Volume 6, Chapter 55 – The Onslaught
Soon, at Yisi’s strong request, Evelyn and Yisi arrived at a shop that sold magic cores—a building that specialized in selling magic scrolls.
Unlike ordinary single-story shops, perhaps because of the high profit from magic scrolls, the three-story building had been bought out entirely. The decoration was also very exquisite. The floor and walls were swept spotlessly clean. Even though it was daytime, the magic lamps were lit. The shelves were filled with bound magic scrolls, and magic weapons were hung on the walls as decoration. It could be said that, except for the lack of glass display cases, it already had the decorative style of a jewelry store on Earth.
Under the watchful gazes of the two guards at the door, the two of them walked into the shop.
“Aren’t magic cores cheaper than magic scrolls? Why are you buying magic scrolls?”
“As long as it’s something that contains magic power, it will attract those monsters. Don’t you know that, Yisi?”
“I mean, magic cores are cheaper than magic scrolls. Since they can both attract those monsters, if you want to save money, isn’t it better to buy magic cores?”
“Huh? Save money?” Evelyn tilted her head, a look of astonishment on her face. “You seem to have misunderstood something, Yisi. I never planned to use my own money to buy them.”
So she’s planning to have the church reimburse her.
Casually picking up a roll of magic scrolls from the shelf, Evelyn, as if she were going to buy it, tucked it under her arm. Then, with a very decisive motion, she completely ignored the price and put one magic scroll after another into her arms until they were full. Then, she simply had the shop assistant bring over a sack for grain and stuffed them all into it.
From the shop assistant’s dumbfounded, jaw-droppingly exaggerated expression, as if an apple could be stuffed into his mouth, one could tell that Evelyn’s method of buying magic scrolls was absolutely out of the ordinary.
It wasn’t until the first sack was full and she was about to start on the second that the shop assistant finally reacted.
“W-Wait, miss. So many magic scrolls, that’s at least a hundred gold coins…”

Perhaps because Evelyn was not wearing her priestess’s habit, or perhaps because the shop assistant was not a local, she did not recognize Evelyn’s identity. However, Evelyn paid her no mind.
“These are just the most basic Tier 1 magic scrolls, right? What about the Tier 2 and Tier 3 magic scrolls?”
“On the second and third floors. But those require a certain status to be allowed to purchase. If you cannot prove that you have sufficient financial resources…”
Evelyn brandished the Staff of Divine Retribution in her hand.
“This should be enough, right?”
“This…”
The shop assistant looked troubled.
She could have just solved the problem by revealing her identity as the next Pope.
While feeling annoyed, Yisi took out a gem coin with a bright, translucent luster from her inventory—one gem coin was equal to one hundred platinum coins, and one platinum coin was equal to one hundred gold coins.
The shop assistant’s expression became wonderful.
“Th-This is a gem coin?! It’s the first time I’ve ever seen one. So this is what it looks like… Please wait a moment, I need to go and get the manager.”

Before his words had even finished, the shop assistant hurriedly ran off.
Evelyn turned her head to look at Yisi in astonishment.
“No wonder you weren’t attracted by the reward I offered before. So you’re this rich.”
“It was a gift from Andrea.”
Of course, she wouldn’t let Andrea give it to her for free. She had exchanged an equivalent amount of gold coins from her inventory for this one gem coin.
As if feeling dissatisfied, Evelyn pouted.
“Tsk, I almost forgot about your relationship with Andrea. No, I’ve already forgotten. Although it feels a bit late now, to not even spare Andrea, you…”
With a look as if she were looking at trash, with great disgust, Evelyn took a small step back, drawing a clear line between them. And just as Yisi was about to defend herself, a middle-aged man with a potbelly appeared in her field of vision.
After seeing Evelyn, the man was stunned for a moment, then sweat involuntarily broke out on his forehead. As if he were a warrior about to die a heroic death, with an atmosphere as if he had made up his mind and was facing death with equanimity, he walked up to Evelyn.
Then his expression instantly became fawning.
“Ooh! I heard that a guest with a gem coin wanted to buy scrolls. I thought it was a noble from out of town. So it’s Lady Evelyn…” The man rubbed his hands together and asked tentatively and cautiously, “Are you here to pay for the magic scrolls from last time?”
Pay? Last time?

Could it be that Evelyn had been in debt before? But thinking about Evelyn’s nasty personality, it felt natural for her to not pay her debts. Not everyone had the guts to ask the church for money.
Completely ignoring the manager’s words, Evelyn very seriously pointed to several shelves with the Staff of Divine Retribution.
“These, these, and these. It would be best if you could also give me a portion of the Tier 2 and Tier 3 magic scrolls. I will be keeping them for you on behalf of the church. After the matter is settled, I will return them to you intact—if there is any damage, I will compensate you according to the price.”
Hey, hey, this is robbery.
At first, when Evelyn said she was representing the church, she had thought that she was going to buy the scrolls with the church’s public funds. She hadn’t expected that she would borrow the scrolls using the church’s name, and then, after attracting the monsters and killing them, return the scrolls.
“Uh…” As if very nervous, more beads of sweat appeared on the middle-aged man’s face. “Lady Evelyn, if you only need a small portion of the Tier 1 scrolls, I can offer them to you as a tribute to the Goddess, free of charge. But with such a large quantity, and also including Tier 2 and Tier 3 scrolls, we really can’t afford to give them away.”
Evelyn frowned slightly.
“Let me say this first. I’m not so despicable as to snatch your things. The reason I said ‘keep’ is for your own safety. You should have heard the news of the monsters appearing recently. Those monsters specifically look for places where a large amount of magic power is gathered, and magic scrolls are among them.”
“Specifically looking for places where magic power is gathered…” The manager’s expression became a little more serious. “I have indeed heard the news of the monsters appearing. But I have recently hired several more adventurers as guards. There are people on every floor. Even if there are monsters, they won’t be able to threaten us.”
So the guards at the door were adventurers. No wonder their clothes weren’t so neat.
While thinking to herself, Yisi continued to stand behind Evelyn and listen to the conversation.
“Those monsters are not something that a few adventurers can deal with. Even the church’s paladins have to put in a lot of effort to repel them. If you don’t believe me—” Evelyn turned to Yisi and, while unceremoniously prying open Yisi’s fingers and taking the gem coin she was holding, whispered into her ear, “Let me borrow this for a moment. I’ll give it back when I’m done, I promise.”

Then she placed the gem coin on a nearby table.
“If you don’t believe me, I can leave this gem coin with you as a guarantee.”
“This…” With a deposit as a guarantee, the manager looked hesitant. It wasn’t that he didn’t want to believe Evelyn, but the stakes were too high. He needed time to sort things out and think. “If there’s a gem coin…”
Boom—!
Before the manager could finish his words, a hole was suddenly smashed into the wall of the building with violence. With a loud roar, bricks and dust scattered, and the shelves, like dominoes being pushed over, fell one after another. The room was in a mess.
“Cough, cough, wh-what was that!?”
The manager’s question was mixed with a curse.
But Yisi just, like kicking a ball, bypassed Evelyn, kicked the manager into a corner, then knocked Evelyn aside, took out Gungnir from her inventory, and without hesitation, swung it at a cloud of dust.
Clang!
As if hitting steel, a skin-tingling tremor resounded through the house. Then, another hole appeared in the wall—with a human-shaped silhouette.
The angel had been sent flying by Yisi.
