Volume 10, Chapter 32 – Overly Terrifying Demons

Because demons had appeared in multiple parts of the city at once, many places needed help, and the guards couldn’t free up their hands. As a result, it wasn’t until the sun was about to set and the sky was stained orange-red that Yisi’s group, having finished off the demons, was finally summoned by the guards.

Of course, it was less a “summons” and more a “visit.” The guards, looking as if they were prepared to die, rushed to Margaret’s entrance. Upon seeing the demon blood everywhere, they thanked Yisi with expressions of immense gratitude. From their fragmented words, Yisi learned that these guards had been rushing to several different locations all afternoon. Many of them had been injured defending against the demons, and their stamina was nearly at its limit. They had come here bracing for death, and now, learning the demons had been dealt with, they could finally relax.

Under the watchful eyes of a crowd of onlookers, Yisi accepted the guards’ questioning—mostly just explaining what had happened and if they’d seen anything suspicious.

“Please tell me your name, brave warrior. I will report your heroic deeds to City Lord Schumann when I return.”

The captain’s emotional expression made Yisi wave her hand with a wry smile.

“Captain, there’s no need to seek credit for us. Demons are our common enemy.”

“Ah, what a kind lady.”

“It is the Empire’s great fortune to have a warrior like you, who asks for nothing in return,” the captain, a burly man with a thick beard, said with emotion. Then, as if remembering something, he rubbed his chin and pointed to the now-empty street across from Margaret. Because of the demon blood, no one was standing there. “But please forgive my rudeness, warrior. Where did the demons’ corpses go? Although you were the ones who defeated them, and the corpses are your private property, the appearance of these demons is too strange. We need to take the bodies back for investigation. We will return them to you when we’re finished.”

“What about the magic cores?” Sera, standing by Yisi, asked in a serious tone.

Just a year and a half ago, she was still a child, and now she’s grown into a poised young woman. The change was so great, Yisi couldn’t help but marvel.

“The magic cores will be purchased at market price, according to imperial law.”

“Shouldn’t they be considered Lady Yisi’s private property?” Sera’s sharp question made the captain’s face turn bitter.

“All magic cores produced within the Empire must be turned over to the Imperial Magic Caster Association. If you need magic cores, miss, you can go to the association and buy them with the gold coins we give you. They will review your identity at that time, so please don’t be alarmed.”

To prevent demon worshipers from using magic cores to concoct forbidden drugs, the Empire collected all cores and prohibited private trade or gifting. Anyone found hoarding them would be imprisoned or exiled. And if the person was a user of dark or necromantic magic, even their family and friends would be investigated. The control was extremely strict.

“If the cores are put in storage magic, or a demon worshiper just asks someone else to buy them, this troublesome law is useless,” Tina grumbled.

“It’s to increase the cost of the crime,” Yisi said. It might not stop the big criminals, but it can stop ordinary people with ill intentions.

Yisi straightened Tina’s hat and shifted slightly, revealing several large wooden barrels lined up behind her. Upon seeing them, the soldiers who had fought alongside Mary, as well as the nearby onlookers, all turned green. Some even dry-heaved. The newly arrived soldiers didn’t know that the reason they didn’t see any corpses was because Yisi had made the perpetrators—the two angels and Tina—stuff the mangled remains into the barrels.

When Yisi had returned after chasing off the flute player, she’d found the demons not only decapitated, but their limbs twisted at impossible angles, with bits of flesh and organs scattered everywhere. The smell of blood, mixed with vomit, filled the street. If young children had seen it, they’d be traumatized. So, Yisi had the three of them chop the demons up and put them in the barrels to await disposal.

Between my “children” and these demons, it’s debatable which is the more “demonic.”

I’m so sorry my children are so violent…

Apologizing inwardly, Yisi forced a smile.

“The demon corpses are in here. It was too gruesome to leave them out, so we stored them in the barrels. Captain, you can take the barrels and all.”

“You’re too thoughtful, miss.” The burly captain chuckled and walked over. “May I open one? Not that I doubt you, it’s just, demons are big. These barrels are big, but compared to a demon…”

“You can check anytime, Captain. I just wouldn’t recommend it.”

“Ah, with your word, miss, I’m reassur—”

Before he could finish, the good-naturedly smiling captain lifted a lid. He glimpsed the horrific sight of demon limbs and heads twisted together, staring straight at him.

His words died.

His face rapidly drained of color, from red to white, then white to green. He swallowed, hard. But in the end, he couldn’t hold it back.

“Bweeergh!”

He vomited on the ground. Several of his subordinates rushed over.

“Captain! Are you alright!?”

“Is there poison in the barrel—Ugh… gurgle… BWEEEERGH—”

The second victim appeared. Then, like dominoes, the other soldiers, thinking the barrel was toxic, went to check one by one. And one by one, they turned green and threw up.

This is exactly why I didn’t recommend opening it.

“M-Miss Yisi, shouldn’t we… put it away?” Sera asked, clutching her chest, her face pale.

“Mhm. Don’t use the staff. Go to the Adventurers’ Guild and hire some adventurers to deliver these to the soldiers’ barracks.”

“Right. I’ll go right now.”

At that moment, Yisi didn’t know that when the adventurers saw Sera post the quest—”Transport cargo from Margaret to the West District barracks,” for a full five silver coins—they would fight like mad over the easy job. Normally, delivery quests involved traveling through the suburbs, with the risk of bandits or monsters. This quest was entirely within the city, with zero risk and an unbelievable reward.

After a fierce struggle, a mithril-rank adventurer team got the quest. However, when curiosity drove them to open the barrels, they immediately added five silver coins of their own and passed the job to someone else.

Amusingly, because this mithril-rank team couldn’t keep any food down for several days afterward, everyone assumed they had undertaken some ultra-high-difficulty quest. For a time, they became the talk of the guild—it wasn’t until half a year later, when Yisi was browsing one of Fran’s reports, that she learned what had happened.
