Volume 2, Chapter 5 – Perhaps the Vampire Princess of the Fallen

It sounded somewhat unbelievable.

The idea that the Fallen would pay a price for gaining power didn’t strike Yisi as strange, but the notion that their affliction could spread to others was something she found hard to comprehend. Of course, this was merely Yisi’s baseless personal speculation. In reality, if such incidents had never occurred, in this era of limited information, such terrifying rumors would not only vanish quickly but would never have spread widely in the first place.

Following Nix’s words, Camilla added on his behalf.

“According to the Church’s teachings, the Fallen are those who have betrayed the Goddess Ymir and were thus turned into demons by Her. They seduce humans with their words, turning them into their own kind—though this is just the Church’s propaganda.”

“But it’s not just the Church that banishes the Fallen. The other two non-Church nations also enforce policies to expel them.” At this point, as if afraid of being overheard, Nix glanced mysteriously at his subordinates, then took a small step forward to stand before Yisi.

“Recently, there have been rumors that the Empire dispatched a covert unit to the border of the Kingdom of Hels. I suspect that the group of Fallen hiding in the village were Imperial soldiers. Ordinary Fallen wouldn’t dare oppose the military. So, Miss Yisi, please stay as far away from the Fallen as possible.”

In other words, be careful not to get dragged into political affairs. Yisi accepted Nix’s goodwill, though the idea that a nation would cultivate the Fallen was surprising to her. Based on Nix’s earlier explanation, the Fallen should be creatures that couldn’t operate in the open.

As if sensing Yisi’s confusion, Camilla tightened the rope around the struggling wolf pup and pulled it back into her arms before explaining.

“Although the Church claims that the Fallen’s affliction can spread to normal people, due to the diversity and unpredictability of their abilities, they hold limitless potential for warfare. Aside from the Ymir Theocracy, which strictly forbids the Fallen from entering, other nations—including the Vampires—permit their existence.

However, each nation handles them differently. Take the Kingdom of Hels, for example: a Fallen must be claimed by a master to walk the streets. If a Fallen causes trouble, the master bears the punishment. As for the Vampires, due to the high autonomy of their territories, attitudes toward the Fallen vary greatly among the fourteen domains. For instance, the Pescia Territory treats the Fallen no differently from ordinary people, requiring no supervision, while the inland territories closer to the royal capital believe the Fallen shouldn’t exist at all.”

“The same as ordinary people? Count Pescia is unexpectedly progressive.”

“No, Onee-sama. It’s because Count Pescia’s daughter, Loiswell Edith Pescia herself is a Fallen.”

“Huh…”

In other words, she herself was a Fallen.

Yisi froze for a moment, then immediately began sifting through the memories of the Count’s eldest daughter. Though she had previously resolved not to revisit those memories to avoid being influenced by the daughter’s personality, this matter concerned her survival, so she had no choice but to look.

After a moment of silence, she found the relevant clues.

The Count’s eldest daughter was a Fallen with an innate regenerative ability. This power had existed since her birth, and it wasn’t as pleasant as it sounded. It was passive, always active whether she willed it or not. For example, if she accidentally cut herself, even without consciously activating the ability, the wound would heal on its own.

And whenever the regeneration took effect, the dark red markings on the Count’s eldest daughter’s body would spread further. From what Yisi knew, even though the daughter had lived cautiously since birth, avoiding injuries as much as possible, by the time Yisi took over her body, the dark red patterns had already covered her entire back.

Yet Yisi had never seen these markings.

She carefully recalled the night of her first day in this world. When she bathed that evening, she hadn’t noticed any such patterns in the mirror—yet by then, the markings on the daughter’s body had already reached her shoulders, visible with just a slight bow of the head.

Had the Fallen’s power disappeared along with the daughter’s soul the moment Yisi crossed over?

It was an easy conclusion to draw, but Yisi couldn’t be certain it was the truth. The observable fact was that her wounds healed within seconds of being inflicted. At first, Yisi had assumed it was due to her high level, resulting in rapid health recovery. But now, it seemed the truth was more complicated.

It couldn’t be that only the negative effects vanished, leaving behind the regeneration, could it?

She couldn’t afford to entertain such wishful thinking. She would have to ask Camilla for her opinion later when they were alone.

“Boss, we’ve brought the frostwolf corpses back from the other side of the mountain. How should we handle them?”

A young man, his clothes stained red and reeking of blood, rushed to Nix’s side. Earlier, to avoid being seen during the battle, Yisi had lured the frostwolves to the opposite side of the hill before fighting them. According to Nix, frostwolf corpses could fetch a good price in the city, so he had ordered his men to collect them.

“These belong to Miss Yisi. Drain the blood, then load them onto the cart and await her instructions.”

“Understood.”
