Chapter 67 Source

In the city of Ashgra, Locke and Gabi Montoya came to a group of dusty houses.

These houses have been uninhabited for a long time.

The residents of Ashgra city did not dare to approach this place. After all, the owners of the houses were all infected with a disease that they could not understand.

Locke looked at the house made of red and white bricks in front of him. The whole house looked like a small villa. He took Gabi Montoya and made a quick inspection of the three houses nearby.

It has to be said that the living standards of mortals in the wizarding world are, on average, better than those of civilians on the Corfu continent.

The civilians on Corfu Island lived in thatched huts without floors, and some even lived in cow sheds with livestock without any beds.

But in the wizarding world, every household of the civilians in the southeast corner has at least one small, simple but independent house.

Gabi Montoya, after checking, shook his head and said to Locke, “Senior Locke, I still don’t see any problem.”

“These houses aren’t connected. We checked three, and each one was separated by five or six separate houses. So why are the civilians living in these three houses all infected with that strange disease, while the owners of the dozen or so houses in the middle are completely fine?”

Locke glanced at the several houses around him. There were still some residents living in these houses. Perhaps they had nowhere else to go, but the doors and windows of every household were nailed shut with wooden boards.

When they saw him and Gabi approaching, they slightly opened the door to observe the situation and became very excited when they saw the wizards coming.

They were obviously living in fear all day long, afraid that they would be infected with that strange disease, but they were helpless because mortal doctors had no way to treat it. When they saw themselves, it was like seeing a savior.

Locke shook his head slightly at Gabi’s question, “Haven’t you noticed? These houses actually have one thing in common.”

Gabi Montoya, who is in her early thirties, was stunned.

Locke pointed to a house in front of them and said, “Didn’t you notice that the residences of these three sick mortals have one thing in common: they are extremely dirty?”

“The walls of the houses were dirty, and the areas in front of the houses didn’t look cleaned at all. The owners of these houses have a very poor sense of hygiene.”

Locke’s eyes swept across the gap between the bottom of the house and the ground, that is, the middle of the moisture-proof mezzanine, where he saw a short-tailed rat running very fast.

The mouse ran out from the mezzanine and hid under the shadow of a tree.

Gabi Montoya was a little confused. “Senior Locke, are you saying that the houses of those sick people are all dirty? But some of the houses are not very clean either.”

Locke said: “That’s because they have cats and dogs.”

Locke quickly moved forward and caught up with the mouse hiding behind the shadow of the tree.

Gabi Montoya looked at Locke, “Senior Locke…wait a moment…”

Locke, however, no longer cared about her and muttered to himself, “There’s something seriously wrong with that rat.”

He keenly noticed the problem. “A typical rat would immediately hide when it saw a humanoid creature larger than itself, but that rat, upon seeing us approach, deliberately came out of hiding.”

Locke caught up with the mouse, stood in front of it, and carefully observed its body.

The world of magic is full of mysteries. Even if you are a second-class wizard apprentice, you must be extremely careful.

Teacher Sophia said that in the complex environment of the magic plant, there are wizard apprentices who have died in the wild due to carelessness.

“Sure enough, this mouse’s consciousness is very slow. When it saw me approaching, its first reaction was not to run away.” Locke took out a bottle from his waist bag. He spent 1 magic stone to buy a bottle of universal simple antidote – [Daffodil Detoxification Water] from the Chimera Market. Then he held his breath and looked down at the mouse.

“Sure enough, just as I guessed, those mortals are not the first creatures to be affected. The first creatures to be affected are these rodents.” Locke found some extremely tiny, almost transparent mycelium on the neck of the mouse.

And it has some hidden carrion on its neck.

Only when Locke got extremely close to it did he smell a faint fragrance. This fragrance was extremely difficult to describe and very special, but in short, it was a fragrance that you would never forget once you smelled it.

This fragrance is between stinky and fragrant, and is extremely special.

Locke felt a certain substance entering his body along with the fragrance. The back of his hand became slightly numb, but because of the medicinal properties of the daffodil detoxifying water and the ancient biological blood in his body, the slight toxicity soon disappeared completely.

Locke said: “Found it. This is the source of the civilians’ illness.”

Gabi Montoya stood behind Locke, looking at the inconspicuous little mouse with a slight sense of astonishment. She had been wandering around here for nearly half a month, always trying to find the evil plant that caused the disease. Who knew that the culprit wasn’t a plant, but a running mouse!

No wonder she searched for more than half a month but couldn’t find it at all.

Because she was looking in the completely wrong direction.

Gabi Montoya looked at Locke with eyes full of respect. This breeder’s assistant, who was much younger than her, was indeed more capable than her.

He had only been there for half a day when he had already locked onto the target.

This made Gabby Montoya feel the gap between her and Locke.

Gabi Montoya said, “Senior Locke, what should we do next? Should we write a report to the college and let others handle it, or should we solve it ourselves?”

Locke considered several types of demonic plants and finally settled on the most suspicious one. ‘These rats are essentially being controlled by that demonic plant.’

“The fungus produced by that demonic plant parasitized them, causing them to lose their fear of humans and slow their reactions.”

‘Their purpose is probably to get humans close to them and create a large-scale plague, which will result in the death of a large number of humans.’

“This is a reproductive mechanism, and the most likely source of this reproductive mechanism is the konjac.”

“The seeds of this magical plant must be grown on a large number of human corpses to reproduce, and it is likely to fail. It is a magical plant with extremely demanding growing conditions, and therefore, it is very rare to see it in the wild.”

“It’s hard to grow without special cultivation.”

Locke thought quickly, “So, if it is really the Rotten Earth Amorphophallus, then there must be a corpse with a high energy density around this magical plant.”

“The konjac is a very rare magical plant, and is very valuable to first-class wizard apprentices. Moreover, the konjac rarely appears in the natural environment. It would be a shame if I didn’t record this abnormality and conduct research.”

Locke looked at Gabi Montoya and said, “We can handle this matter ourselves. There’s no need to make multiple trips to inform the academy.”

“I remember that you are a wizard apprentice specializing in Transfiguration magic. I need you to transform into a cat and search for the gathering place of these mice.”

Gabi Montoya didn’t hesitate and nodded, “Okay, Senior Locke.”
