Volume 1, Chapter 4 – Entering a Human Town Without a Hitch?

Thinking about this and that, Yisi quickly arrived near the town of Anno. Due to the previous battle with the manticore, her cheeks and palms had suffered varying degrees of injury. To avoid looking overly suspicious, Yisi chose to first use healing magic to erase the scars, then summoned clean water with water magic to wash her face.

For now, she could seamlessly use all the skills from the game, provided she had used them before and remembered how they felt. As a veteran player who had been through both “F.Wing” the predecessor of “Ragnarøk“ and Ragnarøk itself, the sensation of using skills was deeply ingrained in her mind. As long as she cycled through all her skills periodically, she wouldn’t forget how to cast any of them.

“So this is a human town…”

Gazing at the city walls before her, Yisi felt a surge of emotion. She shielded her eyes from the sunlight and squinted slightly. The walls of Anno were far from towering—compared to the hundred-meter-high fortifications common in the game, these were child’s play. Yet, unlike the game, Anno had its own unique charm. A long line of people waiting to enter stretched all the way to where Yisi stood.

Among them were merchants on horseback and farmers pushing carts, all dressed in simple, unassuming attire. Even though Yisi had just been a captive, standing among them made her stick out like a sore thumb.

Additionally, Yisi noticed a vampire at the front of the line being inspected by the guards. The way they interacted suggested familiarity.

“Probably a long-term resident…”

She felt somewhat relieved—at least this proved that vampires could enter human towns.

“Anno is quite a distance from Niru City. The Count’s eldest daughter has never left Niru, so no one should recognize me.”

Yisi lowered her head in thought. Once inside, she’d need to find lodging and start gathering information. First, she had to identify the strongest individuals in this world to avoid accidentally provoking disaster. Next, she’d look for a place where she could settle down. Anno was too close to Niru—even if news traveled slowly in this world, she couldn’t risk staying here long.

Most importantly, there was the manticore… The people in this town were all below level 10, so why was an 800-level manticore living nearby? Didn’t they find it dangerous?

For a moment, Yisi imagined scenarios where the townsfolk offered sacrifices to the manticore or worshiped it as a deity.

“Well, the manticore’s gone now, so no point dwelling on it. But the fact that Explosion magic could kill an 800-level manticore was completely unexpected. I’ve never heard of anything like that before. Maybe everyone was too embarrassed to shout skill names out loud, so no one ever tried?”

Yet something still felt off. The manticores she’d seen in strategy guides were massive, more imposing than dragons. The one she’d fought was only ten meters long—compared to the majestic creatures described in the guides, it was like comparing fireflies to the moon.

“Little girl, are you alone?”

A middle-aged man behind her suddenly spoke up. Realizing he was addressing her, Yisi turned around naturally.

“Huh? Ah, yes.”

She wasn’t sure why she could speak a language she’d never learned, but at least communication wasn’t an issue.

Yisi noticed that humans and vampires spoke different languages, yet she somehow understood both.

Probably inherited from the Count’s eldest daughter’s memories.

She felt a quiet relief. The people of this world weren’t as hostile as she’d imagined. This middle-aged man seemed like a local farmer—the honest, hardworking type.

But just as Yisi was marveling at the wholesome simplicity of this world, the man stared at her wings and face with the expression of someone seeing something rare.

“That’s an unusual outfit. Did you get separated from your troupe?”

Troupe? Like a circus troupe? But what did he mean by outfit…

Following his gaze, Yisi looked down at the wings on her back. She had deliberately kept them still to avoid inconveniencing others in line. The man must have mistaken them for a costume.

Before she could respond, the man stroked his chin and chuckled to himself.

“Is it a play about vampires? I’ve only heard of troupes performing in Niru City, but the tickets were so expensive only nobles could afford them. Never thought a troupe would come to Anno—what a rare opportunity! You’ll find your group soon, little girl.”

“Ahaha…”

At this point, correcting him would only embarrass the man. Yisi forced a smile and changed the subject.

“This is my first time in Anno. I’m looking for a place to stay—do you have any recommendations for an inn?”

“Huh? The troupe didn’t arrange lodging for you? That’s outrageous, leaving such a pretty girl all alone outside. Not that I’d mind you staying at my place, but I suppose that’d make you uncomfortable. As for recommendations, Anno only has one inn. Even if you don’t like it, you’ll have to make do.”

After speaking, the farmer placed a hand on his cart and motioned forward. “Time to move up. It’s almost your turn.”

“Ah, got it. Thanks.”

Nodding quickly, Yisi stepped forward. Passing through the gate didn’t require any formalities—ordinary travelers just had to walk in under the guards’ watchful eyes. Only those with carts or carriages were inspected, likely to check for suspicious individuals or contraband.

But just as Yisi was about to enter, the guards at the gate suddenly called out to her.

“Hey, stop right there.”

“Eh? Um… is there a problem?”

Yisi stiffened. The feeling was like going through airport security with nothing in her bag—yet still feeling inexplicably nervous.

Seeing she wasn’t resisting, the two armored guards lowered their spears and escorted her to an open area beside the gate. They scrutinized her with what Yisi found to be an odd expression, muttering to each other instead of addressing her directly.

“Is that a vampire? She looks kinda intimidating.”

“No way… Vampires can’t stand in sunlight.”

“That’s what I thought.”

Both guards glanced up at the sun. The midday glare was so intense it hurt to look.

“So she’s not a vampire? Even with those wings?”

“Maybe some noble’s weird hobby? She’s dressed like a princess from some country. Nobles love exotic stuff.”

“But those wings look way too real. Look! They’re moving!”

“Just some noble kid’s prank. You’re overreacting, Charlie.”

“Tch. So we’re just letting her go?”

“What else can we do? I don’t want to be accused of harassing nobility.”

Shrugging, the guard who spoke stepped forward and put on what he thought was a friendly smile.

“What’s your name, little girl?”

“…Loiswell?”

“Sounds familiar. Must be some noble family.” He muttered just loud enough for Yisi to hear before eyeing her wings again. “Are those props?”

“Huh? Not realistic enough?”

Rather than raising suspicion, her response made the guard nod in understanding, his gaze drifting nostalgically.

“I used to play vampires at your age too. Too bad I was born into a common family… Alright, you’re good to go. Anno might not be rich, but it’s peaceful enough.”

“Thank you.”

Without thinking, Yisi bowed slightly before walking past the guards into the town.

“Humans and vampires aren’t as hostile as I thought.”

Sighing quietly, she stepped out of the dim gate tunnel and squinted as sunlight washed over her—like a rebirth.

“Next, I need to find an inn… But first, I’ve got to figure out how to get money.”
