Volume 6, Chapter 62 – Domain of Death
“Trust me. Trust them. With the intelligence of those monsters, it’s very likely a feint. Having learned their lesson from the afternoon, they’ve probably already guessed that we know their objective and that we would send people to intercept them. So this could be a deliberate commotion to attract our attention. After we leave, they’ll take advantage of the opening to sneak in, steal the scrolls, and strengthen themselves. Don’t forget, one of the two monsters from this morning escaped.”
“…Tsk.”
Clicking her tongue in frustration, Evelyn slowly released the force from her foot on the edge of the roof. Of the two monsters that had attacked the scroll shop in the morning, the one that hadn’t been smashed into a pulp had escaped from the ruins. Yisi’s deduction was not a wild guess. Those monsters were different from unintelligent ones; they should be treated as opponents with intelligence equal to that of humans.
But even so, Evelyn couldn’t stop worrying about the east, where the commotion had already started. She forcibly suppressed the anxiety that had already risen to her throat, her voice filled with unwillingness.
“So we’re just going to wait here?”
“Just a little longer. If there’s still no movement, I’ll stay here, and you can go to support the east, Evelyn.”
“Fine.”
Although she agreed with Yisi, Evelyn, contrary to her previous caution, began to pace anxiously on the snow-covered roof, glancing from time to time at the fiery east. Against the backdrop of the night, the ten-meter-high pillar of fire and the black smoke that filled the sky were exceptionally conspicuous. There was also some dazzling blue light mixed in, which was the light emitted by the magic scrolls when they were ignited, their own magic circuits destroyed, and their magic power leaked out. The blue light was the manifestation of that magic power.
The torment of every minute feeling like a day.

Although less than five minutes had passed, Evelyn felt as if five days had already gone by.
When she saw figures rushing towards the east one after another from the surrounding rooftops, the paladins on standby in the distance lighting their torches and heading towards the firelight along the street, and the nearby residents opening their windows to peek outside, Evelyn finally couldn’t suppress the anxiety in her heart, which felt like it was being roasted by fire.
“I can’t wait any longer. You stay here, Yisi. I’m going to the east to help! Half of the people in ambush around here have already gone!”
“But the hunters haven’t moved yet. Even if you don’t believe me, Evelyn, you should believe the hunters’ judgment. They’ve also guessed that this might be a feint.”
“I can’t worry about that much. I can’t just watch your companions fight while I do nothing!”
And it was at this moment that an invisible yet terrifying wave of magic power swept past Yisi and Evelyn. After feeling the magic power contained within, Evelyn’s impulse instantly disappeared. She and Yisi both looked towards the source of the magic impact. Immediately after, Evelyn’s heart clenched. The terrifying sight made her eyes widen slightly, and her voice began to tremble.
“Th-That… What is that? The temple… the temple is being?”
Just as Evelyn said, the temple in the due west was covered by an inverted, bowl-shaped ‘blackness’. Even the ink-black, moonless night could not compare to the blackness in the distance that seemed to be trying to suck people in. Anything that touched the expanding black light shield—no, it should be called a curse—anything that touched this black curse, be it earth, walls, statues, or even air and light, all instantly collapsed, disappearing as if they had been devoured, becoming a part of the pitch-blackness, forming a domain of death.
When the inverted black semicircle had expanded to twenty meters, enveloping a small half of the temple, it finally stopped expanding and, like a leaking balloon, rapidly shrank and soon disappeared. And the west side of the temple that was left behind was like a piece of cake that had been eaten by someone, with one corner completely scooped out. The cut surface was uneven, as if it had been corroded by something.
The terrifying sight that made one’s heart tremble made Evelyn suck in a sharp breath. Her heart constricted violently, and even in the severe winter, her body was sweating as if under a scorching sun.

Anyone who saw such a sight would be afraid. Without any warning, silently disappearing without even leaving a trace of its existence… if she were not used to seeing death, Evelyn would have already thrown up.
She could probably guess what this was, but her brain was unwilling to believe it.
It was the magic of that group of monsters.
Perhaps the Fallen also had such an ability, but if it were the Fallen, they would only have targeted the central temple, and at a time when Julius was around. The sphere just now was an advanced version of the pitch-black liquid the monster had spewed in the afternoon.
Disbelief welled up in her heart.
“How is that possible…”
It had only been one afternoon. How could those monsters have evolved to this point? Or was it that the two monsters she had met in the afternoon happened to be the weakest two of the remaining four, and the other two were already strong enough to use Tier 3 or even Tier 4 magic?
If they could really use Tier 4 magic, she would have to deploy all the hunters to have a chance of catching them. Unlike dragons, which were tall and obvious targets, this group of strange monsters could hide in any corner of the city. Evelyn no longer knew what was the appropriate thing to do next.
An unquestionable, urgent voice sounded in her ear.

“Evelyn, it’s time to go!”
“Where to?”
“To the west, of course! That’s the monsters’ real target. Now is the time for you to show your strength!”
“But that level of strength…”
An opponent who could use Tier 4 magic was already beyond her control. The correct way to deal with them should be to have a character like the Inquisitor General handle them.
In a semi-coercive manner, Yisi pushed Evelyn’s back.
“Where did your courage from before go? Those monsters must not have much magic power left after using that spell just now. Even we can defeat them. As a magic caster, you should know how much of a drain a Tier 4 spell is on one’s magic power, right?”
Moreover, that group of monsters was not really level forty or so. Or rather, this group of monsters could not be simply measured by level. A normal creature has a magic power limit, and the magic power limit reflects the level. But these monsters were completely different. Their magic power limit had been 800 points since birth. As long as there was magic power for them to assimilate, they could accumulate it in a way that was ‘unlimited’ in the eyes of ordinary people. However, the drawback was also obvious. They were different from humans. After their magic power was used up, they needed to assimilate new magic power and could not rely on their own recovery.
This was also the reason why Yisi was not worried that they would surpass her.

“But there are two of them.”
“Aren’t there two of us as well? I’ll hold off the one that hasn’t used magic, and you go and eliminate the one that’s out of magic power—remember to use the magic medicine.”
“Can you handle it?”
Faced with Evelyn’s frowning doubt, Yisi gave her an encouraging smile and a thumbs-up.
“I have to, even if I can’t.”
An annoying yet reassuring smile.
Forcing herself to remain calm, Evelyn pouted.
“Hmph, don’t die. Otherwise, I’ll risk my life to have Julius resurrect you. □□□—[Levitation], □□—[Wind’s Blessing].”
After casting enhancement magic on herself, Evelyn floated down from the roof like a leaf, then pushed off the ground with her feet and rushed towards the west side of the temple with Yisi at full speed.
