Chapter 116 The Secret Behind the Primordial Sealing Ruin
Chapter 116: Chapter 116 The Secret Behind the Primordial Sealing Ruin
Outside the Primordial Sealing Ruin, the air was tight with worry.
The elders of the various forces had been waiting for their younger generations to come back.
Beside them stood the Patriarchs of the seven Forbidden Families, the Masters of the eight Forbidden Sects, the Patriarchs of the nine Holy Families, and the Masters of the eight Holy Sects.
The leaders of all thirty-two major forces were there.
Nobody knew what had happened in the final trial.
And after the earlier eliminations, many of them were afraid for their descendants and disciples.
Suddenly, the enormous ancient stone gate began to glow.
Every head turned.
Golden light spread across the entrance.
Figures began to appear, one after another.
The first few stumbled when they landed, then caught their balance.
More kept coming out of the light, and within moments the crowd of returning participants had grown large.
"Another round of eliminations?"
"Why are so many coming out at once?"
"Has the trial become even more dangerous?"
It was an understandable fear.
The ones who had been eliminated earlier had also come out in flashes of golden light.
Some had even lost a minor cultivation level, leaving their forces shocked and furious.
Now, seeing so many come out together, the elders assumed the worst.
Several leaders were already searching the crowd for their own people.
Then a familiar voice rang out.
"Wait! This isn’t an elimination!"
It was Mo Chen.
He stepped forward and looked at the leaders around him.
"We completed all five trials. The ancient voice sent us out after the inheritance trial ended."
The murmuring stopped.
"What did you say?"
"All five trials?"
"Then why were all of you sent out together?"
Mo Chen nodded.
"The last trial was an inheritance trial. When it ended, the ancient voice sent everyone back outside."
The elders stared at him.
An inheritance trial?
They had expected the ruin to hold ancient inheritances.
But nobody had imagined five separate trials stood in the way.
The ones who were eliminated earlier had only known the first few, and even those accounts had been confused and incomplete.
Xiang Wuchen of the Starfall Forbidden Sect stepped up to one of his disciples and looked him over.
"Are you hurt?"
"I’m fine, Master."
The young man shook his head.
"There were some dangerous trials, but I got through them. The last one was about inheritances. They chose whoever they thought suited them."
Xiang Wuchen studied him a moment longer, then relaxed.
"Good. You’ll tell me everything when we get back."
Similar scenes played out across the crowd.
Leaders checked on their descendants and disciples, and the returned participants began to talk about what they’d been through.
Some told of the dangerous trials.
Others spoke of the treasures they had found.
But the more the leaders heard, the more confused they became.
A ruin that had stayed a mystery for countless years had suddenly revealed a full system of trials that none of them had known existed.
The Patriarch of the Long Family frowned.
"This is strange. We have studied the records of the Primordial Sealing Ruin for generations, and none of them mention these five trials."
Gu Xinghe of the Myriad Ages Sect nodded.
"Indeed. The ruin has existed since ancient times. If the trials were always part of it, why did no one ever write them down?"
"Perhaps they only appear under certain conditions," said Sikong Mingyuan. "Otherwise it makes no sense that we’ve never heard of them."
"That’s possible. But it doesn’t explain why the ruin opened now."
They kept arguing, and nobody had an answer.
Then Lin Chen spoke.
"Actually, there’s something else you should know."
Several leaders turned.
Lin Chen looked around at them.
"Before sending us out, the ancient voice told us why these trials were created."
The crowd went quiet.
Even Mo Chen looked at him.
"It said a great Calamity will one day fall on this world. It has existed since ancient times, and the trials were built to prepare cultivators for it."
The mood shifted at once.
A Calamity?
Lin Chen kept going.
"Everyone who passed all five trials was given opportunities to grow stronger, including ancient inheritances. The ancient voice told us to cultivate hard, grow stronger, and be ready to fight when it comes."
Silence.
The elders had been worried about strange trials and the inheritances their younger generations had brought back.
Now they were being told it had all been preparation for something far older.
Huo Tianjie of the Eternal Calamity Sect frowned deeply.
"What Calamity?"
He looked around at the other leaders.
"We’ve never been told of any threat like this. If it’s real, why didn’t our ancestors warn us?"
Several people nodded.
This was too big to dismiss as an ordinary warning.
If the ancient voice had gone to such lengths to keep the inheritances and build the trials, the Calamity could not be small.
But nobody could say what it was.
Then Shi Wuheng spoke, slowly.
