Volume 3, Chapter 13 – The Evil Eye

“Understood!”

With Mary handling the silver wolf on the left, Yisi, holding Gungnir, lowered her upper body and slid forward—it looked like a slide, but she had secretly applied [Accelerate] magic—rushing under the silver wolf that was frozen mid-air. She then thrust Gungnir into the wolf’s abdomen.

KRSHHK — !

Like a steel rod piercing a leather ball, a sound like deflating air came from the silver wolf’s belly. Its charge came to an abrupt halt as it was impaled by Gungnir.

Yisi, positioned beneath it, was almost splashed with blood as she dodged.

That was close.

Just from the smell, Yisi knew the silver wolf’s blood would not be tasty. She quickly shook Gungnir, flinging the wolf to the side.

“Amazing… she killed a silver wolf in one hit?!”

“How did she get under the wolf just now?”

“Isn’t a silver wolf a monster that takes three or four soldiers to barely handle?!”

“And she didn’t even use magic. There must be something special about that spear, maybe it’s Mithril-rank.”

“I’ve never seen an adventurer like this. Look, she’s just a little girl!”

Sorry for looking like a little girl.

Yisi first glanced at the exclaiming merchants and travelers, then at her own unremarkable chest. Although it was a bit better than Camilla’s, she had chosen the wrong person for comparison from the start.

But is even this level considered that strong? It seems I’ve shown a bit too much of my strength.

“Well, now that I’ve shown it, lowering my power would just make people suspicious. I’ll just keep this momentum going. As long as I’m not too conspicuous, it should be fine.”

Becoming famous was a job that required ample mental preparation. She couldn’t stand the feeling of being watched with every move, and besides, it wasn’t conducive to collecting blood.

“Hey, hey, look over there! The little girl with the shield!”

“Whoa, how can such a small body carry such a big shield? Even a man would have a hard time lifting it, right? Is the person who made her a vanguard a demon?”

…My apologies, Mary chose the shield herself.

Although Yisi also felt that Mary’s small frame was more suited for being an agile fighter.

“Wait a minute, why is that girl swinging the shield around so casually! Is she really not an axe warrior?”

Huh?

Yisi subconsciously glanced at Mary. The latter had completely given up using her one-handed sword and was instead wielding the square shield with both hands, using the blunt edge of the shield to clash head-on with a silver wolf. What made Yisi’s jaw drop was that the wolf’s impact was less powerful than one of Mary’s forward pushes; a few of the wolf’s teeth were even knocked out in the struggle.

How should I describe this… what a fantasy world…

If this were a manga, Yisi would definitely have black lines appearing over her head.

“That magic user is terrifyingly strong too! If she hadn’t frozen the ground with ice magic, these silver wolves would be much faster! That’s an area-of-effect slowing spell!”

“But shouldn’t a magic caster be using attack spells?”

“Eek! In the sky! In the sky! Those monsters are diving!”

“『Ice Shard』.”

Three consecutive ice shards pierced the diving monsters, but Camilla wasn’t pleased with her own achievement. She just snorted lightly and continued to support Mary in maintaining the defensive line.

“By comparison, who’s that green-haired girl over there? Is she also one of them? Why is she just throwing stones?”

“Well, if there are strong people in a team, there are naturally weak ones too. Maybe she’s responsible for cooking and washing clothes for the others. Don’t those powerful adventurer guilds hire servants?”

“That’s true, but I’ve never heard of an adventurer team like this in Antonio City. They’re almost as strong as the Flame Conquerors.”

“No way. The leader of the Flame Conquerors is Clementine, the ‘Star of Hermion’. Compared to Clementine, they still have a long way to go.”

As the merchants and travelers were chattering, a sudden change occurred on the front line. About thirty slimes lined up facing the city wall, stopping less than thirty meters away.

The first to notice were the soldiers on the wall.

“Those slimes suddenly stopped moving?”

“They’re devouring each other.”

“They’re getting bigger? Giant slimes? But giant slimes are supposed to grow naturally. These are just getting bigger in size.”

“Hey, hey, hey! What are those monsters doing? They’re willingly letting themselves be swallowed by the slimes?”

No one knew what the monsters were doing, but everyone felt their breathing become heavier, as if something bad was about to happen.

The next second, the three large slimes that had merged gave the answer.

—The monsters they had eaten were shot out from their bodies like cannonballs, smashing against the city wall with a tremendous roar.

Although some monsters had their bones broken and were unable to move after hitting the protrusions of the wall, most of the monsters the slimes had eaten were of a sturdy build. The ones that landed successfully soon climbed out from the recesses of the wall and engaged the city guards in close combat.

In just half a minute, the city wall was in chaos, filled with the shouts and screams of soldiers.

“This is bad…”

As Yisi murmured, the female adventurer named Lala suddenly rushed to her side, her body covered in blood, clearly having gone through a tough fight.

“Miss Yisi, the front line needs your support! The Evil Eye is there, we can’t hold on much longer!”

“Alright, I’m on my way.”

After weaving through the coming and going warriors, Yisi arrived at the front line. Just as Lala had said, the front was on the verge of collapse. For some reason, the adventurers didn’t dare to look up at the monsters and could only raise their shields to passively take hits. The line could break at any moment.

Is it because of that thing…

Yisi raised her head and glanced at the sky, where an Evil Eye was floating. Just like in “Ragnarøk,” the Evil Eye was a monster that was an eyeball with bat wings and a rat’s tail. It had no hands, feet, or facial features; its body was just a huge white eyeball over two meters in diameter, covered in purplish-black skin.

The Evil Eye commanding the entire army wasn’t focused on the city wall but was targeting Ainos in his red armor, hovering unsteadily in mid-air. Because ordinary people would feel fear welling up from within if they looked directly at an Evil Eye, causing their combat awareness to drop significantly, it was a particularly tricky opponent for adventurers without strong willpower. Among those present, only Ainos could meet the Evil Eye’s gaze.

Since others couldn’t be of much help by standing nearby, Ainos was fighting alone. One could clearly see the scorched marks on his armor, scars caused by the Evil Eye’s innate magic, [Thunder Strike].

“Ainos, I’m here to help.”

“Ah, thank you, Miss Yisi. But please, do not look directly at the Evil Eye. Those without sufficient mental strength will lose their courage if they meet its gaze and may never be able to return to the battlefield. Please support me, and let me hold it off!”

“Is that so?”

Yisi gripped Gungnir in her hand. She had originally planned to kill the Evil Eye with a single spear throw while others weren’t looking, but since Ainos said so, she wouldn’t do something so meddlesome. Kill-stealing was a rather rude thing to do.

But people who look at the Evil Eye will lose their courage…
