Volume 3, Chapter 12 – The Rioting Monsters

Camilla, who had also spotted the monsters, took out her magic staff from her storage magic.

“Onee-sama, what should we do?”

“Let’s use the carriage as cover for now and see how the soldiers handle it.”

Yisi could understand the soldiers’ actions of shutting the adventurers out. They were also trying to protect the entire city, afraid that they wouldn’t be able to close the gate in time and let the monsters slip in.

If one considered it that way, the next part of the script should be the soldiers on the city walls using magic and crossbows to repel the invading monsters. Ordinary monsters couldn’t possibly scale a wall over fifteen meters high; driving them away was just a matter of time.

Of course, her group would have to become the sacrifice to buy that time.

Yisi looked at the people trapped outside the gate while confirming the strength of the monsters.

Among the hundred or so monsters, nearly thirty were slimes. Apart from one monster called an ‘Evil Eye’ which was level 12, the rest were weak types below level 6 or 7. As for the people locked outside the gate, their total number didn’t exceed forty, and most of them were rookie adventurers like the ones she had traveled with.

This was definitely going to be a tough fight.

It would be better to help out secretly.

Yisi inconspicuously moved in front of the stern-faced Ainos and thumped him on the back, causing him to stagger.

“Ainos, get a grip. We have to protect ourselves until the soldiers on the wall take care of the monsters.”

Startled by Yisi’s sudden action, Ainos quickly came to his senses.

“Ah… you’re right. I was getting a little nervous.” After speaking, Ainos began shouting to organize the adventurers, “Merchants and travelers, get to the back! Warrior classes, form a defensive line at the front! Hold on until the city guards are free to help us!”

“Ooh!!”

Because Ainos had accumulated prestige during their previous actions, the initially panicked adventurers quickly followed his instructions. At first, Yisi was worried that these adventurers might be timid due to a lack of weapons, but fortunately, among those locked out was a weapon merchant’s caravan. With the weapons they provided, a fan-shaped defensive line facing outward was quickly formed outside the gate.

“But the defense is still too weak…”

Yisi frowned slightly.

There were too few vanguards among the adventurers, and the line had been forced to stretch too long, leaving a gap of two to three meters between each adventurer. When the two sides made contact, it would surely collapse in an instant. Considering that she would also be joining the battle, it was more appropriate to find a spot where she wouldn’t be noticed too much to exert her strength.

Without greeting Ainos, Yisi first squeezed into the area where the carriage was in the rear, then called Tiffany, who was still attached to the bottom of the carriage.

“Tiffany, could I trouble you to take on your human form?”

“Mm.”

Tiffany, in her slime form, first crawled from the bottom of the carriage into the compartment, then appeared before everyone as a little girl with fresh green twin-tails and narrow green eyes.

Currently, Tiffany hadn’t learned any combat skills, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t level up. Since participating in a battle was enough to gain experience, she naturally couldn’t let Tiffany miss this opportunity.

“Camilla, Mary, come with me to the flank.”

“Yes, Onee-sama.”

“I-I-I’ll go find my shield.”

As if about to bite her tongue, Mary scrambled into the carriage in a panic.

Soon, the four of them arrived at the left side of the fan-shaped defensive line. By this time, the monsters were less than five hundred meters from the city wall. Yisi could even hear the creaking of the hinges on the wall, the sound of a large ballista being loaded.

“Everyone, aim for the Evil Eye! As long as we take down the Evil Eye commanding the monsters, the others are just small fry!”

Someone who appeared to be a commander shouted.

Take out the commanding Evil Eye?

Yisi couldn’t help but tilt her head. It seemed the monsters in this world weren’t much different from those in “Ragnarøk.” The Evil Eye, which belonged to the psychic and wind elements, had the ability to control low-intelligence creatures.

“But a mere level 12 Evil Eye controlling a hundred monsters is too much. There must be someone else pulling the strings from behind. Is it the shadow of a Fallen Angel after all?”

If it was a Fallen Angel capable of summoning a Flame Giant, then controlling a hundred monsters below level ten would be explainable. The only thing that puzzled Yisi was the information she got from Camilla. When she asked Camilla if any of the Fallen Angels could spread diseases or summon fire monsters, Camilla had answered with a firm no.

If the Fallen Angels hadn’t grown stronger over the past thousand years, then the only other possibility was that the mastermind wasn’t a Fallen Angel at all.

It was getting more and more confusing.

Of course, she only had one thing to do, and that was to protect Camilla and her group.

While thinking, Yisi, who had arrived at the left side of the line, squeezed in between two male adventurers and then waved at them as they looked over.

“Leave the left side to us. You go support Ainos in the center. If the front line collapses, it’s all over.”

Seeing that it was Yisi, the eyes of the originally grim-faced adventurers lit up. Although they hadn’t encountered any monsters on the return journey, they still remembered the sight of Yisi and Camilla killing the giant slimes.

“Ooh! It’s Miss Yisi and Miss Camilla! Even Mary and Miss Tiffany are here!”

“Cut the chatter. Onee-sama told you to leave.”

“Alright! We’ll leave this to Miss Yisi! Everyone else, follow me!”

In high spirits, the adventurers ran towards the center, and the entire left flank, a defensive line nearly ten meters long, was suddenly empty, causing the merchants and travelers in the rear to cast worried glances.

“Is this really okay…”

“The monsters will definitely charge right in!”

“What are those adventurers doing! Letting a bunch of young women fight, are they trying to get us all killed!”

Catching their words, Camilla turned her head, her beautiful face filled with displeasure. Her narrowed ruby eyes revealed a chilling coldness.

“If you want to die, go out there yourself. Maggots who cannot comprehend onee-sama’s strength do not deserve to live.”

“Eek!”

The traveler, frightened by Camilla, quickly ducked back into the crowd. At that moment, the monsters finally charged into the range of the archers.

“Commander, the monsters are here!”

“Ignore the weak ones, aim for the Evil Eye! Don’t look directly into its eye!”

It seemed this group of soldiers had no intention of caring about the lives of the adventurers below. Yisi shook her head.

“Although a commander’s responsibility is to protect the many, being part of the few who are sacrificed still feels unfair…”

“They’re coming!”

Ainos’s shout came from the front of the line. Camilla had also made preparations during this time. Even if their group’s combat power was higher than the rookie adventurers, with only three available fighters, it was not suitable to maintain such a long defensive line. Therefore, Camilla used a person-high [Ice Wall] to seal off the left and right sides, leaving only a gap of about five meters in the middle.

“Tiffany, when the monsters get here, hit them with this, understand?”

“Mm..”

Yisi handed Tiffany some rocks. The criteria for gaining experience in this world was very broad; even an action like throwing stones that couldn’t cause damage would be counted as an assist. Although Tiffany seemed suited to be a healer in every way, she was currently only level 4. Even a healer needed some ability to protect herself.

Finally, the horde of various ferocious monsters, kicking up dust and dirt, charged in front of the adventurers.

It was obvious that the monsters were being controlled by someone. The bear-type monsters, skilled in direct assault, were positioned in the front, while wolf-type monsters circled to the flanks of the line. There were even two or three flying monsters in the air, occasionally stirring up sandstorms with wind magic.

Two adult wolves with silver fur leaped towards Yisi and Mary in the gap between the two ice walls.

“Mary, the left!”