"I think I’ve heard of this before."
The leaders turned to him.
His expression was grave.
"When I was a boy, I sometimes heard my family’s elders talk about an ancient disaster. A Calamity that destroyed countless dynasties and brought the world to the edge of ruin."
He paused.
"I didn’t understand what they meant. Whenever I asked, they only said it was an old matter, handed down through the generations."
His eyes moved to the stone gate.
"I always thought it was a legend. After what these youngsters have said, I can’t dismiss it so easily."
The Patriarch of the Jin Family asked at once.
"What kind of Calamity could bring the whole world to the edge of destruction?"
Shi Wuheng looked at him.
"The demons."
Nobody moved.
"The demons?"
"The demons from our ancient records?"
"The ones from the Primordial Era?"
"Yes. Those demons."
The faces around him hardened.
They knew the word.
Several major forces had records of demonic beings that once threatened the mortal world.
But most of those records were incomplete.
Some described terrible battles.
Others mentioned powerful cultivators who fought demonic armies in an age long forgotten.
Almost none explained what had really happened.
Feng Jiutian frowned.
"I thought the great cultivators of the Primordial Era had already dealt with them. If they were such a threat, why are they still a concern now?"
Shi Wuheng shook his head.
"They fought them. They couldn’t wipe them out."
Another stir.
"From what my family’s elders said, the Primordial Era cultivators won a terrible war and stopped the demons from destroying the world. But they couldn’t kill every last one."
He paused.
"In the end, the survivors were sealed away."
He turned toward the enormous stone gate.
"And that seal is connected to this ruin."
For a moment, nobody breathed.
"That’s why it’s called the Primordial Sealing Ruin."
The leaders stood stunned.
They had come to this ruin hoping for opportunities for their younger generations.
Nobody had expected to find that it was tied to the seal on an ancient demonic threat.
Qin Jiuxiao of the Holy Sects narrowed his eyes.
"Are you saying the trials were built because of those demons?"
"That’s what I suspect."
"Then are you saying they are going to return?"
Shi Wuheng was silent for a moment.
"I can’t say for certain. But considering the ancient voice’s warning, I fear the seal may not be as secure as it once was."
The air grew heavier.
If the demons were really coming back, it would reach far beyond any single clan, family or sect.
The whole mortal world could be affected.
Mo Xuehan looked at the others.
"We can’t ignore this. We need to find out whether the seal is weakening, and whether the demons are preparing to come back."
"We should consult the Divination Pavilion," said Xu Kongming of the Void Severing Sect. "Its experts specialize in divining heavenly secrets and glimpsing the future. They may find clues about this Calamity."
Shi Wuheng nodded.
"That was my thought. If the ancient voice has started warning cultivators, we should investigate at once."
He paused.
"The Divination Pavilion may be able to read the heavenly signs and tell us whether the seal is changing. At the least, we should learn what the future may hold."
Nobody knew if the demons would really return.
But the possibility alone was enough.
They couldn’t wait until the threat was at their door.
Xiahou Zhen was the first to answer.
"We should contact the Divination Pavilion as soon as possible. If there’s even a chance the seal is weakening, we have to know."
The others agreed.
Many were already working out how to report this to their own ancestors and forces.
Through all of it, Lin Cangyuan had stayed quiet.
He had been waiting for the ten Lin Clan youngsters, and his first concern had been to see that they were safe.
When they finally appeared among the returning participants, he walked over and looked them over carefully.
"How did it go?"
Lin Chen and the others greeted him respectfully and gave a short account.
The trials.
The inheritances they had received.
Lin Cangyuan listened with satisfaction.
They had come back safe, and they had gained real opportunities.
That alone put his mind at ease.
But when he heard the talk of ancient demons and a coming Calamity, he turned toward the leaders.
He listened quietly while Shi Wuheng spoke.
Demons?
A Calamity from ancient times?
He had never heard of any of this.
Having come from the Immortal World, he knew little of the mortal world’s ancient history.
But he understood that it mattered.
After listening a while longer, he turned back to the youngsters.
"Let’s go back."
They nodded.
He would tell the Ancestor about the Calamity as soon as they returned.
As for the demons, if they were only demons of the mortal world, they could hardly threaten someone of his strength.
For now, the only thing that mattered was reporting it, and letting the Ancestor decide what to do.
Lin Cangyuan took the ten youngsters and left.
Behind them, the other leaders stayed outside the ruin, still arguing about the demons and the seal.
