previously silent castle, several staff members rushed out.

In a flash, they subdued the burly suited man.

It happened so fast and so unexpectedly that Su Tao and Chi Xiaocheng were left dumbfounded.

A few more security guards ran over. “Are you two alright?”

Su Tao froze for a moment before hurriedly saying, “They have another accomplice! Be careful!”

“Don’t worry,” the security captain nodded solemnly. “We’ll investigate thoroughly. For your safety, it’s best if you leave first.”

“But with you here, isn’t it safe now?” Chi Xiaocheng asked blankly. “Besides, I want to know what’s going on. Why is he targeting us?”

After some hesitation, the security captain, considering they were premium VIP guests and that more guards were arriving, relented. “Alright… but don’t wander off. We need to sweep the area for any remaining threats.”

“Got it.”

The captain gave a slight nod and spoke into his walkie-talkie.

Accidents weren’t uncommon in these escape rooms. When the castle’s surveillance system mysteriously failed earlier, they had already sent people to check.

They found it was a wiring issue but remained cautious.

Their initial hesitation was partly because Su Tao’s violent actions made them fear collateral damage, and partly because they weren’t sure where the suited man’s accomplice was hiding.

Let’s just say this was the NPCs’ most useful moment yet.

Due to the incident, the entire escape room had to be shut down. Staff members filed out, followed by the security team.

After half an hour of searching, they confirmed that only the captured suited man was present.

Perhaps after receiving some notification, the security captain became especially respectful toward Su Tao and Chi Xiaocheng. He said, “Ladies, we deeply apologize for this incident. The amusement park will compensate you later. Please don’t refuse.”

Then, he turned to the suited man, who was tied up and pinned under a chair. “If you have any questions for him, feel free to ask. Should we step away?”

Chi Xiaocheng looked at the captain and asked softly, “Did Dongfang Yang contact you earlier?”

The captain replied, “I can’t reach Young Master Dongfang directly. My superior informed me.”

At the mention of Dongfang Yang, Chi Xiaocheng understood everything.

So, Dongfang Yang had indeed given the order.

The two approached the suited man, who looked dejected. After glancing at them, he said flatly, “You must have a lot of questions. I’ll tell you everything, but I have one condition!”

Su Tao found it amusing that this man, who had tried to harm her, was now being cooperative. She raised an eyebrow. “What’s your condition?”

The suited man’s expression darkened. “I need to make a call. I want to know where my so-called partner is and why he didn’t follow the plan!”

“Fine.”

Su Tao nodded at the security captain, who then took out the phone confiscated from the suited man. “What’s the password?”

“Six zeros. There’s a contact named ‘Number Ten.’ Call him.”

The captain did as instructed but remained cautious, signaling others to restrain the suited man if he tried anything.

The phone rang for ten seconds before it was finally answered.

“Hello?”

The suited man’s voice was low. “Where the hell are you? Why didn’t you follow the plan? If something went wrong, you should’ve told me sooner!”

The voice on the other end replied impatiently, “What’s the point of arguing over a few thousand a month? We were only supposed to monitor those two, but then out of nowhere, we’re told to kill them. Do you know that Su Tao can punch through steel plates?”

As soon as the words were spoken, everyone turned to stare at Su Tao.

Su Tao gave an awkward smile.

Chi Xiaocheng quickly explained, “Don’t misunderstand. Tao-Tao is just as delicate as I am. Let’s keep listening.”

The voice on the phone continued, “That Chu Lingfeng is some country bumpkin who doesn’t know how things work. He thinks he can boss us around and send us to our deaths? No way!

“If you want to do it, go ahead. I’m not risking my life for this.”

The call ended.

The suited man’s eyes lost their light.

He could accept failure.

But betrayal was another matter.

With a sigh, he spilled everything.

Chu Lingfeng had returned to Jiuzhou City a week ago.

He’d brought another mysterious person with him.

That person had only ordered them to monitor the two, but Chu Lingfeng had taken it upon himself to demand Su Tao’s death while sparing Chi Xiaocheng.

Their original mission was simply to observe and report during the amusement park visit.

But because of Chu Lingfeng’s orders, the plan changed.

He had carried out the task, but his partner refused to risk his life for Chu Lingfeng.

It was abrupt, yet made perfect sense.

No amount of money was worth dying for.

But… Chu Lingfeng had brought back a mysterious figure?

Had he really gained influence in the capital?

Chi Xiaocheng silently studied the suited man, unaware of the tension creeping into Su Tao’s expression.
