Volume 4, Chapter 39 – Assassination in Progress (Part 2)

Finally, there was the premise of Samael and Edith’s cooperation: if Edith failed to assassinate the impostor Hetty, Yisi must then cooperate with Samael to kill Hetty and release him from his slave contract.

Of course, in Edith’s view, this cooperation was completely unnecessary. However, Samael had insisted on it. Or rather, Samael had only been interested in Yisi from the very beginning. If Yisi didn’t agree to this cooperation, Samael would not agree to cooperate with Edith. Left with no choice, Edith had to allow this condition, which nearly challenged her bottom line.

Nearly twenty minutes after Refina had left, a violent explosion sounded from the back garden.

Refina’s magic.

None of the three pets were skilled in wide-area annihilation magic, so Edith had no choice but to give her precious magic crystal to Refina. That crystal contained the most powerful and spectacular magic she possessed; its value alone was comparable to Gungnir.

[Flame Cataclysm]

A lower-tier version of the fifth-circle magic [Firestorm], this was a third-circle spell. When used, it would create a huge vortex of fire with an extremely wide range, and the temperature at its center could even melt stone.

If not for having no other choice, even Edith would have been reluctant to use [Flame Cataclysm] here.

Visibly, under the vortex of fire that exceeded twenty meters in height, countless blood clan guards shouted as they rushed out from the mansion and courtyard, all heading towards the back garden. Shouts of “Fire!” and “Intruders!” were endless.

She waited quietly for two minutes, until no more guards came out of the mansion.

It was time.

If she encountered any guards on the way, she would kill them directly. She had to reach the fourth floor where Hetty was as quickly as possible.

Steeling her resolve, Edith spread her wings and rushed out of the alley.

Crossing the wide street between the mansion and the alley, she pushed off the ground with her long boots. Her nimble figure leaped up, flipping over the flower beds and fence, and landed at the base of the courtyard wall.

The entire front courtyard was silent, with only faint shouts coming from the back. Edith snorted coldly, chanting as she ran.

“—[Night Shadow].”

Her blue eyes gradually turned blood-red, and her running speed increased another notch. [Night Shadow] was a magic that only purebloods among the blood clan could learn. It allowed them to enhance their physical abilities for a period of time at the cost of consuming their own blood.

Undetected, Edith quickly passed through the garden and the side building, arriving at the main mansion. Hetty was inside this luxurious and classical building.

The main doors of the building were wide open. Inside, it was so quiet that you could hear a pin drop. Her long boots clattered on the stone floor as Edith skillfully made her way up the spiral staircase to the second floor.

Glancing at the corridor on the left, Edith didn’t stop, but ran directly to the third floor.

“Who’s there!”

She’d been discovered.

It’ll be bad if she calls for others.

I can’t let her make a sound.

Without even looking to see who had spoken, Edith pivoted on her right leg, and the Gungnir in her right hand drew a perfect arc.

Squish.

The sound of a spearhead piercing flesh.

“Ah!”

Like a rooster with its throat squeezed, the person let out a cry that wasn’t quite a scream. Edith took this opportunity to get a clear look at her.

She was a woman of about twenty, and also one of the pets she had raised.

Of course, her pets were not limited to the five she had brought with her, including Refina. She also kept pets in the mansion whom she had deemed “incompetent”—those who knew neither magic nor how to use weapons—and could only be kept at home. This was one of them.

And when this pet saw Edith, her features gradually contorted, and tears welled up in her eyes. Her first reaction was not relief at Edith’s return, but an expression of seeing something terrifying. Ignoring the gash on her abdomen, she got on all fours like a dog and fled from Edith in a panic.

—The pets still remaining in the mansion were all traitors.

When Hetty inherited Edith’s name, the pets in the mansion had different reactions, and they were roughly divided into two groups. The first group, like Refina, was loyal to Edith and resolved not to bow to Hetty. These pets either failed in their assassination attempts on Hetty and were driven to suicide by her mind magic, or they simply fled the mansion to await Edith’s return. This group constituted the majority.

The other group, like the pet named “Clara” that Edith had taken with her, had sold out information about Edith to Hetty in order to continue enjoying their lavish lifestyle, thereby currying favor with Hetty and serving a new master.

And all of these pets knew full well how Edith treated traitors. If one were to name the people in this world who least wanted to see Edith return, it would undoubtedly be these traitors.

That’s why this pet, whose abdomen had been slashed by Edith’s spear, was fleeing in a panic like a dog.

She feared Edith’s methods, feared being tortured by her.

But before committing the act of betrayal, she should have been mentally prepared for this day.

“…Hehe.” Uncontrollably, a cruel smile appeared on Edith’s face. “You should have known the consequences on the day you betrayed me. Thank the gods for the grace they have bestowed upon you. You will die a happier death than the other dogs.”

With a clean and efficient move, she pierced the back of her neck with her spear. Edith pulled out the long spear, no longer looking at the pet who was spitting out bloody foam, her eyes full of tears, and constantly convulsing. She ran directly to the third floor.

The power of the Tower of Pescia could quickly suppress the flames. Her time was limited.

Third floor, she encountered no one.

Fourth floor, she killed two guards.

Taking a slight breath and shaking off the viscous blood that had slid down the spear onto her hand, Edith finally arrived at the fourth-floor corridor.

The red-carpeted corridor was spotless. Combined with the soft light from the magic lamps on the walls, the entire space was rendered exceptionally warm. Even with countless people fighting the fire in the back garden, the sound could not penetrate here.

Step by step, with a steady thud-thud, Edith slowly walked to what was originally her own room.

As planned, the lock had already been destroyed by Samael. With just a light push, the door opened.

A familiar sight came into view.

The room, about thirty square meters, was furnished with a dressing table, a tea table, and a large pink canopy bed. The walls were still the familiar pink. The curtains were drawn tightly, and the thick, cloying scent of incense filled her nostrils. Edith could even see the smoke lingering in the air.

An ordinary person would feel drowsy after inhaling just a little. Even a fallen angel with extremely high physical strength would fall into a deep sleep after inhaling too much. But Edith had already taken the pill prepared by Samael beforehand; for the next hour, she would not have to fear this scent.

“Now it’s your turn…”

Her gaze finally fell on Hetty, who was sleeping in the bed.
