Volume 3, Chapter 5 – The Adventurers of Another World

There was no way Yisi could have imagined Camilla would shout “Meteor Fall.” Yisi had only ever used that spell once, when facing the Grand Knight Commander’s interrogation in Niru City.

Although “Meteor Fall” was only a 20th-tier spell, if it were to land at such close range, it would engulf not only the adventurers near the slimes but even their own carriage.

Well, the people of this world don’t know what tier of magic “Meteor Fall” is anyway. I’ll just substitute it with another spell.

With no time to spare, Yisi didn’t overthink it. She directly summoned giant rocks above the giant slimes’ heads and let them free-fall. Considering that annihilating all the slimes at once might make the adventurers suspicious of Camilla’s power, Yisi deliberately left two of them alive.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

Three greyish-white boulders successively pierced through the slimes’ bodies. The HP of three slimes instantly dropped to zero, splashing pale green body fluids everywhere. The mutated red giant slime, in particular, had its internal liquid ignite like gasoline, leaving patches of burning flames where it splattered on the ground. If Yisi hadn’t calculated the distance between the slimes and the adventurers beforehand, the adventurers would now be rolling on the ground trying to extinguish the fire on their bodies.

Hearing the loud explosions behind them, the fleeing adventurers subconsciously looked back, then one by one, they stopped in their tracks. Their gazes shifted between the vanquished slimes and Camilla on the carriage roof, and for a moment, they stood frozen in place.

Yisi took the opportunity to pull her head back inside the carriage and spoke to Camilla on the roof in a voice the adventurers couldn’t hear.

“Camilla, tell them not to just stand there. Go take care of the remaining two slimes. Their swallowed companions aren’t dead yet.”

“O-okay, Onee-sama.” Camilla, who had also been stunned, came to her senses. After clearing her throat, she shouted to the adventurers in a rather exaggerated tone, “Adventurers! go and defeat the remaining two slimes!”

The lead adventurer was the first to react.

“We can’t outrun these slimes! The esteemed spellcaster has already dealt with the trickiest part. The rest of the battle is ours!”

“Ooooh! The flame slime is dead! There are only two normal slimes left!”

“Let’s get ’em!”

“Avenge our fallen brothers!”

In a complete reversal of their earlier wretched state, the adventurers, as if injected with adrenaline, raised their various weapons and charged towards the giant slimes with a roar.

Meanwhile, inside the carriage, Yisi breathed a sigh of relief. At first, she was worried that a simple spell like summoning falling rocks wouldn’t look anything like “Meteor Fall,” but thankfully, none of the adventurers had been looking back at the slimes at the time, so she had managed to bluff her way through.

Mary, who was driving the carriage, ducked in from the driver’s seat.

“Master, should we keep moving forward?”

“No need. Mary, go and help the adventurers deal with the slimes.”

The two giant slimes were level 9 and level 10, respectively. Although the adventurers were numerous, their average level wasn’t even 5. A single misstep could easily cause their battle line to collapse. Sending Mary to help would both solve the problem and give Mary some experience. Right now, what Mary lacked most was practical combat experience.

“Yes~”

Unlike her usual seriousness when on a mission, Mary’s right purple eye was filled with eagerness. Her strength had improved significantly since her time at the Margaret Tavern.

“Onee-sama, please allow me to join the battle as well.”

“Mhm, you can go too, Camilla.”

Even though she always likes to tease Mary in daily life, she actually cares a lot about her, huh?

Unable to see the situation outside, Yisi tilted her head.

“Well, if Camilla is participating, then there’s nothing to worry about. I should get dressed first.”

However, by the time Yisi had put on her black formal dress and stepped out of the carriage, the reality was the complete opposite of what she had imagined. The adventurers were at a disadvantage.

Because the giant slimes hid their magic cores in the deepest part of their bodies, combined with their enormous size, a typical spear couldn’t reach the core from a safe distance. The adventurers also lacked equipment like bows and arrows, leaving them with no choice but to adopt a hit-and-run strategy where they mostly just got hit.

