Cannon Fodder – Chapter 66 – Brother’s Return
Cannon Fodder – Chapter 66 – Brother’s Return
The night was as dark as ink. Just as Chi Xiaocheng was worrying about the psychologist matter, over in Lizhi City, Chi Song had already purchased a high-speed train ticket back to Jiuzhou City.
“Brother Long, I came to say goodbye.”
Chi Song walked into the hall wearing a jacket, shaking the snowflakes off his head. His scar-covered face looked somewhat unsettling.
Brother Long had only one ear, and like Chi Song, his face was also covered in scars.
He turned to look at Chi Song and handed him a cigarette. “Really leaving? To be honest, after this job, I was planning to promote you to the fourth hall. Leaving like this might draw criticism from others.”
Chi Song took the cigarette and reached for his lighter when Brother Long offered him a light instead.
He exhaled a puff of smoke. “Brother Long, to be honest, I don’t care about that position. You know I’ve been working hard here for my little sister. She usually doesn’t tell me when she’s in trouble, but this is the first time she’s asked for my help. As her brother, I have to go back.”
His fierce face broke into a simple, honest smile. “Years ago, I wronged my parents, cut ties with them, and ran away to join the underworld. She’s the only sister I have left.”
“That makes sense.” Brother Long flicked his cigarette. “How long will you be gone?”
“Not sure. I should be back within half a month.” Chi Song smiled. “Let Xiao Sixi take my position. He’s clever. But there’s one thing you should watch out for, Brother Long.”
Chi Song’s expression turned serious. “Remember that batch of underground businesses run by the Ye family we took down last time? Their hands haven’t retracted yet. Recently, someone surnamed Si contacted me and gave me a lot of information about that Ye family.”
Brother Long raised an eyebrow. “Trying to use us as their weapon?”

Chi Song nodded. “Probably. These Ye people were sent by that Ye Liang. Whether to go all the way is up to you, Brother Long.”
Brother Long sneered. “In Lizhi City, even a tiger has to crouch. Even if we agree, other gangs won’t just watch their share get taken. Just go back. Don’t worry about this.”
“Alright.” Chi Song nodded. “I’ll take ten men with me. If anything comes up, I’ll contact you.”
“Leaving this late?”
“Yeah, I’ve already bought the train ticket.”
Brother Long looked at Chi Song in surprise. “Songzi, haven’t I treated you well these past two years? With the millions you’ve made, can’t you even afford a car?”
Chi Song scratched his head awkwardly. “My little sister has always been weak. She suffered some psychological trauma years ago. Remember that skilled doctor we met in my hometown? He said the treatment would cost a lot. The money I made these past two years went to him for her treatment.”
Brother Long frowned. “What kind of injury costs millions? Are you sure you weren’t scammed?”
“Probably not. He often updates me on her condition and sends photos. Last time I video-called her, she looked much better.”
“Besides, money is meant to be spent. If she’s doing well, then it’s worth it. No big deal.”
“Fine.” Seeing this, Brother Long didn’t press further. Instead, he picked up a set of keys from the table and tossed them over. “Also, you’re a boss now. You have plenty of underlings. What kind of boss takes the high-speed train home with his men?”
“Take my car. And have your men pick up two more. No rush to come back. Spend more time with your sister.”

“Got it. Thanks, Brother Long!”
“What’s there to thank? If you hadn’t taken that knife for me back then, I’d have lost more than just an ear. Now scram. If you’re in a hurry, don’t stand here getting sentimental with me.”
After sending Chi Song off, Brother Long lit another cigarette and knocked on the table.
Soon, another underling entered. “Brother Long, any orders?”
“Send someone to check out the doctor Chi Song’s been contacting. See what’s going on there. Also, aren’t there a few disabled guys in the gang who keep saying they want something to do?”
“Yes.” The underling nodded. “You assigned them to watch the warehouse, but they said it’s too boring. They want to keep working like Deputy Hall Master Chi, missing limbs or not.”
“Stubborn mules.” Brother Long flicked his ash. “Send them to Chi Song’s hometown. Have them find some land to farm and retire. Tell them their mission is to protect Chi Song’s parents. Now go.”
With that, Brother Long took another drag and looked out the window, his expression heavy.
“Jiuzhou City is the Ye family’s stronghold… This won’t be easy.”
Time passed slowly. After a seven-hour journey, Chi Song and his ten underlings drove into Jiuzhou City.
It was already 3 a.m. The three underlings in Chi Song’s car were tired but still somewhat excited.
“Brother Song, we’ll be at your place in half an hour. Your sister’s name is Chengzi, right? Can I get her to call me ‘brother’ too?”

The driver, a dark-skinned man, was in a good mood.
Chi Song joked, “Lao Hei, if you dare have any ideas about my little sister, I’ll break your legs.”
“Hey, come on.” Liang Hei shrugged. “We’re brothers, so your sister is my sister too. I’m getting old with no family. Probably won’t ever get a wife. Can’t you fulfill my small wish of hearing our sister call me ‘brother’?”
“Get lost. At your age, you’re more like an uncle.”
“I’m only 28! What uncle? I’m still young!”
Chi Song turned serious. “Listen up. If you really meet her, don’t mention the gang, got it? You guys are just construction workers I met on the job.
“But speaking of which, it’s been almost three years since I last saw her. I wonder how she’s doing. Hope she doesn’t mind having a cripple for a brother.”
As they chatted, they soon arrived at the neighborhood gate.
Since Brother Long gave him this apartment, Chi Song hadn’t stayed there even once. He just asked Chi Xiaocheng to keep a room for him with some basic necessities, waiting for his return.
Who knew it would take this long?
“Brother Song, we’ll head to the hotel first.”
“Wait!”

Chi Song narrowed his eyes in the car and stopped Liang Hei from getting out.
Noticing Chi Song’s serious expression, Liang Hei flashed the headlights twice. The doors of the other two cars, which had just opened, closed again.
“We’re being watched.”
Chi Song turned his head toward two burly men eating late-night snacks at a roadside stall not far away.
Across the street, someone wrapped in a padded coat was sleeping on a bench.
Amateurs. Their eyes and heads kept glancing this way.
Liang Hei’s voice lowered. “Only three visible. They looked over as soon as we arrived. Getting targeted this fast after just arriving in Jiuzhou?”
“They’re targeting my little sister!”
Chi Song’s face darkened. He thought Chi Xiaocheng’s “being bullied” meant some local thugs bothering her.
But the situation was far worse than he imagined.
“Brother Song, what’s the plan?”