The slimes, however, could use their freely morphing bodies to extend mucus tentacles in multiple directions at once. Although they couldn’t inflict cutting wounds on the adventurers, each blow was equivalent to a full-power charge from a bull. If an adventurer was so much as grazed by a tentacle, they would be sent flying.

“Is there not a single spellcaster among these adventurers…?”

Looking closely, one could see that this group of adventurers didn’t even have decent equipment. Their armor consisted only of vests stitched from animal hides, and their weapons were mostly wooden spears with iron tips. Most of them were even wearing straw sandals that exposed their toes.

“I’ve heard that the survival conditions for novice adventurers are harsh, but this is too harsh.”

If she were wearing such gear, she definitely wouldn’t dare go near a forest.

Yisi somewhat understood why the levels of people in this world were generally low. The death rate for adventuring must be too high, leading to no one daring to hunt monsters on a large scale.

“Don’t get entangled with it! Cut off its tentacles when it attacks! As long as we keep chipping away at its body, it will eventually expose its magic core!”

The young adventurer leader commanded the disorganized novices, surrounding the level 9 giant slime. From Yisi’s Omniscient Map, she could see that these novices didn’t belong to the same party. The reason the young adventurer could command them was purely due to his high leadership skill.

Seemingly identifying the shouting young adventurer as the group’s center, the giant slime chose to attack him first. It extended three translucent, pale green tentacles from three different directions, preparing to envelop him. But the young adventurer’s equipment was clearly a cut above the others. He showed no panic in the face of the attack, instead swinging his longsword decisively.

“[Cross Slash!]”

His MP dropped by 5 points. The young adventurer swung his sword horizontally and vertically in a split second, instantly severing the three tentacles lunging at him. They fell to the ground with a splash.

“Although that looked impressive, it didn’t actually do much…”

Because he swung his sword too early, the tentacles the young adventurer cut off were only the length of an adult’s forearm. If he had waited for the tentacles to extend to their maximum reach before cutting them with magic, he could have inflicted much more damage on the giant slime.

“Well, I can’t demand that novice adventurers use techniques from a game. In reality, just staying alive is an achievement.”

However, if his goal was to become stronger, this young adventurer needed to work much harder.

Yisi, standing near the carriage, turned her gaze to the other side. Compared to the level 9 slime surrounded by a dozen adventurers, the level 10 giant slime being handled by Camilla and Mary was in a much worse state. Of course, they weren’t the only ones fighting it; two sharp-eyed, veteran adventurers were with them. Their levels were also higher than the others, at level 5 and level 6, respectively.

“A combination of a tank, a mage, and two rangers, huh? I feel like the front line is too thin.”

In ‘Ragnarøk,’ a proper team composition should be a warrior, a tank, a mage, an archer, and a healer. While these roles could be substituted by other classes like sorcerers, beast tamers, warlocks, assassins, and other special classes, the general categories had to be present.

Of course, the current setup was more than enough to deal with a slime.

“Little lass, protect the mage!” one of the veteran adventurers shouted.

Mary, who was defending against a tentacle attack, immediately snapped to attention. She quickly broke free from the tentacle’s entanglement and leaped in front of Camilla. Immediately after, the slime’s tentacle attack reached them.

The blow, whistling through the air, looked as if it could pierce a human body.

“Hiyah!”

[Shield Counter-attack!]

However, when the tentacle slammed into the iron-plated oak shield, it was like a beast crashing into a city wall. The tentacle instantly lost its force. Mary seized the opportunity to knock the tentacle away with her shield, then swung her one-handed sword forward, severing the powerless appendage.

Meanwhile, the two veteran adventurers on the other side kept their distance from the giant slime, throwing rocks at it. The quivers on their backs were already empty, so they could only try to attract the slime’s attention by throwing stones.

“[□□□—Lightning Flash].”

Camilla’s chant finally ended. An orb wrapped in blue-purple electricity flew past Mary and straight towards the giant slime. Sensing the danger, the giant slime gave up its attack on the two veterans and instead extended all ten-plus of its tentacles towards Camilla, attempting to block the orb.

Then, the two made contact.

Tssss.

A brilliant flash erupted from the entire giant slime. Immediately after, an orange-red flame appeared on the ten tentacles it had extended. Although it lasted for less than a second, the slime seemed to enter a weakened state. Its tentacles retracted with abnormal slowness, and its body went limp, collapsing on the ground.

“Now! Cut off its tentacles! Its magic core is about to be exposed!”

Camilla’s shout prompted the two veteran adventurers to draw their short swords. After exchanging nods, they, along with Mary, quickly rushed towards the giant slime, cleanly cutting off its tentacles at the base. The slime, due to the ‘Paralysis’ effect from the ‘Lightning Flash’ spell, could only let itself be carved up by Mary and the two veterans.

Looks like they don’t need my help.

The thought had barely crossed her mind when the situation with the novice adventurer alliance changed.

“Uwaah!”

An adventurer, failing to dodge in time, was struck squarely in the chest by a slime tentacle. As he cried out in pain, he knocked over two of his companions who were part of the encirclement. The giant slime seized the opportunity to move towards the gap, preparing to devour the three fallen adventurers.

“[Cross Slash!]”

Because the team was too spread out and the incident happened on the opposite side from the young adventurer, he was too late to provide support. His only choice was to fiercely attack the giant slime’s body, attempting to save his comrades by drawing its attention. But the giant slime was completely unmoved. ‘Cross Slash’ could easily tear through its body, but the giant slime was simply too large. That level of damage could be regenerated in seconds; it couldn’t even reduce its HP.

If left alone, the three fallen novices would be devoured. Yisi took Gungnir from her inventory and used [Blink] to appear in a blind spot where the other novices wouldn’t see her. Then, at what looked like a normal speed, she ran towards the three novices and, just as the slime was about to succeed, used the shaft of Gungnir to fling them to safety.

“Look out!”

Just because Yisi knocked the adventurers away didn’t mean the slime’s body wouldn’t move towards her. Seeing the two-story-high slime about to swallow Yisi, the young adventurer shouted a warning, then gritted his teeth and pulled out another longsword. He combined the two swords into a cross shape in front of him, and a red flame ignited around his body.

“[Flame Cross Slash!]”

To Yisi’s surprise—she had expected another flashy but ineffective spell—the young adventurer used his twin swords to carve a path, charging recklessly into the giant slime’s body. As if receiving immense damage, a channel that could not be healed was seared through the giant slime’s interior by the fierce flames, and its HP dropped rapidly.

Unfortunately, just as the young adventurer reached the center of the giant slime’s body, the flames around him quickly dissipated as his magic ran out. He looked completely drained, barely able to stand by leaning on his swords.

But he had achieved his goal. Because its internal space was reduced, the giant slime’s body rapidly shrank and could no longer encompass Yisi. Thanks to this, Yisi canceled her prepared move to retreat.

Of course, if she just left him, the young adventurer would surely be enveloped within the giant slime’s body. While the other novices’ attention was focused on him, Yisi activated Gungnir, aiming for the side of the magic core within the giant slime.

Killing the slime here would be easy, but that would rob these novices of their experience. Yisi threw Gungnir, making it just graze the magic core. Like a billiard ball being struck, the core shot straight towards the incapacitated young adventurer in the collision.

The young adventurer seized the opportunity. Gritting his teeth, he forced his body to move. With a shout, he used his longswords for support and desperately grabbed the magic core that had fallen in front of him, severing its connection to the slime.

The giant slime stiffened for a moment.

Then.

Splat.

It melted into a pool of liquid.

All the adventurers fell silent. After about two seconds, someone murmured.

“We won…”

Then, the low murmur turned into a wave-like roar of post-survival euphoria.

“We won!”

“WE WON!”

The adventurers, who had been in despair, let out a shout that pierced the heavens.
